Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s donors and supporters are beginning to question if the potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate should run in the next election cycle — a bid that would put him against former President Donald Trump — or wait until 2028, according to reports.
According to a report from NBC News, donors and supporters of DeSantis are having second thoughts on the prospect of the governor’s potential presidential bid. Per the report, one main issue seems to be the governor’s ability to take Trump — who has been criticizing the governor for months — head on.
Ron DeSantis may be missing his moment.
A number of the Florida governor’s donors and allies are worried his recent stumbles suggest he may not be ready for a brutal fight against Donald Trump. Some feel DeSantis needs to accelerate his timeline to run for the GOP presidential nomination and begin directly confronting Trump if he’s to have any chance of thwarting the former president’s momentum. Others believe DeSantis should sidestep Trump altogether and wait until 2028 to run.
At a Sunday luncheon following the annual Red Cross ball in Palm Beach, Florida, a group of 16 prominent Republicans, described by one attendee as a mix of DeSantis backers and Trump “skeptics,” discussed misgivings about the governor’s standing for the future if he tussles with the former president.
“They liked him — many of them might even support him,” the person who was at the event said of DeSantis. “But they thought on balance that his long-term future was better without him trying to take Trump head on.”
“He will get scarred up” by Trump, the person added.
Then there’s conservative billionaire shipping goods magnate Richard Uihlein and his wife, Elizabeth, whose $500,000 in combined contributions ranked them among the most generous donors to DeSantis’ 2022 re-election campaign.
I agree with this
Might as well let Trump have the nomination, and then he’ll go on to lose the general
Then we’ll have to pick up the pieces in 2028. Either after Biden’s last term in office or president Newsom’s second term
Personally, I would prefer that he sit out 2024 so that Trump can flame out on his ownsome lonesome without taking down a potentially strong candidate like DeSantis, which is what will almost certainly happen if DeSantis runs in 2024. Trump seems perfectly happy to take the entire GOP down with him if he can't have the nomination.
Don't get sucked into the Orange Shitshow.
Instead, those of us who care about the future of this country should be focusing on the House, the Senate, and state races, including most particularly races for Secretary of State - the office that typically controls the count in elections.
DeSantis, will only become more electable - or prove himself not up to the challenge - by honing his skills and his political capital in the Florida governorship. He will get seriously damaged if he gets too close to the Trump flameout.
2024 could be like 2020 where, even though Trump lost the presidential election, Republicans did make gains that prevented 2020 from being a total blue wave
That’s why, even though we may not get the White House in 2024, I don’t see why we can’t win the Senate and even make gains in the House
No more Trump endorsed candidates, though
If true it could be a problem. No money, no campaign. But, DeSantis really has until the end of July IMO to announce for Prez. Till then he can engage Trump and snipe at the crap show to see if he gains traction as Trump fouls his nest.
I don't see Trump being able to win a general election. Four more years of Sniffy could do us in. We may need DeSantis to run to at least have a chance of stopping that.

The Trumpway Pundit is heard from.
Unverifiable NBC propaganda repeated by a Trump Cult organ is not news.
The Democrats, who are crazy but not stupid, fear DeSantis because he actually has a chance to win the four key states that Donald Trump has no chance at all of winning.
Largely because of California, the Electoral College is stacked heavily against any Republican.
Without electoral college victories in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin - all of them - no Republican can win, absent wins in Nevada and New Hampshire or else, Michigan, and good luck with that. Trump has no realistic chance in any of these states because too many of their likely voters will never vote for him, no matter how many of his acolytes adore him.
Current political reality is ugly for traditional, conservative Americans right now. It will take a new and fresh face to have any chance, at all.
If Trump wins the nomination, I will vote for him. But he won't win the general election, because I am in the minority, and I refuse to kid myself any longer about that.
And if Biden wins, America as we knew and loved her is over. No joke.
DeSantis' donors have spoken. He would be foolish to continue on. A conservative is knocked out even before he announces, yet Trump is surrounding himself with RINO's. Perhaps the left wanted DeSantis gone and made a 'deal' with the unhinged orange one.
Trump IMO is finished. I can't and won't vote for him; not in the primary not in the general. I'll be voting down ballot.
What made Trump successfull in '16 , was he was able to pull this garbage off gradually.... One opponent at a time.
He doubled down way too early this time, and will pay the price.
Votng? Same here. I just can't see myself in good conscious voting for someone who is a spend happy modern day FDR. He calls other RINOS. What irony.... he's he ultimate one.
I agree with this

The way I look at it, Trump deserves to be opposed with the best we've got. The thought of him waltzing to the nomination would say something kind of sick about the GOP.

Assuming the story is true, and Trump does end up being the nominee, we would lose the advantage on the one big issue facing this country, and that’s inflation

From the article above:
"Ron DeSantis may be missing his moment..."
Nope.
2024 IS NOT "his moment".
By sitting this out, Mr. DeSantis strengthens his position to run in 2028.
He should finish out his second term as governor (he's term limited anyway, right?), continuing to push Florida as "deep into the red" as he can. Try to make it "the reddest state" of 'em all.
And then when he leaves office in January 2027, he can immediately shift his energies into running for the presidency in 2028. With eight years of a proven record to back him up.
It's bullcrap.
We're a YEAR away from the starting line.
I am just gonna have to turn the damn thing off if this keeps up.

Well at least the Trump v. DeSantis has come to an end.
'16 primary was case study on a mafia political like hit job. I got to hand to Trump and his team.... Their expertise in destroying a politcal opponent is par to none. My guess is no one including DeSantis wants to go through that. Cruz is a good example. After '16 he'll never be a credible POTUS candidate. Even here in Texas, you'd be surprised how many MAGA(t)s still call Cruz Lyin' Ted. You see the same at TOS, even 7 years later.
(We heard this rumor last week that the big money behind DeSantis for 2024 were abandoning ship.)
@catfish1957
A good example of what, that a closeted homo can't get elected President yet?

Cruz wasn't waving the gay flag and recently praising gays a few weeks ago at the Log Cabin meeting. You can guess who did.

@Sighlass l
Big freaking deal.
Or are you one of those people who think homosexuals don't deserve the same rights as hetrosexuals in America?
How so? Trump says that DeSantis is a OPe RINO wholly owned by globalists, and perhaps a pedophile as well. According to Trump, DeSantis is not even a good governor, and would actually be bad for the country. And if that is what Trump is telling his supporters, those folks aren't going to vote for DeSantis in 2028 anyway. They hate the guy now for those (alleged) reasons, and it would be the same in 2028.
At least if DeSantis runs now, he'll be the consensus "not-Trump" in the race. In 2028, all those Trumpers would be against him anyway and there'd be a bunch of other candidates he'd have to beat. Might as well strike while the iron is hot, and he could always run again in 2028 if he loses. Remember Reagan lost in 1976, but came back in 1980 and won. No reason DeSantis can't run in 2024, and if he loses, again in 2028.

This will put a nail in Ron DeSantis coffin very quickly if he fails to respond quickly and decisively. Expect more and more attacks suggesting the Bushes are behind RDS. This will kill him very quickly. RDS walking back his Ukraine comments led me to believe someone (Karl Rove?) was whispering in his ear that he should position himself as more in support of Ukraine. Big mistake. That war will be extremely unpopular by the time November 2024 rolls around.

Just because the Bushes prefer DeSantis to Trump doesn't make DeSantis a globalist, any more than us backing Stalin over Hitler made us communists.
Trump and DeSantis could have identical views on policy, and many people still would choose to support DeSantis because of the personality and character issues.
DeSantis has to go through, around, over, and under Trump to prove to the base that DeSantis is ready to be the GOP Nominee.
For too long, Dem elites and GOP elites have had an aversion to doing the hard work necessary to cultivate grass roots organizations to produce better candidates and to turn out votes in areas where they are the minority party.
Those of us who don't support Trump are just as much grassroots as are those who do.
I think DeSantis should play the age card at some point as well. I really don't think the American people in general prefer another 80+ year old in the White House.
Man oh man....you guys and your Trump hatred back out in the open.

Personally, I don't think he walked it back, either. But he created the perception that he walked it back, and in politics perception is everything. Why did he find it necessary to say anything more at all? I will tell you why. Because the neocons were put off by his original comments, and so he had to soften them somewhat. Even if RDS is NOT a puppet of the Bushes -- I seriously doubt he is -- if the perception is there, then he is toast. And Trump can do a lot to advance that narrative.
Not really. I think people are just sick of Trump....me being one.
Victor wrote:

Hmmm...
Given that Mr. DeSantis is the ONLY possible challenger to Mr. Trump with a chance of winning the nomination, I'd reckon that the assumption that the Bushes would line up on his side to be a pretty good guess...
RDS will get help from ALL quarters within the GOP that oppose Trump. That is a fairly large group, but not a majority within the party. To get to more than 50 percent, he will have to peel off some Trump support. To do that, he has to distance himself from the likes of the Bushes and be seen as basically Trump without the age and drama. That will be a hard sell if all of his money is coming from globalist neocons.
Lol

LOL! @roamer_1 Certainly, not you!@DCPatriot Not I either. I have always supported Trump when he was right and always pointed out when I thought he was blowing chunks. The problem I have with Trump is that I am really tired of the juvenile antics like name calling and telling flat out lies about other conservatives like he did with Cruz and is now doing with DeSantis. I am so tired of it that I am not sure I can hold my nose and vote for him a third time, but hey that's OK right because Trumps most ardent supporters on the board have said that that's what they will do if DeSantis is the nominee(might be tough since so far he isn't running) and then there are his ideas like Freedom Cities **nononono*

I don't need to read an assessment when I can watch what he does. He has not used his super majority in the statehouse to advance gun rights or their protection.
@Maj. Bill Martin
HOW is noting reported facts "beneath" anyone?
@sneakypete
Because of the nasty insinuation that you're making. You had male roommates, right? In fact, a barracks full of handsome, virle fellow soldiers? Did you guys grease each other up each evening and have a good time? Or do you think it would be disgusting and beneath a decent person to make that insinuation?
Cruz is not a hugely wealthy guy, and his family stays in Texas. He needs to have a place to live in DC when he's not at home, so what else is he supposed to do? Would it be better if he, a married father of two, shared an apartment with a female? Or if he had a solo apartment, he could be more subject to allegations of using it for trysts with other women. Having a male roommate is the safest and most moral course of action when he is living in DC. Not to mention saving him half the cost, which is money that his family could use.
I like him respect you, which is why I thought this insinuation was beneath you.
Pro-DeSantis super PAC hires another former Trump aide
A super PAC aligned with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is adding another former Trump campaign aide to its ranks.
Matt Wolking, who served as deputy communications director for Trump’s last presidential bid, announced on Monday that he would join the super PAC Never Back Down as its strategic communications director.
Wolking headed up former President Trump’s rapid response operation in 2020 before serving as communications director for Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R) successful campaign in 2021. He most recently worked at the GOP consulting firm Axiom Strategies as vice president of communications.
Jeff Roe, the founder and CEO of Axiom Strategies, recently joined Never Back Down as an adviser.
In a pair of tweets on Monday, Wolking said that, while former President Trump was the right person for the job eight years ago, Republicans now need “a disciplined leader who wins instead of loses, never backs down, fights smart, and puts the mission before himself.”
“On each count, Governor Ron DeSantis is the strongest choice,” Wolking tweeted, adding in a second post: “Governor DeSantis is bold, effective, and knows how to finish the job, so with him as president we will finally be able to win so much that we’ll be tired of all the winning.”
“I’m proud to support him and join @NvrBackDown24 as strategic communications director.”
Wolking is the latest former Trump aide to get on board with the effort to recruit DeSantis into the 2024 presidential race. Last week, Erin Perrine, who served as director of press communications for Trump’s 2020 campaign, joined the super PAC as communications director.

Doesn't sound to me like DeSantis' backers are backing down one bit....
Those positions generally are contracted for a minimum period of time. Doesn't make sense to be doing this if backers truly are urging him not to run.

It’s evident to me no amount of facts or appeals to reason will dissuade some people from their hatred for president Trump—yes, that’s the word that fits, hatred. And yes, you are right, DC. I remember when some of these same people were expressing how wrong they were about Trump during his presidency because of his successes in pushing the country to the right.
I commend RiV’s fortitude for taking the slings and arrows for those of use who appreciate Trump but see no hope in the tide turning at TBR.
But, take heart, I still come to read the comments from the few Trump supporters here @sneakypete @DCPatriot @Right_in_Virginia and a few others who wander into the lion’s den.

We don’t need to point out how we don’t hate Donald Trump, or that there were things he did in his presidency that were spot on. We have every right to critique what he did wrong during his presidency along with all this preposterous stuff he’s spewing out now
I am sure there are some very fine people on both sides. :silly:
Lol
If Donald Trump came out today, acknowledge his mistake in the spending department, and said that he will work with Congress to try to reduce the size of government, if elected, and the spending, I’d take a chance and vote for him again.
But he hasn’t. In fact, he is getting much worse.

I think there are a lot of very well-meaning people who were so in love with the idea of what they thought Trump was that they cannot see what he has become.

NOPE. That horse left the barn long ago.
There is no way I will reward him for twenty friggin trillion dollars.
Even if he does say, "gee, I'm sorry..."
Putting my grands or great-grands in debt will not be overlooked.
He needs to step off.
I don't hate Trump, but I'll admit that I have come to despise him.

Well, the thing is, some of us do rely on facts & reason, instead of tweets posted by catturd2, or "terminate the constitution."
If you paid attention to Donald, you wouldn't like him either.
That's a really odd thing to say.
I don't hate Trump. I believe, since 2020, that he has demonstrated he is no longer fit for office.
A stable, prosperous, strong economy requires a stable government with stable leaders.
It's more risky to make long-term investment committments in America when Government policies can change with a Tweet.

I realize the devotion to Trump is absolute to the point of worship, but you might someday break through that fog of adoration and try to discern between reasoned criticism and hatred.
I think there are a lot of very well-meaning people who were so in love with the idea of what they thought Trump was that they cannot see what he has become.
@Maj. Bill Martin
And what are the alternatives, other than just one more career pol looking for "his cut of the pie"?
Okay, I know you're going to disagree with this.pretty strongly, but I don't think most of them are just looking for a cut of the lie. Most of them have some core beliefs that motivated them to run for office in the first place. They generally aren't our beliefs, but they do have them.
And obviously, there are some exceptions to that who basically have become about nothing more than getting their cut of the pie. But most of them still believe in something.
But to answer your question, I can't really answer that question for you. I was just making the general point that sometimes when we form an initial opinion of someone, we stick to that opinion even when there are facts that should lead to the revision of that opinion.
I think Trump is truly exceptional at articulating many of the legitimate grievances of a huge swath of the American people, including myself. That earned him a ton of fans who were extremely hopeful that as the guy who best articulated, in ordinary English, what those problems were, he was the guy best equipped to fix them.
In my opinion, it just hasn't turned out that way. I think he lacks the attention to detail and necessary understanding of the legal and governmental systems to get things done. I also think he has a personality that while extremely entertaining, rubs a lot of people the wrong way. As a result, he just can't fix the problems he is able to identify. But I think a lot of people have put so much hope into a guy who sees things the same way they do that they can't judge his effectiveness objectively.
Alternatives? Well, a guy like DeSantis isn't nearly as entertaining or charismatic as is Trump. He can't captivate a crowd the same way, and he can't articulate those grievances in a way that is as appealing. However, I do believe he has shown himself to be conservative in the way he is governed his state, and has shown himself to be an excellent administrator who understands the ins and outs of the governmental and legal systems. So to me personally, I think he has a better chance than Trump to actually make many of the changes that Trump has been talking about.
That doesn't mean he's the only guy. I'm personally still keeping my here ears open in the primaries to see what the rest of them say.
We don’t need to point out how we don’t hate Donald Trump, or that there were things he did in his presidency that were spot on. We have every right to critique what he did wrong during his presidency along with all this preposterous stuff he’s spewing out nowWhen he can build a 'shining city' that doesn't export its garbage, its sewage, and its rules, maybe he will have something. But people who live in cities live in a different world from those in more rural areas, have no concept of what is necessary to life in the boonies, and would not recognize some of the tools that are part of everyday life here.
This future city nonsense and paying people to have babies is ridiculous. It doesn’t matter who it comes from. This is “squad” type bullshit.
Everybody pointed example after example where Trump’s city idea has resulted in failure, and his supporters still choose to remain blind. You’re never gonna convince them no matter how many examples you show them that this has failed.
You would think that the city idea would at least give them some pause.
Even the whole notion (as in electric cars) that they are 'emission free'
@Smokin JoeNothing is. Not even rocks (they just take a little longer, but there's lots of them).
Even people aren't "emission free".
Maj. Bill Martin...
The way I look at it, Trump deserves to be opposed with the best we've got. The thought of him waltzing to the nomination would say something kind of sick about the GOP.
@Smokin Joe
Even people aren't "emission free".
Anybody who ever spent time in a GP tent, or God forbid a shelter half, knows that.
