N.J. cop trying to aid stranded driver struck, killed on turnpike

A Jersey City cop was killed on the New Jersey Turnpike Friday morning when he left his car to help a stranded motorist — only to be struck by a passing vehicle.
Lt. Christopher Robateau, 49, was on his way to work when he spotted the beleaguered driver on the side of the highway near Exit 14 in Newark about 6:30 a.m., city officials said.
But the officer’s act of goodwill ended in tragedy.
