A worker at the Cathedral of St. Paul found a newborn baby boy abandoned inside the building Wednesday night, police said Thursday.

Paramedics determined the child was uninjured, said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman.

The boy was discovered in a laundry basket, wrapped in blankets, in an entryway of the Cathedral — inside the side door to Dayton Avenue, according to police and officials with the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. An employee conducting regular rounds of the building found the baby.

It was unknown how long the infant had been there. Police were called about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
