No more ‘edecanes:’ eye-candy models no longer allowed at Mexico City events
'This job should not exist,' says mayor
Friday, August 17, 2018

Attractive, sometimes scantily clad female models who are often employed at events to greet guests or simply to act as eye candy will no longer be allowed at government events in Mexico City.

The capital’s mayor, José Ramón Amieva, last week banned the employment of the attendants known in Mexico as edecanes at events sponsored by the local government, stating that “this job should not exist” because “it goes against policies of gender equality.”

While edecanes usually dress more conservatively at government and corporate events than when promoting products at trade fairs or sporting events, there have been some notable exceptions that have raised eyebrows and attracted criticism.

At the first presidential debate in the lead-up to the 2012 election, electoral authorities hired a Playboy model to hand out envelopes to the four candidates.

Julia Orayen appeared onstage in a tight, white dress with a cut-out front that revealed ample cleavage. Six years later, many have long forgotten the candidates’ pitches to voters but can clearly recall the edecan’s controversial appearance.

Politics and sexual allure mixed again in 2016 when the New Alliance Party held a campaign event in Mexico City featuring four semi-nude young women wearing nothing above the waist but body paint in the party’s trademark turquoise and white colors.

...According to El Financierio, the lucrative job positions, which are essentially that of hostesses, have not only previously played a leading role across the city’s events but can also bring in large earnings for the selected women known as Las Edecanes. The report suggests that women can earn anything between 5,000 pesos ($260)  to 30,000 pesos ($1,560) a month. When you compare this to the average wage for a Mexican household which comes in at around $843 per month, then it could reveal a pointer as to why a number of women could choose to pursue this employment.  Despite the new ban in Mexico City, a quick online search reveals an abundance of Edecane job advertisements for corporate events and even for construction companies and digital agencies.

Although the job position is typically associated with girls in high heels, it has been argued that Edecanes can also hold more conservative looking appearances for, particularly corporate events. On the contrary, previous stories consist of Playboy models being hired to entertain during election announcements and it was back in 2014 when politicians hinted at the idea that hostessing is sometimes a cover for prostitution.

The ban has also been met with criticism from the hostess circles who have suggested the restrictions have negative implications on Edecanes further across the country. In a country where it is estimated over a million women work as Edecanes, it has been suggested that the restriction instils an image of the women as being involved with illicit activity, when in fact the role is strictly work, and well paid work at that....

It's what makes their game shows fun to watch, even if you don't understand Mexican Spanish.

My suspicion is these ladies are simply the mistresses of government officials and keep their lucrative jobs at their whim and pleasure -- on the taxpayer's dime.

Sorry to be a spoilsport, but they should pay for their own hookers.

Yeah, because there are so many employment opportunities in that shithole town that they can ban certain types of jobs.

There was a big series of Irish and Jewish immigration waves to Mexico over several centuries.  Lots of redheads.
