Had the exact same thought. Without spelling out 'Austin' nobody would have any clue what that logo is supposed to mean.
Nobody looks at that and says, "Oh, I see. That is an 'A'." Not only does it not look like 'A', how does A equal Austin?


To me, without spelling 'Austin', it looks like something having to do with the beach, or the ocean.

The state flag of Texas looks like this:

Red, white, blue and a star - all elements are obvious tributes to the United States flag.
 
But "Austin" uses green (an environmental tribute, one supposes) and purple (the preferred hair color of leftist lunatics everywhere) and a logo that looks like it belongs to a Colorado ski resort.
