Hugh Hefner led many souls down the road to destruction
Jonathon van Maren

September 28, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) -- Hugh Hefner, America’s famous porn magnate, has died at the age of 91 at the Playboy Mansion. Throughout his life, he championed unfettered hedonism in every form: Abortion, the legalization of marijuana, the liberation of sex from love, and pornography were all causes he fought — with much success — to bring into the mainstream. Hefner himself was not single-handedly responsible for the massive social changes that rocked the Western world from the Sexual Revolution onwards, but he was easily the single most recognizable symbol of them all.

It began with Dr. Alfred Kinsey, a zoologist with an expertise in gall wasps, who switched to the study of sex and began a campaign to change social norms around sexual behavior. His two major works, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male in 1948 and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female in 1953 stunned everyday Americans as nothing else had. ...

I'll never understand how a guy who epitomized the 50's white misogynist lounge lizard escaped criticism in this hyper sensitized age as Hefner has.

His smoking jacket, jammie pants, ridiculous pipe and irritating self-satisfied smile - not to mention the holier than thou lectures he routinely delivered - struck me as cartoon like.

Unfortunately, if it wasn't him, someone else well might have exploited the situation in similar ways.

The liberals are spinning, twisting, and jiving trying to figure out where to come down on this. He objectified women to the nth degree, but he also promoted 'sexual freedom' and supposedly liberated us from prudishness. They just don't know quite what to do.

@skeeter
They are into anything that lowers traditional American values.   Feminism isn't about female equality, its about destroying the current culture in America.

Hefner was a big part of that destruction and fit into their drinking, drugs and free sex lifestyle

I guess its the same basic impulse that enables leftists to support a theology that treats non believers as subhuman over another who's central principle is love for one another.

And he's answering for that. Right now, and for eternity, he will be answering for that. He may have claimed that there is no God, but he knows differently now.

Hefner’s magazine also regularly published some the best writers of our generation. Norman Mailer, Ray Bradberry, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Kerouac, Gore Vidal, Joseph Heller, Ian Fleming among others. It  also had articles on science, food, art, theater, politics, men’s fashion.

That’s why Hugh Hefner was considered a cultural icon. His was the first magazine of its kind to liberate men from societal expectations.

And his magazine also featured photos of lovely women, smiling, playful, appearing happy and well adjusted. Not at all like the pornographic, drugged out appearance of the women of Penthouse and other pretender magazines.

Imagine poor ole Hef's surprise.... when he arrives in Hell expecting to be treated like royalty....

and instead, is treated like all of the other minions.  Repentance is what was necessary.  But nooooo.....

LOL, I always remembered Chris Rock's routine about how white people had all the good porn mags, while black people had "Players":

First of all the pictures aren’t even in focus, okay, this a bunch of pictures of black girls sittin’ on the toilet, you know. You know Playboy, you know, the girls are all air brushed. You don’t see any marks whatsoever.

You get Players, you know the girls you got stretch marks from the ten kids she had, you see a big bullet wound in her ass.

There was porn before Hef and people who think that dudes were keeping it in their pants just for their wives prior to the first issue of Playboy are naive and ill informed.

I agree.  Hef was no pornographer, certainly not in the same way that Bob Gucchione and Larry Flynt were (are).   He was a civil libertarian,  who fought against repression, sexual and otherwise.   He was a patron of the arts and gave many writers and musicians their start, and remained true to himself in his own eccentric way.

And he was able to spend most of his adult life in a bathrobe.   Not bad.

I don't think liberating men (or women) from societal expectations is necessarily anything to be pleased about.  Those archaic expectations used to include things like commitment to your spouse, honesty and integrity in your business and personal life, and sticking around to parent the children you helped create.  Society is poorer for the degradation of those societal expectations.

I'm not saying that all of that is Hugh Hefner's fault, but I am saying that pornography plays into it.

But I believe some bad things happened to a number of the playmates,  even murder per the murky world some of those connected lived in. Even being as kind as possible, that's got to count out against him too, imho. I mean, they would make the claim they loved women

So you're another one that read Playboy just for the articles :tongue2:

Hefner was pals with a number of Hollywood elitists, sports stars and other major libs.  So yes, liberals will defend him.

To hear Hefner talk you'd think publishing nudie pictures in his mag were as significant to the development of American identity as the writings of de Tocqueville or Mencken. They weren't - they were just nudie pictures. Alas some folks still think he set the standard for cool.

He did more than that.  He contributed in a big way to the overall coarsening and degrading of our culture.  Cool?  If dying alone in a urine stained filthy mansion knowing your best achievement was publishing nude pictures is cool then I guess he was cool.   I pity him for having to meet the God he supposedly did not believe in and who's laws he spent 90 years flaunting.   I fear it was not a merry meeting.  Maybe if Heffners minions thought about where he is now they would change their tune.

As an individual, I don't doubt that he was intelligent, erudite, cultured and gentle.

But that is just one aspect of this whole matter.

No judgments from me.  I'll leave that job up to God.  He knows what He's doing.

Thanks. The individuality and freedom America offers us to follow our muses is an awesome and sometimes under-appreciated thing. If one doesn’t like Playboy, one is free not to purchase it.

Meh.  Hefner was no more a saint or a sinner just like the rest of us.  As I said before, I'll let God judge his soul.
