EMERGING TECHNOLOGY HORIZONS: Defense Budget Request Shortchanges Emerging Tech
4/24/2024
By Jacob Winn

The Defense Department released its share of the fiscal year 2025 president’s budget request March 11. But what does it mean for emerging technologies?

Overall, the department’s request for science and technology is $17.2 billion, which is about 3.5 percent lower than the $17.82 billion request for fiscal year 2024. However, the 2025 request is still substantially higher than the $16.45 billion request for 2023.

If the 2025 budget is appropriated as requested, the S&T enterprise will effectively take its foot off the accelerator in maintaining the Defense Department’s current growth in long-term scientific and technology investment.

While the broader research, development, test and evaluation account continues to grow — focusing on near-term prototyping, system development and demonstration and system integration of new capabilities — cuts to the science-and-technology portfolio weaken the research-and-development ecosystem at a time when long-term investments will pay dividends for capabilities in the 2030s and beyond.

Around here the decision wouldn't have ultimately been up to her. If she hadn't done it, animal control would have. Two weeks ago two dogs killed  my grand daughters two pet ducks. Animal control took the dogs and those dogs have been put down.

Special Ops Vehicle Numbers Go Down as Command Divests

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — Special Operations Forces are transitioning from their post-9/11 counterterrorism focus to support the principal effort under the National Defense Strategy: “integrated deterrence.”

And that has made an impact on the command’s fleet of ground mobility vehicles, Vincent Grizio, program manager for the family of special operations vehicles at Special Operations Command, said at a recent industry trade show.

There are currently about 3,200 ground vehicles in Special Operations Command’s fleet, which is down from some 3,400 the previous year. That will probably be fewer than 3,000 by early 2025, he said at the National Defense Industrial Association’s Tactical Wheeled Vehicles conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

As the command makes the transition from the global war on terror years to today’s great power competition, the number reflects “an expectation that the capacity that we have is not right but that we’re going to have to get the capacity right in the future,” he said.

In my retirement, as part of the process, take interior photos of peoples' homes for mortgage service companies and banks when they want to eliminate their Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) premium payments.

Only two reasons I am ever late for an appointments. Traffic...and dogs!   happy77

In a massive feeling of schadenfreude around the game this year from others.   The fact the  'stros are 7-19, with no improvement on the horizon?

To finish .500 Houston will have to play .545  Baseball tihe rest of the season.

The needle on my give a shit meter on the game has pegged to the bottom. Wake me in '25.

Yeah ... I was a Barves [sic] fan in the 2015 -2017 years, too.  Rough, no doubt.  At some point, you have to just go with the flow and take enjoyment out of a good play here or there.

LIEden's anti-Semites would, briefly, welcome Israel retreating and surrendering to Hamas. Briefly, because Israel would continue to exist.
