Prime Minister Mark Carney clinched a majority government Monday after three byelection wins in central Canada, a significant result that will give the governing party full control of the House of Commons and possibly three more years in power.

The Liberal candidates in two Toronto ridings trounced their opponents with landslide victories, improving on the party's already strong showing in both seats at the last general election.

The party also won a closely fought contest in Terrebonne, a Montreal-area riding that Liberal candidate Tatiana Auguste won by a single vote last time — a result the Supreme Court ultimately annulled due to voting card errors.

In this do-over, Auguste captured 48.4 per cent of the votes cast in a seat that has historically been a Bloc Québécois stronghold. The separatist candidate was a close second with about 47 per cent.

The three byelection victories, combined with five recent floor crossings, have given the Liberals something that narrowly eluded them in last year's general election: more than half the seats in the Commons and a freer hand to pursue their parliamentary agenda.
