All right you sbroda. This means u.
Hey Freya. I need some cat advice. Our Sheena cat now insists she sleeps on my spot. Any any way to lure her back into to the old arrangement?

Ok. Here's one, just posted today on Cheezeburger. It's just a video link. The upshot is there's a lady in hospice who's dying and her last wish is to snuggle some kittens.
The kittens are adorable and the lady seems so happy snuggling with them. This would probably be my last wish too.

Some good names in there. But "Hudson"? Who names their dog Hudson?It didn't sound very Southern to me, but maybe they meant the old car co. not the river.
Why we Shoot Deer in the Wild
Why we shoot deer in the wild. (A letter from someone who wants to remain anonymous, who farms, writes well and actually tried this)
I had this idea that I could rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it. The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.
I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope. The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were not having any of it. After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up--3 of them. I picked out a likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw my rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me. I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a good hold..
The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation. I took a step towards it, it took a step away. I put a little tension on the rope .., and then received an education.. The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you start pulling on that rope.
That deer exploded. The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a lot stronger than a cow or a colt. A cow or a colt in that weight range I could fight down with a rope and with some dignity. A deer-- no Chance. That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined.. The only upside is that they do not have as much stamina as many other animals.
A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.
I figured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it would likely die slow and painfully somewhere. At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was mutual.
Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of responsibility for the situation we were in. I didn't want the deer to have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like a squeeze chute. I got it to back in there and I started moving up so I could get my rope back.
Did you know that deer bite?
They do! I never in a million years would have thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when ..... I reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist. Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they just bite you and slide off to then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head--almost like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.
The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was ineffective.
It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it was likely only several seconds. I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by now), tricked it. While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up with my left hand and pulled that rope loose.
That was when I got my final lesson in deer behavior for the day.
Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves are surprisingly sharp... I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -like a horse --strikes at you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal. This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.
This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy. I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run. The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run from a horse that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the back of the head. Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run, it hit me right in the back of the head and knocked me down.
Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed.. What they do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying there crying like a little girl and covering your head.
I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away. So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope......to sort of even the odds!!
All these events are true... An Educated Farmer

Neighborhood Hazard (Or: Why the Cops Won't Patrol Brice Street)
I never dreamed slowly cruising through a residential neighborhood could be so incredibly dangerous!
Studies have shown that motorcycling requires more decisions per second, and more sheer data processing than nearly any other common activity or sport. The reactions and accurate decision making abilities needed have been likened to the reactions of fighter pilots! The consequences of bad decisions or poor situational awareness are pretty much the same for both groups too.
Occasionally, as a rider I have caught myself starting to make bad or late decisions while riding. In flight training, my instructors called this being “behind the power curve”. It is a mark of experience that when this begins to happen, the rider recognizes the situation, and more importantly, does something about it. A short break, a meal, or even a gas stop can set things right again as it gives the brain a chance to catch up.
Good, accurate, and timely decisions are essential when riding a motorcycle…at least if you want to remain among the living. In short, the brain needs to keep up with the machine.
I had been banging around the roads of east Texas and as I headed back into Dallas, found myself in very heavy, high-speed traffic on the freeways. Normally, this is not a problem, I commute in these conditions daily, but suddenly I was nearly run down by a cage that decided it needed my lane more than I did. This is not normally a big deal either, as it happens around here often, but usually I can accurately predict which drivers are not paying attention and avoid them before we are even close. This one I missed seeing until it was nearly too late, and as I took evasive action I nearly broadsided another car that I was not even aware was there!
Two bad decisions and insufficient situational awareness…all within seconds. I was behind the power curve. Time to get off the freeway.
I hit the next exit, and as I was in an area I knew pretty well, headed through a few big residential neighborhoods as a new route home. As I turned onto the nearly empty streets I opened the visor on my full-face helmet to help get some air. I figured some slow riding through the quiet surface streets would give me time to relax, think, and regain that “edge” so frequently required when riding.
Little did I suspect…
As I passed an oncoming car, a brown furry missile shot out from under it and tumbled to a stop immediately in front of me. It was a squirrel, and must have been trying to run across the road when it encountered the car. I really was not going very fast, but there was no time to brake or avoid it—it was that close.
I hate to run over animals…and I really hate it on a motorcycle, but a squirrel should pose no danger to me. I barely had time to brace for the impact.
Animal lovers, never fear. Squirrels can take care of themselves!
Inches before impact, the squirrel flipped to his feet. He was standing on his hind legs and facing the oncoming Valkyrie with steadfast resolve in his little beady eyes. His mouth opened, and at the last possible second, he screamed and leapt! I am pretty sure the scream was squirrel for, “Banzai!” or maybe, “Die you gravy-sucking, heathen scum!” as the leap was spectacular and he flew over the windshield and impacted me squarely in the chest.
Instantly he set upon me. If I did not know better I would have sworn he brought twenty of his little buddies along for the attack. Snarling, hissing, and tearing at my clothes, he was a frenzy of activity. As I was dressed only in a light t-shirt, summer riding gloves, and jeans this was a bit of a cause for concern. This furry little tornado was doing some damage!
Picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and leather gloves puttering maybe 25mph down a quiet residential street…and in the fight of his life with a squirrel. And losing.
I grabbed for him with my left hand and managed to snag his tail. With all my strength I flung the evil rodent off the left of the bike, almost running into the right curb as I recoiled from the throw.
That should have done it. The matter should have ended right there. It really should have. The squirrel could have sailed into one of the pristinely kept yards and gone on about his business, and I could have headed home. No one would have been the wiser.
But this was no ordinary squirrel. This was not even an ordinary pissed-off squirrel.
This was an evil attack squirrel of death!
Somehow he caught my gloved finger with one of his little hands, and with the force of the throw swung around and with a resounding thump and an amazing impact he landed square on my back and resumed his rather anti-social and extremely distracting activities. He also managed to take my left glove with him!
The situation was not improved. Not improved at all. His attacks were continuing, and now I could not reach him.
I was startled to say the least. The combination of the force of the throw, only having one hand (the throttle hand) on the handlebars, and my jerking back unfortunately put a healthy twist through my right hand and into the throttle. A healthy twist on the throttle of a Valkyrie can only have one result. Torque. This is what the Valkyrie is made for, and she is very, very good at it.
The engine roared as the front wheel left the pavement. The squirrel screamed in anger. The Valkyrie screamed in ecstasy. I screamed in…well…I just plain screamed.
Now picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a slightly squirrel torn t-shirt, and only one leather glove roaring at maybe 70mph and rapidly accelerating down a quiet residential street…on one wheel and with a demonic squirrel on his back. The man and the squirrel are both screaming bloody murder.
With the sudden acceleration I was forced to put my other hand back on the handlebars and try to get control of the bike. This was leaving the mutant squirrel to his own devices, but I really did not want to crash into somebody’s tree, house, or parked car. Also, I had not yet figured out how to release the throttle…my brain was just simply overloaded. I did manage to mash the back brake, but it had little affect against the massive power of the big cruiser.
About this time the squirrel decided that I was not paying sufficient attention to this very serious battle (maybe he is a Scottish attack squirrel of death), and he came around my neck and got IN my full-face helmet with me. As the faceplate closed partway and he began hissing in my face I am quite sure my screaming changed tone and intensity. It seemed to have little affect on the squirrel however.
The rpm’s on The Dragon maxed out (I was not concerned about shifting at the moment) and her front end started to drop.
Now picture the large man on the huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a very ragged torn t-shirt, and wearing one leather glove, roaring at probably 80mph, still on one wheel, with a large puffy squirrel’s tail sticking out his mostly closed full-face helmet. By now the screams are probably getting a little hoarse.
Finally I got the upper hand…I managed to grab his tail again, pulled him out of my helmet, and slung him to the left as hard as I could. This time it worked…sort-of. Spectacularly sort-of, so to speak.
Picture the scene. You are a cop. You and your partner have pulled off on a quiet residential street and parked with your windows down to do some paperwork.
Suddenly a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a torn t-shirt flapping in the breeze, and wearing one leather glove, moving at probably 80mph on one wheel, and screaming bloody murder roars by and with all his strength throws a live squirrel grenade directly into your police car.
I heard screams. They weren't mine...
I managed to get the big motorcycle under directional control and dropped the front wheel to the ground. I then used maximum braking and skidded to a stop in a cloud of tire smoke at the stop sign at a busy cross street.
I would have returned to fess up (and to get my glove back). I really would have. Really. But for two things. First, the cops did not seem interested or the slightest bit concerned about me at the moment. One of them was on his back in the front yard of the house they had been parked in front of and was rapidly crabbing backwards away from the patrol car. The other was standing in the street and was training a riot shotgun on the police cruiser.
So the cops were not interested in me. They often insist to “let the professionals handle it” anyway. That was one thing. The other? Well, I swear I could see the squirrel, standing in the back window of the patrol car among shredded and flying pieces of foam and upholstery, and shaking his little fist at me. I think he was shooting me the finger…
That is one dangerous squirrel. And now he has a patrol car…
I took a deep breath, turned on my turn-signal, made an easy right turn, and sedately left the neighborhood.
As for my easy and slow drive home? Screw it. Faced with a choice of 80mph cars and inattentive drivers, or the evil, demonic, attack squirrel of death...I’ll take my chances with the freeway. Every time.
And I’ll buy myself a new pair of gloves.
CUAgain,
Daniel Meyer

If I was to get a dog, I would want a golden or a lab or a Winston dog. But I'll end up at the pound and get a pound puppy.
Hey @Freya, you know we got Winston from some people who didn't want him anymore. Well, he was being mistreated by her kids so she found him a better home. He is an older dog. Just turned nine. So look around. If you are interested in a Yorkie get on one of the Yorkie websites. I'll ask my wife about them if you are interested. They may be on Facebook. But she talks to people from all over the country about Winston. There is a Yorkie rescue place down in Utah she has been talking to. We may end up with another from there without having to pay some huge amount of money.
My apartment complex will not allow any dogs for its tenants other than seeing eye dogs. The manager really dislikes dogs. Says they poop and people don't use doggy bags.
He allows cats and fish, that's it. I can't afford to move elsewhere, rents around here are astronomical. I really don't like my apt, but if I move into a nicer one it would leave me with nothing per month for anything else,I'm on a fixed income.

I got a cute. It's not a picture, but it is about a cat. Two cats, in fact.
Our senior cat came into the kitchen from the garden while I was making a brew. Headbutting my legs, twining around, making a fuss. Got a nearly full bowl of food, so it wasn't that. He was talkative too, and he doesn't normally say much. Kept walking to the steps leading into the lounge, looking at me, then coming back and rubbing against my legs some more. He REALLY wanted me to go sit down.
So, I finish making my tea and am headed to my chair and I look out the open back door. There's a feral cat that's been hanging around sitting on the wall by the door, watching me. Said hi to him, always do, and carried on into the lounge, sat down, and my cat jumped on me and started cuddling. After a couple minutes, I could hear sounds from the kitchen - eating sounds. Soon as I looked towards the kitchen door, our Fleabag started headbutting my face - "pay attention to ME, Daddy. Ignore the kitchen."
After about five minutes, the sounds of eating stopped and I heard the cat leave (our back door is a stable door type, top part is open right now). Soon as the feral left, our cat got up, jumped off my lap and walked off.
The sly little bugger had kept me in the lounge so his friend could eat in peace.

The link to the fawn is gone. Sorry to miss it. I am enjoying watching twin fawns grow up. I first spotted a baby hidden in the tall grass along our driveway when it was hours old. That was in early June. The mother doe nursed in our front yard one day while wild turkeys were milling around. Now they are mostly with mom and I see them most days. We live in the country and the whitetail have big competition from axis deer and black buck antelope that have escaped from local game ranches and naturalized.
Love the border collie family photo!
Border collies are the most intelligent breed. Most people are surprised to learn what the second most intelligent breed is ... except those of us who've own them. http://petrix.com/dogint/intelligence.html. Add to their intelligence the fact that they are hypoallergenic, are non-shedding, come in all sizes and colors, are good for everything from hunting to squirrel chasing to lap companion, and you can see why so many of us are willing to endure the misdirected ridicule of loving a poodle.
Neat! I miss being in the country, to see the wildlife.@Suppressed

In the interest of full disclosure, I actually prefer the company of dogs to that of 99.5% of the people I've ever come into contact with. That is probably where the difference lies. No offense to humans. Some of my best friends have been human. But dogs... Ah, dogs. That unique combination of nobility, loyalty, transparency and silliness just speaks to me.
In light of all that, I could never have a dog that didn't follow my commands. My dogs aren't allowed to bark incessantly. Only when there's someone at the door or near the house is it allowed. They must be able to walk without a leash. Because of where I walk them, they don't have to heel, but they must come when called. Jumping up on visitors isn't allowed. They must wait for permission to take food, exit the house, step off the curb, jump in or out of the car, etc. "Sit," "stay" and "drop it" are commands they learn from the very beginning. I've actually had parents ask me to train their kids! Yes, I'm a disciplinarian, but it's served my dogs and me well.

I don't know what it is, but upon reflection, I think that it might be how some poodle owners are...that they don't "raise their dogs right"...rather than the breed. :laugh:
Nice to know I'm not the only one with such an affinity for dogs.
I am not as good a trainer as you are.
My little rescue (a miniature, about 11 lbs.) was meshuga for chasing squirrels. One day one decided to taunt her. Bad decision. He didn't know she could jump. Result: He had to scurry up the tree missing the tip of his tail.
Indulge this mama as she does a little bragging...
What an amazing leap! I watched it loop at least 15 times hoping to figure out if she makes it. I'm saying she did. What do you think?

P.S. It never occurred to me that dogs had to beware of the canine version of a cattle guard.

I give my dogs an ice bath- a rubdown with a cube when we come in from our morning walk. It is very hot here in South Texas and they really love the ice bath. My little Bobbi "wanted a fresh drink with ice" several times a day. My new girl Harriet was leery of the cubes in the water at first, but now appreciates it.

One problem with long or high-quality clips is that they can load slowly on TBR, because TBR requires GIF format, where each frame is loaded separately, not just the changes. Sometimes I can post a link that will load faster, but you won't see the image without clicking. And I'm often shrinking the size of the pics, because large ones won't fit on some screens.
I'd appreciate some feedback. Are the pics/vids I post the correct size, or should I make them bigger (or smaller)?
And do they load okay (i.e., fast enough)?

@berdie I'll let you have first pick. I'd want them all too. :)If your looking for a big dog with big love, I suggest Mastadors they are English Mastiff/ labrador Retriever mixes with the best of both. The Mastiff mellows out the Lab and they are basically couch potatoes, very low maintenance. Of course I freely admit to being biased, I have had a lot of dogs but never one as empathetic as my Mastador.

Someday I hope to live in an apt that allows dogs.Well there is a way, if you truly need and benefit from an Emotional Support Animal, my Rocky keeps me from exploding, have your doctor right you a letter stating that you need and benefit from an ESA and under the Disability Act you will have many more options including Apts. that don't normally accept pets. It's important to know the distinctions between ESA's and actually medical assistance animals where each are allowed and aren't, unfortunately there are too many people that just can't bare to be away from their babies and make it difficult for the disabled that have actual assistance animals.

And they take up marginally less space than a mastodon -- how I originally read it! @GtHawkTrue, but on the plus side, no tusks and you have the fun of the looks on people faces when they ask what kind of dog is that.
Oh you are a dear, @GtHawk , I've tried that. Even had a cousin who's a lawyer do a little pro bono work for me when my cat died, about a therapy dog. No go. The problem is I'm on a fixed income, and even though my rent is a lot, if I move to a dog friendly apt, it will be at least three to four hundred more. I can't afford that. I'd have to literally move about thirty miles or more away, which personally I don't care, or into Pennsylvania but I am two miles from an elderly momI feel for you, I am in a similar situation but it is one of the pluses of living in California that there are many dog friendly rentals and establishments and we were able to find a rental in a decent area with no restrictions or monthly pet rents.
http://i.imgur.com/r4qdi1p.mp4Back when I ran food there was a little kitten living on the lot that I spent months feeding and talking to to gain her trust, she looked like a Ragdoll. One day I was finally able to grab her, put her in the car and rush her home, two weeks later she gifted me with seven little imps that looked like the video, various colors of course. She was the most expensive kitty I ever had, but also devoted like a dog, even played fetch.

LOL on the kittens, @GtHawk! I think cats are like tribbles!Not my current Tuxedo, shes a beast, pushes around my dog and he's 150#, well until he's fed up and then he gives a cross between a bark and a roar and she remembers she's not that big :bigsilly:

Pretty crazy. Looks like he found some decent humans though.A few years back a young hawk fell out of a tree it was trying to land in at the dog park I went to. I was able to scoop him up and and get outside the fence before the dogs got him, he hung around with me on my shoulder and arm for over half an hour before he decided to go, which happened to coincide with right when Fish and Game showed up with a carrier to take him. :bigsilly:
@GtHawkYes both the people and animals need our prayers, this is affecting so many and will take a long time for all the displace to recover.
Read the story and learned the hawk is safely in the hands of wildlife rescue. I am so distressed thinking of the situation for so many people in Texas today. I cannot even begin to think of the animals, both wild and domestic, that may become victims.

Heartwarming video shows group rescuing dog from flood waters in Texas
POSTED 10:46 PM, AUGUST 29, 2017, BY FOX59 WEB
LUMBERTON, Tx. – A video captured the moment a group worked together to rescue a dog from flood waters brought on by Hurricane Harvey.
[...]
Wise says a few teenagers attempted to cross a bridge with an ATV when they got stuck. When another boy went to push the ATV the rest of the way, the dog reportedly followed and was quickly swept away.
Wise says the collar of the dog, Bandit, got stuck on some low trees. This gave the group enough time to tie a strap around one of them and go recover the pup.

Sorry, y'all. I might have had high expectations of the purpose of this thread. I was using it as a place of refuge and escape from sad/bad/contentious discussions. If I overreacted, I'm sorry. I was needing a safe place to escape from all that. Forgive me as I'm operating 24/7 with tears at the ready for all that's happened over the past week. And I didn't even get much damage! So many of my fellow Texans (family, friends, strangers) did.
On the bright side, Dickinson is needing volunteers to help with the rescued animals. I have found my niche! Now I'm just waiting to hear from them to learn how I can help.

Ahhhh.... See that's what I need. Cute, cuddly, funny -- anything that helps me escape this mean ol' world if only for a few minutes. Kittens are irresistibly cute. The only thing cuter are poodle puppies (says the crazy poodle lady).
P.S. to @Freya I'm not on Facebook either. It appears to be for public consumption because I was able to access it last night and view the video. That's how I knew what their need was and that it was a good fit for me.

Which rules out PETA and Humane Society of the United States. Two outfits that don't help very much. Stay away from PETA, they don't believe in keeping pets and kill every one they can get their hands on (even if they have to steal one from your porch), and HSUS doesn't spend much of its money on shelters, it's a political action group that lobbies for a living.
I like our AZ Humane Society quite a bit, they have a no-kill shelter.
I agree with your assessment of PETA and HSUS. I used to give to them but no longer. I sent something to Best Friends to the link on the front page. They state that every bit of the donation will go to help Hurricane Harvey critters.

Freya, @Freya our Rat Kittens woke me up this morning at 4:00 a.m. Then the
big cats joined into the fray (Fraya?) I get super duper hyperactive when I am overly tired, but I just love our kids. The "kids" told me to tell you that they love you very much. They will be sending their images over to you by this weekend. They may be hanging off of a drapery or just jumping until they tire, but you will be getting images!
@AllThatJazzZ, I'm so sorry if I contributed to that. It is a tough time, and some of us (me?) tend to tease and get a bit irreverent when things are tense. No disrespect intended at all.
Hugs. Thank you for your kind response. I was looking for sanctuary from the bad news and just got overwrought when my happy place wasn't as happy as I hoped. I'm sorry. Emotions are high for us these days. 8888crybaby

Well....I've started the process of looking online for dogs that don't shed. My Jack Russell in her later years was shedding something unbelievable.
I'm looking for a dog with these qualities.
1. Doesn't shed....or not much.
2. Is a healthy breed.
3. Small enough to pick up if needed...20 lbs give or take.
4. Would be good to walk with at the park for exercise.
5. That would be ok left alone during the day....and wouldn't destroy my house. My Jack Russell tore the curtains down and blinds when I was out of town once.
Any recommendations?
I saw a Havanese in the airport a few years back that a man was bringing home for his son. Didn't shed and was a beautiful dog. Don't know how it would be for walking though.

This is pure testament that in a world full of turmoil and strife, there is still light and joy to be found in little everyday moments.
A dear family I know has been fighting for as long as I can remember to adopt 3 of their foster children that attend our school. It's been hard to watch them fight this emotional battle. My love has grown for this family and I have learned so much from them as they have tried to remain positive despite many set backs. Today my phone rang at my desk and it was my friend Jen telling me things FINALLY had come to an end and the courts were going to let them ADOPT the children!! She asked me if I would be sure to tell her sweet girl when she came to my desk for her daily visit. She knew she would want to know right away because she had been so worried. I don't think even I could understand myself what that moment would feel like. Our security cameras caught the moment perfectly. I cry as I type this. In 12 years at this job, this is by far my best moment ever!! To tell a little girl that she gets her family forever takes the cake. I can't even describe that hug...and thank heavens her mom doesn't mind that I kissed her a million times, and a million more after the film cuts off. A moment needed after waking up to another morning of devastating news on t.v....but a sweet reminder today that life can be and still is beautiful in spite of it all. ♥️#americanheritageofsouthjordan

Yes, sorry, 991. It is just so cute! Just got back from the vet. Hank, my border terrier, hurt his paw. Nothing major, thank goodness. He is afraid of the office kitten who looks like part Siamese, but she has a striped tail. She jets around the office, waiting room and in and out of the treatment room. Pouncing and just silly. Baby animals are the best! I saw two cottontails together in my yard this week.Then I found cottontail babies yesterday! They are fully furred with eyes open. The last nest I found did not fare well. Either the hot sun or the fire ants got the babies shortly after birth. I live in a rural area and there is plenty of habitat and I wish they would nest elsewhere. I have to patrol before I let my dogs out.

imgur.com is still free (though they're being jerks now and won't let you do much on mobile unless you use their app). If you use computer or Desktop Mode, rather than mobile, it's fine.

I started the process of looking for another dog today. I can't believe how much it costs to buy a dog. I looked at a Havanese.....$2000. Even for another Jack Russell....close to $1000 or more.
Guess I'll continue to look at the adoption websites. It's amazing when you look at the local animal shelter and the majority of the animals are pitbulls.
Geez....I'm not buying a car!...lol.

It's a terrible thing, but without knowing the history of those pitbulls it is a huge risk to adopt even though Pits can be among the most loving and loyal dogs. Everyone of my animals has been adopted and up until the last dog I never knew exactly what they were other than mutts. I know there is a great attraction to purebreds but I have been very satisfied with all of the mutts I have saved.

Singing to comfort Bentley in the hospital
by EARTH Sanctuary Published on Mar 28, 2015

Bentley is my rescued 9-month-old pot-bellied pig. On Feb 23 a seizure left him in a state of shock and he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, potentially fatal. He was given only a ten percent chance to live and yet he survived against all odds, though the meningitis left him blind. He is still in the hospital recuperating from his most recent surgery, and once his wounds heal, we will be able to finally bring him home. Every day, Bentley teaches me to be strong and never to give up. Through all of this, he has been nothing but happy, working so hard to regain the neurological function he lost due to the brain swelling. His fight to survive and to conquer every obstacle in his path is awe-inspiring. He is so very loved, and I'm so incredibly grateful he chose me as his Mum.
To a tiny little blind pig, the hospital noises can be very scary, so on my trips to see him every day, I sing to him to comfort him and reassure him that he is loved and that everything is going to be ok. Like all pigs, Bentley is incredibly intelligent and affectionate, and responds to love just like any human child would. I miss him so much when I have to leave him there every day and I can't wait until he can finally come home.
UPDATE: Despite the insurmountable odds stacked against him, Bentley survived the meningitis and regained his eyesight. He came home from the hospital and is now a happy, healthy, perfectly normal piglet after making a complete recovery. He is loved and cherished more than anything, and we're so very grateful for all of the millions of thoughts, prayers, donations toward his medical care, and well-wishes from around the world. Who knew that a tiny little pig would touch so many hearts?

They're Hell on Wheels growing up. We have two more that are about 5 months old, some days I come home and Mrs. Liberty is sobbing from some mess they've done....One of ours was killed as a kitten by my aging dog. She had gone into the dog's dish, and the dog nipped at her. Even though the dog's mouth was soft, and it was just a nip, she was just a tiny kitten and didn't survive.

Beautiful kitty!
One of my neighbor's horse was down yesterday morning. My dog, Hank, was upset and wanted to go to her. He woofed softly. The other horse came over to try to get her up. I called my neighbor and the poor chestnut mare was suffering from tannin poisoning from acorns. She was able to get the mare up and confined to the barn. I am praying for her recovery.
We've had a bumper crop of acorns this year and I see lots of whitetail congregating under the live oaks. I guess deer can tolerate them.
This morning, Hank was looking for the mare and wanted to go to the place she'd been lying down. Hank is the dearest dog with such a big heart.
Prayers for the mare's recovery. Poor Hank is worried about his friend. Hopefully, he will get to see her soon.@Applewood

Update on Jazzy, the chestnut mare. She is going to be okay. She is being penned right now so she can't get at the acorns. Her feet are still tender from the tannin and my friend is working with her farrier. Hank still looks for her every morning.888high58888

That one reminds me of our dog... her previous owner apparently taught her not to get up on furniture, including the bed. Our bed is low enough however, that she can get her entire body onto the bed, except for her hind feet. She leaves those on the floor, so that technically (in her mind) she's not "up on the bed". :laugh:

A young sheepdog lent new meaning to the phrase “bringing the sheep home” after he led a flock straight into a farmer’s home.
Rosalyn Edwards was working in her kitchen on Wednesday 25 October, when she suddenly started to hear strange noises.
When she turned around she was stunned to discover her Border collie puppy, Rocky, had proudly led nine sheep into her house.
The seven-month-old sheepdog-in-training had taken advantage of an open gate to usher the sheep through into the Edwards’ home in Devon via the back door.

Really good ones today- don't know which one I liked most.
My little rescue Harriet, whom I've had only four months, started screaming Tuesday morning. Went to the vet and learned her left knee cap is going in and out. Have Previcox but could not get her to take it or even eat or drink. I was sick to my stomach to see her in such pain. She finally slept a little, hiding in her crate. I left her alone because she wanted that. This morning she got up on her own, still screaming. I finally got her to eat and she now has first dose of Previcox onboard. It is not fast acting so I also gave her a little Tramadol. She is resting quietly now. I am so worried but relieved she is not in as much pain.

Wow, that's bad!
Pardon my ignorance, but is there something like wrapping the knee that would give it stability to strengthen, or is this something that's chronic and you just treat the pain and inflammation?
Doc didn't mention anything about that. I will ask but I think the treatment is medication for pain and inflammation. She is little so I pick her up to put her on the couch. She jumps down on her own sometimes which probably aggravated the condition she had been tolerating. I will never leave her on a piece of furniture again.

@austingirl , talk with @Victoria33 , I think her Yorkie Prissy was having the same or a similar problem, that wound up needing surgery to correct.

My Prissy had to have her knee put back in place and tendons cut to hold it there. A Vet Orthopedic Specialist did it - cost $1,200. Her knee is fine now. If you wait too long to fix it, it will not fix well, too much damage will have been done to the "case" the knee is in.
She's been sleeping, but woke an hour ago, got up without screaming and ran to the door to go outside. She used both back legs to scratch so I am hoping she can be managed with meds. I will consider surgery if she doesn't recover.

Prissy was six this past July 30. The doc said if I let it go for a year or more, arthritis would set in, and she would be crippled even after the surgery with the amount of damage and arthritis in there. The first vet said let it go until it wouldn't go back in, then he would fix it. He was not an orthopedic surgeon so that from him was bad advice.
A story that happened today. I took Prissy to her groomer, a lady in her late forties or so. She is my friend. Her left arm had a cast on it and I asked her what happened. She fell on a dance floor and disjointed her wrist and broke both arm bones - the ulna and radius. She was in pain. The cost of the surgery is $10,000 and she doesn't have insurance. Her son sold some of his 401k to pay for it and that takes time. That happened two weeks ago so it hasn't been fixed - she is living with broken bones in her arm. The surgery is next week for steel pins and screws, etc.. Her income is cut down since she can't do big dogs now with only one arm able to function. She has little money.
I put a $100 bill in my jacket to give to her when I picked up Prissy. I didn't think to tell Bob I was doing that. When I was getting out of the car to go in there, Bob handed me a $100 bill to give to her. I told him I was doing that, too.
So, I go in and the groomer is sitting with the secretary. I pulled out my $100 bill and said I was giving that to her for what she needed, don't give it to a doctor or son or anyone, it was for her. She started crying and walked around the deck to come to me. Then, I took out the other $100 bill and said Bob wanted her to have that. She put her arms around me and cried heavily.
Then, she walked outside - it has been raining all day - into the rain to go talk to Bob. He told her not to catch cold adding to her problem and go back inside.
We both felt we had to help this dear woman who loves our Prissy. She will call us after the surgery to tell us how she is. Her name is Karen - if you pray, keep her in your prayers. Thanks.

I couldn't stand the idea of her having no money and I had some I won and she had a useless arm with broken bones and was living with the pain. When Prissy was sick with her leg, Karen offered to come to the house to bathe her and comb her out - for free. I would have paid her, of course, if we had to do that, but she offered that from her good heart.
If everyone acted through love with other people, this world would be different. That is part of what my next book is about - act through love. This world is doomed if love for others is gone.

Me too. I've paid it forward a couple of times.
I love paying it forward for the simple reason it makes ME feel happy.When I was a kid, I never understood anonymous donations. Like a typical kid, I wanted credit when I did something good! But as an adult, I do those things all the time and the "credit" isn't the important part anymore.
It's a twofer. Good deed for someone and I feel happy doing it.
As good as a donut but no calories

My mother pays it forward often, and the other day, someone actually did the same for her -- it really made her day. She was getting the $5.99 lunch special at a Chinese restaurant with my dad. My dad is blind and has other medical issues, so he needs lots of help with getting the food into a bowl where he can scoop it up, etc.
My mom noticed that the only other patron in the restaurant was looking at them a lot, and when she went to pay at the end of the meal, it turns out the other lady had paid, saying she wanted to do something nice for my mom for all of the work it takes to help my dad.
Just hearing that someone noticed and appreciated her efforts made her day even more than the cost of the meal, I think (though that part was appreciated, too)!
Yay! I think that's beautiful @Suppressed
I hope he got a good fortune cookie too.

I love pugs

Victoria33, you are a gem to help your groomer. I will pray for her.
Harriet insisted on sleeping in bed last night. Not a peep out of her. She is eating well and resting now. I am monitoring her closely and so far, so good. Thanks for your kind thoughts. We love our dear little companions so very much.
@austingirl
So her pain is gone. Thank God for that.

@austingirl
Happy to hear Harriet may be feeling better. Prayers continuing.
@CatherineofAragon
Yes, I am so grateful, and frankly, amazed about how she has bounced back. She is a survivor. If there is a recurrence of the pain I will consult an orthopedic surgeon.
@austingirl
I think animals, even small ones, are tougher than we sometimes believe. I've come to think so, anyway.
@CatherineofAragon
Agreed. I've heard that animals do not personalize pain the way humans do- they just accept it and bear it. This little girl had a horrible early life- she was a puppy mill breeder who was thrown away. I will give her the best possible life I can.

I told about our groomer, Karen, who broke both her left arm bones and dislocated her wrist in a fall. She had to wait for two weeks until her son could borrow money for the surgery. Bob and I gave her some money just for her for what she needed. One thing she got was a new housecoat - she said her dog chewed up the other one.
The surgery was yesterday. The surgeon said he had never seen an arm that bad from a fall and didn't know why her wrist wasn't broken, just pulled out of place. Because it was so bad, it took FOUR hours to reconstruct her arm. There is a metal plate and EIGHT SCREWS IN HER BONES.
He did a nerve block to numb the arm. He gave her hydrocodone pills and said she had to take them, that when the nerve block went away, she was going to be in bad pain and told her she could not go to work for a week.
Karen is stubborn, in her 50s, doesn't like to take pills, but she promised the doc and me she would do what the doc said and take them. When I talked to her, the nerve block was still working.
She doesn't know how long it will take to be able to use the arm but goes back to the doc on Dec. 1. So, right now she is stuck in the house but at least she has a new housecoat to wear. Keep Karen in your prayers; she is a lover of animals and treats Prissy like her own. She is her own employer so she won't make any money until she can go back to work at the Vet's office.

While maintaining strong caution about painkillers, she should be made aware that an extensive body of research shows that pain inhibits healing. When doctors prescribe painkillers, it's not just for comfort.

How's Harriet doing?
Life with the new Jack Russell puppy........... geez......
Got the 12 week old female over a week ago. This dog is twice as hyper as my last one. When I got her the breeder said she was litter box trained. To my amazement, she pees and poops in a litter box in her crate. Of course when the litter box is out of the crate, she may hike a leg on the side of the litter box tub....but at least she's close...lol. Probably averaging about 75% accuracy...lol.
The first night she howled and cried, so being the soft hearted person I am...I grabbed some pillows and slept beside her crate....which seemed to do the trick.
This has to be the most loving dog I've been around as she wants to be held and petted constantly. My previous Jack was VERY independent and would kind of tolerate you on her terms...lol.
To burn off energy, this new Jack will run laps in the living room. I need to start taking her to walk at the park to lower the energy level. That ought to be an adventure.
So far so good with the new dog....sure wouldn't want to leave her alone in my house though....not sure what would be left when I returned.
I drop the dog off at my 87 yr. old mom's house in the afternoon for her to babysit. This has been great for my mom, to have companionship. The dog tends to get a 2 hr rubdown.
So far this has been a good decision.....
This made me giggle.

Karen, the groomer, who broke her arm, dislocated her wrist, and has a metal plate and six screws in her arm two bones, is still not able to work; her arm is still healing. She went to the doc yesterday and he took out stitches, and it was my YORKIE, PRISSY, who saved the day!
Karen wanted permission to groom little dogs like Prissy, so she explained how Prissy was during a groom, a nice little dog who didn't fight her.
The doc said she could groom dogs like Prissy if she wore plastic covering her left arm so no germs got to her arm, but no other type dogs, yet. The first little dog she will groom is Prissy this coming Wednesday. I'll add more money to her bill when I pay.
Karen said it would have been better to break her leg than her arm, at least she could groom with a broken leg. All of you reading this, be thankful both your arms work.

Golden with the pumpkins- I make pumpkin cookies for my doggies. One can of pumpkin- not pumpkin pie filling-one egg- some oatmeal, brown rice flour and/or whole wheat flour, molasses and cinnamon. Mix well, until sticky, bake at 350 until browned. They adore these treats and they are healthy.

Project SNOWstorm aims to track snowy owls in Wisconsin this winter

Big and beautiful, snowy owls are the definition of a charismatic wildlife species.
The birds are the heaviest owl (from 3 to 6 pounds) in North America and have 5-foot wingspans. In addition, they possess bright white plumage, often accented with dark barring, and large yellow eyes.

Hold on to your horses, snowy owls are being seen in the US and perhaps as far south as Oklahoma. I was by a lake one winter night, I could see it was an owl; now I think considering its shape and size, it may have been a snowy owl.

My work here is done...30 years ago our neighbors convinced my wife that we needed two kittens that were the product of an incesetuous usion between a mother and son. The first year they were fine. The second year was a nightmare. We should have had a hint when they managed to pull the antique lamp and tatted tablecloth off the round end table breaking it into about a hundred pieces. No tree for the next 6 years.

I don't know if I'd blame that in the incest. Some cats have the "Kitten" gene permanently turned on. I had one take two years to calm down, I have two 7-month-olds chasing each other around the house right now. Every morning at this time.@Cyber Liberty These cats were severely drain bamaged. Those were two tiny examples of the "stuff" they got into. The black one would just randomly Hiss and snarl at people for no reason, and on more than one occasion the orange on would just run into walls.

Trying to summon the Dark Lord, eh?
Has anyone used a shock collar on dog?@mrpotatohead
My JRT doesn't seem to like my built in oven and seems to want to attack it...lol. When I open the door to it, she goes ballistic. I bought one of those shock collars that goes off if the animal comes within 3-12' of what you choose. It puts out a tone with a very very mild static shock. I was surprised how well it works. I only had to put it on her for maybe 5 minutes and then she had no desire to go in the kitchen. My mom is 87 and I can't risk her falling over the dog in the kitchen...that would be horrible.
I'm thinking about using it again at the front door...to keep her from trying to get out. If she bolted...I'd never catch her.
I was thinking they were praying. My cat sometimes "kneels" over the armrest on the sofa and looks like he's praying.
Ok, somebody haul me away. I've lost my mind.

What is he again, @BassWrangler?
Australian Labradoodle, which is basically an attempt to create a stable breed rather than just randomly breeding a poodle and a lab. They are known for their allergy friendly coat and a high percentage that can pass the service dog training.
I selected this breed because my sis has labradoodles, which I adore, and I wanted a dog that hadn’t been inbred so much that it has genetic issues. Will probably get a second dog that is a rescue/mutt. But since I have literally been waiting my entire life to have a dog, I thought we would go this route for our first.
Cute overload
Cute overloadthe best and worst things about puppies is thy got from zero to 60 in 3 seconds flat. They will spend the next 10 minutes at 60, and then go back down to zero in 3 seconds flat. Twenty years ago we got a pup to keep the older dog company. He kept giving us the "Why did you do this to me,what did I do wrong" look. Six months later they were inseparable, and I almost felt sorry for anyone that tried to bother her.

Hi @Cyber Liberty . How are things with you?
What a cutie BW...I am a sucker for puppies.
I wanted a pup for Christmas but with 3 already it would be too much.
Going well. Having the two weeks off work did a lot of good things for my disposition. I've been working too hard, and carrying it home emotionally for too long. This is one of my favorite threads because it's like a balm for my soul. I'm loving the new puppy pictures...You? Haven't seen enough of you around.

Can you believe this is my first? My parents briefly had a yellow lab when I was a kid, but my dad did basically everything wrong w.r.t. training it, and got the expected results, and then they gave it away. Even as a little kid it seemed like a blink of an eye before he was gone, so I am guessing we just had it for a month or so. Wanted one ever since then, but various life events intervened, so just getting one now. My wife has had dogs before, though.

Pronghorns?
I believe the guy in the truck said they were "deers".
Yeah, but I think they are pronghorn antelope. I've never seen that many in together before.
Dry humor is so hard to convey in an online posting. :thud:
You are both such deers. @Sanguine @Ghost Bear
There was a herd of those critters out and about in my farm boy days--around 300--in that bunch.
If I use the word pronghorn around my wife she thinks it is an invite.
Yeah, but I think they are pronghorn antelope. I've never seen that many in together before.

@Sanguine
The herd comes through every once in a while, sometimes right past the front porch but usually down on a ledge. I think they are visiting the water guzzler we have for the critters. Saw the herd this afternoon along with a big flock of about 30 wild turkeys.

That's not real Chinese. :)
There's a Chinese restaurant across the street from me, it looks like a dive inside but it's really good and inexpensive and no msg. It's take out only, with two tables. But for 6.99 you get a meal plus rice, egg roll, and fortune cookie. (Chicken, pork, tofu, or beef. Shrimp is more expensive)
I don't like "real" Chinese. Chickens feet and chopped duck? No thank you. **nononono*My brother was at one time a production manager for Hunter Sprinklers, he would go to China once or twice a year to visit the facilities that made the parts. He would talk about how Peking Duck was always part of the business dinners, he said they would bring out a beautiful roast duck for approval then take it back to the kitchen, moments later they returned with bowls of chopped up duck. Yeah sure it was magnificent roast duck they showed, that was probably the display duck shown to every customer that ordered Peking Duck, what they actually got :shrug: (http://i39.tinypic.com/2hf2z49.jpg)

My best friend's cat loves to plunk himself down in the most inconvenient places. They live in a 2 story house with the bathroom upstairs. If I go upstairs, the cat will run ahead of me, then suddenly stop and sit on one of the steps. And he won't move either. I have to pick him up. I think it's a game to him. He may not be trying to kill me, but he relishes in making me crazy.

Studying the effects of weightlessness on a living mammal at 25,000′; ca. 1958
From The Times Magazine, a “Portrait of the Ideal Space Man,†if not the ideal space cat, from February 1958. As experts were contemplating the medical specifics of what weightlessness in space would do to a living, breathing human being, an unlucky kitten was volunteered as a stand-in, floating from the hand of Capt. Druey P. Parks inside an F-94C jet at 25,000 feet. The article, by Donald G. Cooley, characterized the cat’s reaction as “bewilderment.â€

You know, you would think that someone in the design group might have done a failure analysis and figured that out, or even pointed out how easy it would be for the driver, while fumbling around to adjust the vent or tune the radio, to accidentally hit one of those buttons and cause all kinds of havoc. :shrug:

A homeless man died, leaving behind a pack of alley cats. His neighbors came to the rescue.

Antonio Garcia
For maybe a decade, Antonio Garcia lived in an alley in a gentrified Chicago neighborhood. He made a shelter from wood scraps and mattresses, and he had as his companions dozens of feral cats, which he considered family.
He befriended a few people in the upscale community, Fulton River District, some of whom took to stopping by with food for him and the cats. Nearby restaurant owners liked that Garcia kept away any riffraff, and they liked that the cats scared off rats.
Garcia, 65, died of hypothermia in January after a particularly cold spell. A few of his neighborhood friends tearfully cleaned up his alley, but there was the problem of the cats — dozens of them, hungry and skittish now that their protector was gone.

Loyal dog refuses to leave hospital where owner died four months ago
The Independent
Lucy Pasha-Robinson
A pet dog whose owner was fatally stabbed has made a home for himself in front of the hospital where the man died.
The animal, who has no name, has been waiting in front of the Santa Casa de Novo Horizonte hospital in Brazil for four months, according to local media reports.
The dog first arrived at the unit after chasing after the ambulance that was transporting his owner, a 59-year-old homeless man, to hospital in October.
The man, who had been involved in a street fight, died from his injuries but two months on, the dog continued to wait for him in front of the hospital, Brazil's O Globo newspaper reported.

Okay, okay he's ten years old and a lot whiter around the muzzle, so am I, but he still comes when I call puppy.
The pics of puppies (regardless of age) really amped up this thread! Gazing at dog/puppy pics is my best therapy. "Puppy" is one of my favorite words in the English language, and I wish puppy breath could be bottled so it could be enjoyed every day. In short, I LOVE DOGS!
And naturally, I love mine the most.
And BTW, @austingirl has the best avatar, imho.

Glad to hear you say that. As much as I adore my dog(s)*, there are times when I want to be unpestered. Then I start to feel guilty. Dogs generally tend to require more hands-on than cats, and I understood that when I signed up to be a dog mama. Nevertheless, I do need a little block of time here and there to meet my human needs.@AllThatJazzZ

Yes, when he does that I call it "Master of the Patio". He's standing on the steps that go down into our tiny back yard patio area. He likes to stand there and sniff, observe the goings on, and listen for the birds and some animal that lives in the bushes just on the other side of the fence.

I wash my dog in the shower. Our shower has one of those detachable nozzles, so it's really easy. I just open the shower door and he walks right in. Put on some doggie shampoo, rinse him off, open the door and he dives headfirst into the towel I laid out for him while I finish my own shower. Hardest part is finishing the drying while he is trying to eat the towel.The drying off with the towel is my dogs favorite part, if he had his way I would keep rubbing him even after he was dry.

Dogs steal mail carrier's lunch, then their apology note goes viralThem there dogs is called Mastadors Ma'am, I knows cause I gots one! (http://i66.tinypic.com/5behs7.jpg)
For decades, students across the country have offered up the classic excuse, "Dog ate my homework." But now, a letter carrier in Smithfield, Virginia is saying, "Dogs ate my lunch." And the story that unfolded has amused thousands of people on social media.
In June, Carol Jordan, who owns a five-acre farm in Isle of Wight, Virginia, stopped at her mailbox and discovered a handwritten note there from the woman who delivers her family's mail.
"Our immediate thought was, 'What did the boys do now?'" she told CBS News.
"The boys" in question are Bear and Bull, Jordan's 6-year-old black Labrador/mastiffs, which she and her husband rescued from a high kill shelter in North Carolina as puppies. Bear and Bull are brothers from the same litter, though Jordan notes that Bull -- the smaller one with the white spot on his chest -- is the ringleader when it comes to getting into trouble.
In this instance, however, it turns out the boys actually weren't in trouble. On the contrary, the neighborhood's friendly letter carrier actually left the family a note out of concern for the dogs' well-being.

@austingirl
They are a wonderful mix, of course since there is no real standard any Mastiff bred with any Labrador results in a Mastador. I adopted mine, he was one of seven that were the result of inadequate fencing and lust. One neighbors English Mastiff went into heat and the other neighbors American Field Lab answered the call. My dog is an old man now, he just turned ten and has been a pretty consistent 150# for the last four or five years. Mastadors are gentle, easy going, faithfull, and couch potatoes. They look like over sized Labrador Retrievers.
Oh that picture of him on the swing with me? He did that on his own, he just lined up beside the swing and lay down, it was one of his favorite places.

Dawg or Cat?I am thinking a weird mix of both

@Freya
Thank you, he's been my best friend for ten years, I got him after I lost a dog and felt, I don't know like something was missing. I did a search of the local rescues and saw him and was just drawn to him, after a visit to the local shelter was a wash we just made it to the rescues event where he would be. They had all the dogs at the event loose in a fenced area and we went in and sat down, here where it gets a bit weird, one of the pups(pup is a joke he was 55 pounds at 5 months) came up to me and rested his head on my arm looking at me, he was the same dog I was drawn to on their website, had the same scratch on his nose. Oddly, we decided to adopt him even though the fee was a burden at the time. Sometimes you just have to go with Fate. If I believed in reincarnation I would swear he was a kitten I rescued from a parking lot where I worked, she was devoted to me and was very dog like, would play fetch as long as I would throw the toy and always wanted to sit with me, she lived for eighteen years.

Thank you for setting me straight.@Applewood
I have no experience with Mastadors, but I did meet a mastiff once. Friend and I were walking through a dog friendly park near her home. We two old ladies had stopped to rest and were sitting on a bench when we were approached by a mastiff and his owner. My friend saw the dog first at a bit of a distance and since her eyes are as bad as mine, she thought it was a bear. I said I doubt it -- never saw a bear walking through a park on a leash with a human. LOL
Anyway, dog and owner came close and the dog wanted to come over to see us. So the owner let him. The owner advised us that despite the mastiff's intimidating size, he was actually a gentle giant. The dog came over to me and put his head on my lap (the head felt like a ton of bricks). He just wanted some pets and a few ear scratches, so I obliged. Really sweet dog.

It's all in the training, I got the pulling all out of my dogs system when he was very young, I had a bad back then and after two surgeries it's worse. The biggest problem I have with him now is not the pulling, it's the sudden stops when without notice he turns into a 150# anchor to smell something.

Harriet is in the hospital tonight, getting IV fluids. I've had her only a year. She's always had an odd health issue- every five days her tummy would gurgle and she's refuse to eat in the morning. It happened almost like clockwork, but she always bounced and felt better and ate in the evening. This weekend she vomited and didn't bounce.
I took her in yesterday for bloodwork and she got three injections, ABX, antinauseal, and pain med. She had a quiet night. This morning she took some water and I gave her three tiny pieces of Purina OM dry food. She threw it up so I took her in and I'm missing her like crazy. Very hard to accept she won't be here tonight. She is scheduled for a sonogram in the morning.
Hank seems to be missing her, too.
So sorry to hear that @austingirl. It's a awful feeling. Hopefully, you will let us know tomorrow that's she's fine.

Thanks to @Sanguine @verga @Suppressed @GtHawk @ Applewood for your kind thoughts.
Harriet had a good night. I'm getting ready to go to the vet, the sonogram people are on the way.
The sonogram was CLEAR. Wonderful news. The bad news is we have no diagnosis. Harriet is staying another day and they will start water and feeding under controlled conditions. Of course I wanted to bring her home, but this is the best for her. I took Hank for moral support. I was even mature enough to leave without seeing her because she'd be so upset when I left again. She should be home tomorrow.

Not at this time. I'm starting to think it was the Bravecto three month flea pill she got last week that caused the vomiting because there isn't another explanation. She didn't vomit during her earlier episodes of "bad tummy." Her diet will be very strict and I am hoping for the best.
She kept food and water down at the vet today and I'll bring her home tomorrow.
Thanks, everyone for your support.

Harriet is home with a pretty pink bandage on her IV site. She was subdued when I went to get her out of the cage. She didn't rush out as I thought she would. Maybe she couldn't believe her eyes. Hank walked right the cage and nuzzled her. Once she realized we were at the house, her tail started wagging and she knew she was home. Right now she is resting quietly next to me on the couch.
The vet thinks it's quite possible that it was Bravecto. She is on a special diet for three days and I'll be careful adding back foods as instructed. Her periodic tummy gurgles and this episode may be unrelated. I hate not knowing the cause but I'm so relieved and happy to have her home.

You know how sometimes when you have new little puppies in the house and you think they're sleeping because it's quiet in the other room? You might want to check on that. Just because they're not running or wrestling doesn't mean they're sleeping...
They could be quietly tearing up Mama's living room.
Then one of them will give you that "I really hope you like it" look, and you'll be defenseless against their cuteness.
One is still with me. The other awaits us in heaven. How I wish I could start all over again and have another 15 years with them.
I have nine precious ones waiting for me. I miss them so. But Hank and Harriet keep me company. Dogs are the best.

How big can a moose get? Check this out:
https://twitter.com/backt0nature/status/1092828119470403585
I read up on some deer that lived long ago, the thing was actually huge but this in the video, is huge in itself as well.
The thing about moose is they don't care. They go where they want and do what they want. Best advice is to not mess with them.
My brother crossed paths with a cow with a calf moose while out elk hunting. He had to flee for his life, down through the pines, with the cow hot on his heels. Scared the heck out of him.
We had a neighbor who told us this story. He and a friend were headed up through the high desert here in Idaho, also going elk hunting. They came to a moose track, in fresh snow, headed up the road. Another pickup came up behind them in a big hurry. When they got to a spot wide enough this other pickup went roaring around them. A couple of miles further here sat that pickup. He and his friend got out to see what was going on. This other pickup had caught up to the moose making the track, a big bull. They said they started honking their horn, flashing their lights, trying to get the moose off the road. They said the moose turned around and using its front legs, it stomped the hood of their pickup down. Put a hole in the radiator and left a perfect imprint of the air cleaner in the hood, leaving them dead in the water. They said the moose left off the attack, turned around, and went ambling back up the road.
Don't mess with moose. They will kill you. Without looking it up I would bet more people are injured by moose than by bears.
(https://i.imgur.com/hxUCeFx.jpg)
@240BThought of that too. With this thing skulking through the brush, it would be hard to place it as being a cat in day or night. I'm sure it is well fed.

The inner-city courtyard reportedly began to fill up with soft toys years ago when a resident of the building alongside found a lost teddy bear and propped it against a wall in the hope its owner would return.

The owner never did claim the toy. But according to Pavel Morozovski, who runs a small museum alongside the courtyard, young locals then began dropping off toys they had outgrown instead of throwing them away.

Some dogs just don't play fair. Who could stand up to this preciousness?
So many dogs and cats with afflictions are rejected for adoption, and it's a shame because most of them, unlike us, don't dwell on their illnesses, disabilities or old age. They make the best of what they have and if you take them into your home, you will be rewarded with a loving companion -- a reward worth more than gold. Great that this fellow took in a dog just like him. I believe he is and will continue to be amply blessed.We adopted Raimo about 2 years ago. He had been found by the side of a road after being hit by a car. When he came into the foster agency we work with he was found to be blind, epileptic and he had a heart murmur and some kidney issues. The "smart thing" would have been to put him down. Instead a woman named Diane gave him a good home. She went out of town to visit her children and we ended up doing respite care. I fell in love with him and we adopted him. He is one of the happiest dogs you will ever meet and he eitehr doesn't know he is blind or he just doesn't care. He is loving and doe snot let his problems slow him down. Our lives would be a lot poorer without him.

Not really. I have given cats baths in a 5 gallon bucket. Once you dump them in the bucket or the tub,they are as wet as they can get,and there is nothing to fight about.
They don't seem to like you much for a couple of days afterwards,though.

My first cat slipped off a window sill and fell into her litterbox. Waste all over, so I had to bathe her. She squirmed and cried the whole time, but didn't bite me. But when we were done and she was towel dried, she stared licking herself all over. Before long, her "extra bath" made her fur stand up. She looked like she had a punk hairdo. Wish I had a photo, but I didn't have a camera or smartphone back then. I guess I laughed at her, which must have made a bad situation worse because my normally very sociable cat ignored me for the rest of the day. Spent most of the time in her favorite hiding place and wouldn't come out unless I left the room.
IRL, the kitty would have shredded the woman's arm. wink777
@ApplewoodThank you for a great story. @sneakypete l
I accidentally acquired the weirdest,and maybe the meanest female cat in the world when living in one of two houses on a horse ranch outside of Denver. The people that lived in the other house moved out one day,and a couple of days later I happened to look over and see a tortoise shell calico cat sitting in a window. House was locked,so I broke a window to let her out. She followed me home and moved in. I said to myself,"Ok,no big deal. She only weighs maybe 5 or 6 lbs so she can't eat that much.
She lived for maybe another 10 years,and I still miss her.
@sneakypete
Thanks for sharing that great story. In my experience it seems the toughest cats are almost always female. I don't know why that is -- maybe it has something to do with a mother's instinct to protect her kittens. I have one friend who years ago shared a rented house with another friend. My friend had 2 cats, one male, one female, and the roommate had a female dog. In that house, the female cat was boss. The male cat and the dog were terrified of her.
As to your father's relationship with the cat: Cats often seem to sense when people don't like them or are afraid of them and they sometimes will cozy up to them. My mother didn't like cats, but when she came to my house, my sociable first cat would always sit by her or try to sit on her lap and purr. And all the cats I had knew when I didn't feel well. They would always park on top of me or beside me when I was lying down. My first cat would sit on me and knead my tummy. That kneading was a great remedy for a variety of ailments.
@sneakypete Great story.
@AllThatJazzZ Scary story.
It is MY opinion that cats are a LOT smarter than most people think, but they are just uninterested in most of what they see going on, so they ignore it.
@austingirl
It was so scary that that was the last cat I rescued. I put my dogs in danger. What was I thinking? **nononono*
@AllThatJazzZ
I'm a dog person all the way although I did trap some feral kittens and a mama cat twice. Found homes for the babies and got mama spayed. Only a few minor scratches. I'm very allergic to cats and have never had one. My terrors don't like them.
I'm a dog person as well but I had a feral take up residence and have a litter. I made sure they were fed, kept the dogs away and eventually trapped all of them to go get fixed. They hung around. The MaMa cat (Mink) lived here for 10 years. Outside, in this area, that is quite an accomplishment. She was the one that really made me respect feline intelligence. One day, after 10 years outside, she decided she wanted to come in and check things out. She did that for about a week, always wanting to go back outside. But one day she stayed and I couldn't boot her out. She lived for about 3 years after that...always very polite. Used the litter box, never tore things up never was a pita. AND the dogs, also inside, steered clear of her, lol. I miss her still.

never saw this before, a young axis buck hanging out with a young whitetail
That is odd.
There's a yearling buck here who keeps trying to join in when the little goats are hopping around and playing. He's been trying to play with them since he was little and spotted.
@Sanguine
Maybe orphaned and lonely?

No, mama is usually nearby. The little goats have such a good time I think he just wants to join in. The goats seem to think he's funny-looking and won't let him play.
I don't care who you are, this is just plain cute!

Black cat takes the field during Monday Night Football
Halloween may be over, but that didn't stop a black cat from making its presence known on Monday night. In the middle of a Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, a black cat darted onto the field as stunned fans and commentators looked on.
The cat wandered the field before sprinting through the Giants' end zone, and eventually disappeared under a seat section. Some fans believe the cat brought bad luck — the Giants had been leading the Cowboys prior to the disruption, but ended up losing 37-18.

If it a feral adult cat it's probably beyond being domesticated.
@sneakypete
Hopefully you won't need a trap. I've had to do that.
@Cyber Liberty
I won't use a trap. I will probably use a capture cage on the adult cat,though.
I'll just have to pick up any kitten that gets close enough,and put it in a cardboard box because they aren't heavy enough to trigger the capture cage trap door.
Straphanger takes mini horse on Bay Area train ride
A mini horse that serves as a Bay Area resident’s service animal was allowed on a commuter train in San Francisco Tuesday, the transit agency said.
The horse’s owner provided paperwork to a transit worker on the BART train and the horse was cleared for entry, the train system said on Twitter.
“After consultation (station agents usually don’t see horses), the horse was allowed in,†BART said in the message.

@PeterS
Not true. I have a formally feral female cat laying next to me on a stool. She was one of the feral cats I feed behind a store,and I fed her from the time she was a kitten,to the time she was maybe 2 or 3 years old before bringing her home.
I was feeding the cats one day when she came up to me and started rubbing her head against my ankles and purring. I had never even touched her before,but I just picked her up,put her in my truck,and took her home with me. It wasn't long before I figured out what her plan was. She was pregnant,and there were problems with the pregnancy. I took her to the vet and she had 9 kittens with the help of surgery,but all buy 1 died. I brought that one home and tried to bottle feed him until his mother was well and could nurse,but he only lasted 3 days. She is still in my house 3 years later,and damned if she isn't half again as big as she was now that she can eat her fill and sleep without having to run away from other animals.
I also have 4 other cats I got from behind those dumpsters. The big tom was a yellow stripped kitten someone dropped off with his sister just before a big snow storm maybe 3 years ago. His sister froze to death one night,and he was sick and going blind. Luckily for him,there was a little tom there at the time that seemed to "adopt and babysit" sick kittens,and that's how I figured out the yellow tom kitten was sick and going blind. He couldn't get far away from where he was fed because he was weak and couldn't see very good,so the other little tom stayed with him and hugged him to keep him warm. I just picked him up one day and took him to the vet. We managed to save one eye,but the other had to be taken out. The most recent is a little crazy female that was really too young to be weaned when she was dropped off,and just about starved by the time I caught her. She is as nice as she can be one day,and the next day walk around with her back humped and spitting at anything that moves.
Somebody dropped off some kittens there a week ago. The guy that feeds them in the morning caught one,but there is a really fuzzy black one I spotted a few days ago that ran away and hasn't been seen since,and a couple of days ago I spotted a tiny little fluff ball Maine Coon looking kitten. She is so tiny she hops instead of running. She actually started to come right up to me tonight when I fed them,but there was a new adult black shorthair female there that hisses and scared her away. This was a housecat somebody dropped off. I know this because when she saw me coming with the food bag,she ran right up to me to get fed,and she was so hungry she got under the bag when I was pouring the food out and tried to eat is as it was falling. Any adult cat that will walk right up to a stranger in the open is a house cat. Plus her fur was bright and shiny. When she hissed,the kitten shrieked,spun around,and hopped away,and that got all of them running.
I suspect I will be catching that adult female in the next few days and talking her to the SPCA. Going to try to catch the kittens and take them there,too.
If it a feral adult cat it's probably beyond being domesticated. It's mostly the kittens of ferals that can be socialized and domesticated. The best that can be done for an adult feral is to spay/neuter and then release it where it can continue keeping down the rodent population.
A friend volunteers with Gatos de la Noche, https://www.gatosdelanoche.com/ (https://www.gatosdelanoche.com/) , and they do what I described above.

Great story about the mini-horse. Is that the same as a pony?
@Gefn
@Cyber Liberty
Well, instead of being lazy and asking others, I decided to do research into ponies vs. miniature horses and here is what I found:

There are differences in size, appearance, usage and lifespan.
Commuters delighted by group of golden retrievers waiting in line on train platform
Commuters were given paws for thought when they spotted a dozen golden retrievers lining up on their own — to wait for a train.
The adorable dogs, dubbed "good boys and girls" by witnesses, were spotted patiently waiting on the platform.
More than 30 thousand social media users shared a picture of the golden dogs waiting at Barnes Station, in southwest London, and posted hilarious puns about why they could be waiting. One called the scene a meeting of “Very Important Puppies,†while another branded it the “Andrex puppy reunion.†(Andrex, a brand of British toilet tissue, often features an "Andrex puppy" in its marketing campaigns.)

I love your name. This being the Thread of Cute, I uploaded a cute story by James Thurber, suitable for reading to your children, grandchildren, spouse, lover, friends, church. Don't read it alone, but aloud, preferably with kids present, with panache! Put some theater into it.
Only seven pages, and I SAID DON'T READ IT ALONE! I MEAN IT! Don't make me have to hunt you down.

This Burrito Joint Opened a Location Just for Squirrels
It's a relatively common business tactic: Find an untapped demographic and cater to that market directly. For instance, target flexitarians with Impossible Whoppers. Or target the sober with non-alcoholic drinks. Or target squirrels with burritos…. Wait, one of these things doesn't sound as lucrative as the others.
Courtesy of girlsgirlsgirls BURRITOS
Looking for a fresh way to market its business, Lexington, Kentucky-based Tex-Mex joint GirlsGirlsGirls Burritos—which opened in 2016 near the University of Kentucky—teamed up with the local advertising agency Cornett on an unusual stunt: It "opened" a "spinoff" on campus offering burritos for squirrels called, of course, SquirrelsSquirrelsSquirrels Burritos.

Thank you for sharing your little guy's story. Most people when they adopt a pet look for puppies or kittens and overlook the senior citizens. My second cat was an old girl. A stray left to fend for herself when her people cut her loose. She too was fearful of people and it looks like she suffered some abuse. When she showed up at my house, she was starving and flea ridden. Took her in, a friend of mine gave her a flea bath and then she went to the vet. The vet guessed her to be around 10 or more, but other than the fleas, she was in remarkably good health for a stray. Took her some time to trust me and she didn't like my other cat, but eventually, she adjusted. She had six good years with me before she passed and I believe she was grateful for every one of those years. When she was happy, she let out a purr you could hear in the next county.
May your baby give you many more years of happiness.

@Gefn
Thanks, y'all. He was so traumatized when I first got him after being surrendered by the only family he'd ever known since he was a puppy. All of a sudden at 12 years old he found himself in a little cage with barking dogs all around. I can't imagine how a dog's mind processes that. He hadn't even been neutered. I tried to get medical records on him, but the previous owner just said they took him to the vet in 2017 for flea protection. Whaaaaat?
Anyway, he's landed in a pot of jam since we became a family. He didn't eat at first and was simply shut down emotionally. I'm happy to tell y'all he's made a full recovery. He's a happy little dog, and I'm a happy little mama! He's energetic and loving and, although he was everything I didn't want in a poodle (male, older, blind in one eye, dark coat), I wouldn't change a thing!
We are dealing with a JRT foster right now. He was severely abused. First 2-3 days i had to "corner" him to get the leash to take him for a "drag" It took him almost a week to walk into the den or the bedroom, he kept hiding in the living room. Now he runs up to us to get petted when we walk in the door. He loves going for walks now and loose leash walks very well. He still acts like he expects to get hit when I put the leash on him, but is getting better. He will run the steps to the bed, but won't come on the bed yet. Small steps every day.
