How many of Ellis island immigrants had a HS degree. Not much.  In the last decade the education level of Hispanics crossing the border has increased. 53% age 25-64 of Hispanics from south of border crossing into the US have a HS degree entering the US.

This "we assimilated unskilled immigrants before and so can do it again" argument is intellectual laziness at its worst.

The economy of 2024 isn't anything like the economy during the mass immigration eras of the late 19th and early 20th century.  Back then, our economy required large numbers of unskilled/low-skilled laborers because we were still heavily dependent on human muscle power.  The Hoover Dam was dig largely by hand.   Now, the economy is much more heavily automated, and we hear a ton about the lack of lower end jobs for people without educations.

I always find it amusing that the same crowd that claims we need masses of illegal immigrants to take jobs that would otherwise go unfilled also supports things like the universal basic income because there aren't supposedly enough jobs to go around.   So we're just importing more people to whom we are going to have to pay that UBI.

But if you really think we need more immigrants, here's an idea: first secure the border, and stop the flood of unvetted, minimally qualified illegal aliens. Then, bring in the necessary number of legal immigrants via a merit-based based.  Isn't a merit-based system - English proficiency, education achievement, etc., preferable.  Hell, bring in as many of those high-achieving Nigerians as we can get!

I'd have zero problem with that.

Democrats hold early leads in battleground Senate races: Poll

.

Senate Democratic candidates in several key swing states are beating their Republican opponents in the latest round of polling released on Monday.

Democrats are ahead in Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin but tied with the GOP in Nevada, according to a New York Times-Siena College survey.

The results underscore the challenges that lie ahead for Republicans as Democrats fight to maintain their one-seat Senate majority. The Democratic Senate candidates are far outperforming their party’s leader in the same states, where President Joe Biden trails former President Donald Trump in all four.

Wisconsin boasts the biggest lead of 7 percentage points for Democrats, with Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) at 49% to Republican Eric Hovde’s 42%. The margin of error for the state’s results was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

In Arizona, Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) leads Republican Kari Lake by 3 points, 46% to 43%. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Then, in Pennsylvania, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) is ahead by 2 points over Republican David McCormick, 46% to 44%, within the margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

In Nevada, however, Sen. Jackey Rosen (D-NV) and Republican Sam Brown are tied at 41%. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

Democrats also face competitive Senate races with four other seats they hold, including Michigan, Montana, Ohio, and Maryland. Those states were not included in the poll.

Report: Biden Campaign Floats Virtual Convention to Avoid Pro-Palestinian Protests

Nick Gilbertson 13 May 2024

President Joe Biden’s campaign advisers seem to be afraid of the Democrat party’s voters, as some are reportedly pushing for aspects of a virtual convention to avoid protests over the administration’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Politico Politics Bureau Chief Jonathan Martin reported Friday that some of Biden’s closest advisers are looking to synthesize portions of a traditional convention with 2020’s iteration – which was conducted virtually during the coronavirus pandemic – all to avert potential or even likely protests:

President Joe Biden’s top advisers are all too aware the ghosts of 1968 may haunt their convention here, but they’re grappling with a pair of more urgent and thoroughly modern-day challenges as summer nears: How far can they go in reprising their virtual 2020 convention to mitigate the threat of disruption inside the arena, and how will they navigate a rookie mayor who unabashedly sympathizes with protesters?

Trumpeting the success of their Covid-era convention four years ago, some in Biden’s orbit are aggressively pushing to make the 2024 conclave a hybrid production. That would mean in-person speeches from the president, party luminaries and rising stars to draw television attention alongside a mix of pre-recorded testimonials and videos from other parts of the country.

The goal: drive maximum viewership on television and the internet while minimizing live programming and openings for protest in Chicago’s United Center. This would mean moving party business, such as rules and platform votes, off the floor and denying would-be demonstrators a chance to seize on contentious debates.

Martin’s report comes as protesters have made their way into key events for the Biden campaign, including his glitzy $20 million fundraiser in March with former Democrat Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as Breitbart News reported.

Our entire food supply vegetables, dairy 🧈 industry and meat production is done by illegals on huge corporate farms.Native Americans will never work in those slaughterhouses field work picking crops in any measurable way to make a difference.

The hospitality industry, maids, dishwashers, are all illegals  or peoole on work permits.

Trump will build a wall and keep our the criminal but will vet millions in. Our economy would collapse w/o illegals because our native birth rate  is heading to negative numbers
Illegals  who obtain work permits also get a fed govt id number and they do pay into SS

In my area Hispanics do most of the tree trimming and lawn care and I live in a whitebread area.  Young white males will just not do this work or they are all on drugs, no drivers license and lazy with poor attitudes. Not all but enough.. It's pitiful

First, there are specific migrant agricultural workers programs that are not dependent on illegals.  I know because I've had AMWPA cases.

Second, the reason those non-agricultural jobs aren't worked by Americans is because illegal labor has kept the wages artificially low.   Reduce the number of illegals, and the wages will increase.

Why is it that you lefties want to depress wages for American workers by letting in cheap illegal labor?
