Title: Android: Google Messages - Messages for the Web... Texting from PC
Post by: roamer_1 on November 14, 2018, 04:04:14 am
I have been searching for quite a while for a way to get cellphone txting on my desktop. I spend so much time at my desk that trying to fuss with txts on a stoopid phone gets me irate.

ANYHOO, I don't know when the option was added, but I lately discovered a pretty cool thing.

You need a droid, with Android Message replaced by Google Messages

On your PC:
Open any common browser (works for sure with FF and Chrome) to this page:
https://messages.android.com/
You may want 'Remember this Computer' turned on.

On your phone, Open Google Messages, and in the top right, find the triple dot menu and select 'Messages for Web' in the pulldown.

Once the dialog presents, push the button, and point the phone at the QR code square visible on your PC, and the rest just happens. Poof! Instant txting from your PC!

Seems to work really well, better than anything else I have tried... but it tends to hawg my batt some. Not a problem, as a power cord is always available.

LOL! I have had Google Messages and Google Keyboard on my phone nearly from the beginning! Funny that the answer was there all the way along.

Hope this helps somebody else.

Great going. Now Google is going to know about all your drug deals and hooker transactions.

Nah, Frank. I have a burner for such things.

Yeah... But he didn't know how to shut off location.

Burners and rum don't mix well.

Used it for years now.

I was on Yahoo Messenger (YIM) for years and years, till one day, they suddenly quit being able to text to phones. Switched to AIM for a couple more years... Then same thing. On Slack now for IM, only with family... Literally all my IM buddies are gone now. Every now and then, when in my Yahoo Mail, it will notify me of a YIM message, but for all intensive porpoises, Internet IM is dead to me.

Thanks for the link (been there before), but it is now unnecessary.
I only wish there was a stand alone app.

Yep. Mightytext is alright (though you have to pay if you txt too much), as is yappy (which I like even better)

But this is free, easy, and takes no extra apps (for me anyhoo)

That looks interesting.

I refuse to use Google anything.  Well....except for Google Maps.  There is no substitute and I don't have location turned on, so hopefully they don't get any usable info from me.

It don't matter. If your phone is a droid, they got every little thing you do on it anyway.
And Apple or Microsoft ain't no better.

I have a Samsung and use the Samsung apps.  Not sure if it helps, but maybe it does.

NOPE.
Google owns the Android OS. And it does phone home.
And I know of no way to stop that.

Which is why I don't limit myself on the phone. They see it anyway.
Now, give me a laptop and it's a different story. That can be anonymous.

We have Verizon phones, Verizon has a web page for messaging, and also a Win10 freestanding App.  I use them all the time. Not all features work properly.  I typed a lengthy multi-paragraph Text to somebody, and it stripped all my paragraph breaks.

No Verizon for me, but thanks for the input!

I didn't know that!  I'll have to look for the app.

There is a separate app for the phone, too.

Cyber, do you have a link?  I'm not finding it on the web site.

I fund the "Verizon Messages" app for the phone in "Play Store," and it's in the Microsoft Store for the Win10 PC.  In verizon.com there is a link to the web-based app. but you have to look for it.

Here's the sign-on link.  https://login.verizonwireless.com/amserver/cdcservlet?realm=vzw&goto=https%3A%2F%2Fweb.vma.vzw.com%3A443%2Fvma%2Fredirect%3Fgoto%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fweb.vma.vzw.com%253A443%252Fvma%252Fweb2%252FMessage.do&refererservlet=https%3A%2F%2Fweb.vma.vzw.com%3A443%2Fvma%2Fredirect%3Fgoto%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fweb.vma.vzw.com%253A443%252Fvma%252Fweb2%252FMessage.do&MajorVersion=1&MinorVersion=0&RequestID=s20694389e812db5512f98fd2dffaa2a8babb38f0&ProviderID=https%3A%2F%2Fweb.vma.vzw.com%3A443%2F%3FRealm%3D%252F&IssueInstant=2018-11-15T17%3A52%3A36Z&ForceAuthn=false&IsPassive=false&Federate=false

From my archives:

Sending a text message to a mobile phone from your computer is much easier and faster than doing it from the limited keypad and tiny screen of a mobile phone [source: Pogue].
In this article, we'll show you how to e-mail text messages directly to a mobile phone.

   1.   Open your e-mail program and start a new e-mail message.
   2.   Enter the cell phone number in the To: box using the format number@teleflip.com, where "number" is the phone number of the cell phone to which you're sending the message. For example, to send a text message to cell phone 123-456-7890, enter 1234567890@teleflip.com.
   3.   Type a message of up to 160 characters in the message box and then click Send. Your message will shortly appear on the cell phone. You may want to test it on your own cell phone to make sure it works [source: Pogue].
Note: Many cell phone carriers allocate e-mail addresses to their customers' phone numbers to enable them receive e-mail text messages. If you know the carrier of the cell phone you want to send text messages to, you can use it instead of the teleflip.com domain name.

Here are the domain names of some of the more popular carriers:
   â€¢   Alltel: @message.alltel.com
   â€¢   Nextel: @messaging.nextel.com
   â€¢   Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
   â€¢   SunCom: @tms.suncom.com
   â€¢   T-mobile: @tmomail.net
   â€¢   VoiceStream: @voicestream.net
â€¢   Verizon: @vtext.com (text only) or @vzwpix.com (photos and video) [source: Slipstick Systems].
