Red meat contains numerous vitamins and minerals that are essential for a healthful, balanced diet. In recent years, however, its reputation has been severely blemished, with studies suggesting that red meat intake can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. But is it really that bad for us? We investigate.
[A variety of red meats]
Intake of red meat in the U.S. has fallen dramatically over the past 4 decades.

Red meat is defined as any meat that comes from mammalian muscle. This includes beef, lamb, pork, goat, veal, and mutton.

For many households, red meat is considered a food staple, with some of us consuming beef, lamb, and pork in different variations on a daily basis.

Last year, the average person in the United States is estimated to have consumed around 106.6 pounds of red meat. Although this might appear a high intake, it is a significant reduction from the average 145.8 pounds consumed per capita in 1970.

RED MEAT GOOD! I am so tired of the roller coaster of it's good, it's bad it's good it's bad, that health professionals play with us. If the consumption of red meat has dropped it's because the price has risen so much that people are forced to eat more chicken, God I'm tired of chicken, give a steak, a brisket, Tri Tip.......red meat yum! Barbecued, roasted smoked, stewed, it's all good. Damn now I'm hungry.

How much do you eat and how's it raised and processed?

Can't answer the question without knowing that.

I decided to go the alternative route when I was diagnosed with cancer, except I did have the tumor removed. I was raw vegan for the first three months and vegan for another six. I'm now pescatarian; a vegetarian who eats fish. Although I was a steak and potato gal before, I now greatly prefer a nice rare tuna steak instead. Hubby and I both weight train heavily, he toward the natural body building end, and we noticed an increase in performance when we gave up meat. It's not for everybody but it works for us, and yes our kids are too

Everything is bad for you, for the most part.
And then you die.

When I was diagnosed with gout, I was given a list of foods to avoid.  Not only  was red meat on that list,  but some poultry and seafood as well.  Even a few vegetables were on the list.   Good Grief!  If I cut out everything on that list, I would have nothing to eat.   I finally decided that, while I couldn't cut out every food on the list, I could reduce my overall consumption.

So far, my plan has worked and flare-ups of gout are few and far between.  But if I get an appetite for a good steak, I'm going to indulge.  The heck with these naysayers.

Since I've had stomach surgery, the only non liquid protein that will stay down is fish and egg whites.

I've become a pescaterian by default. I miss cows.
