Post by: truth_seeker on March 03, 2019, 12:23:04 am
Do you agree with Lady Gaga's description of social media, as toilet of the internet?

Depends. Is TBR and other political forums "social media?"

Good question.  Are we?

Yes of course.

Why do you think it may not be?

Social media are the omnia gatherum of the Internet, and most of what goes in there deserves to be flushed.

I'd like to know if the creator of this poll thinks so when we're called a "toilet."  I noticed there isn't a "No" response.

More poignant question - does Lady Gaga have the credibility to judge whether anything is a toilet or not?

Based on the sleaze factor of most of her videos?  I'd say not.

A toilet is one of the most important inventions in history. It has saved billions of lives by improving hygiene.

By definition, forums are social media as well. (which is why I laugh when I see people claim there is no competition.)

1. I doubt Gaga had TBR in mind when SHE remarked.

2. I did NOT have TBR in mind when I posted the poll.

3. TBR is what the owner (perhaps Mods too) wants it to be. Ask them if it is/is not social media.

4. Upon further reflection Gaga's accidentally inciteful remark made me think of Internet behavior in general.

Those big platforms are under pressure to reform themselves, to avoid government intervention.

Thanks!  I appreciate the clarification!

Does anybody disagree that Youtube, Facebook and Twitter play a huge role in politics these days? It's an interesting question, whether or not these platforms should be limited in their ability to pull for one side over the other.

This is as much or more political media, a discussion forum, mostly politics.

I think of Facebook, Snapchat, and such as "social media", and most of what is out there is what Vonnegut described as granfaloonery, But there is enough malicious crap and gossip to render it eminently flushable, for the most part. YMMV.

I consider Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube and others to play bigger roles in politics.

Those owners know they can influence opinions, and candidates want that influence.

They play an even bigger role by censoring out opposing (non-Leftist approved) viewpoints
