Pete Buttigieg’s little bicycle theater is ridiculous

Little Petey Buttigieg is now playing in the big leagues, having made the tremendous leap from ineffectual mayor of a crime-ridden city to Transportation Secretary of the United States of America. To make a point about alternative transportation, he rode a bicycle to his first White House cabinet meeting – after first having several burly men drive him near the White House and then escort him and his bike. This kind of theater is typical for leftists, who often seem incapable of distinguishing fantasy from reality.
Last week, Little Petey (who always reminds me of a cross between Alfred “What, Me Worry?†Newman and Beaver Cleaver) let Americans know that being transportation secretary is more than focusing on roads and cars. Therefore, he tweeted out, “You should not have to own a car to prosper in this country, no matter what kind of community you’re living in.â€
On Thursday, he decided to use his first White House cabinet meeting to make that point. He wasn’t going to drive to the White House. He was going to bike there. Except that was ridiculous because D.C. is a big, busy city and biking is a slow and vulnerable process.
What Little Petey actually did was to take a large SUV to some point near the White House. He then strapped on his cute helmet, had his three burly companions get his bike out of the car, and engaged in the theater of riding a bike to the White House, with a security guard biking at his side and the same SUV traveling behind him to keep him safe from errant vehicles:

Use an armored Suburban to bring a bike within a short distance of the destination. Unload it and ride in with a security detail in tow, pretending to save energy.

My car commute, by a fairly direct route, is ~10.5 miles. By Silicon Valley employees' standards, that's short. With moderate traffic it takes 15-20 minutes; with normal Pre-Covid traffic it took 25-35 minutes. A route on which bicycles would be allowed (= no freeways) would be at least 12-15 miles, and would take 60-90 minutes (every stoplight increases time uncertainty). Buses would take similar times, depending on how many times a different bus would be needed. Even a single "express" bus line requires getting from one's home to the bus stop and getting from the bus stop to one's place of work, easily doubling commute time (BTDTGTTS).
LimoLib Pete has little understanding of normal working people's lives and cares even less. Increasing mass transit at the expense of car use will, again (remember the '70s?), be an expensive, misery-increasing, boondoggle.

If he is to be believed, we should spend nothing as we will not need them as dirt paths are sufficient for bikes.

After all, if you burn motor fuel, you're already paying for infrastructure through fuel taxes.
