Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced Thursday that the government will "no longer be granting any new offshore oil and gas exploration permits."

"This is another step on our transition away from fossil fuels and towards a carbon neutral economy," Ardern said in a speech.

The country's oil industry quickly voiced its anger over the move.

"The decision is a lose-lose for New Zealand's economy and environment, likely to threaten jobs and mean higher prices for consumers," said Cameron Madgwick, CEO of the Petroleum Exploration and Production Association of New Zealand.

"Because petroleum is produced to meet growing global demand, not exploring and producing in New Zealand simply means other countries will produce it instead and we will have to import it at higher cost," he said....

...However, she was quick to mention that current permits would be honoured. This means NZ Oil and Gas (NZOG) would still be able to prospect off the North Otago coast, near South Canterbury, in line with its current permit to explore the Barque Prospect. In a report commissioned by NZOG and released last November, Timaru was named the preferred base of possible extraction operations for the prospect....
I don't think I would want to invest capital here at this time.

The prime Minister is a radical leftist and past President of the International Union of Socialist Youth.

Socialists know that stopping hydrocarbon production will ensure the populace is more dependent upon the government, so this fits their objectives to control peoples' lives.

Oil is New Zealand’s largest source of energy and therefore has a strong influence on our {their} economy.

Well perhaps they need to pay more attention to who the elect.  I suspect its much like our situation, where they don't have any real choices at election time and the leftist controlled media tells them what to think.

To say the least.   Just wait till the Kiwis  find our that almost everything consumable and utility  has a  tie to a hydrocarbon based production, distribution, or transportation system.

Their life in the world of unicorns, skittles, and rainbows is in for quite a shock.  NZ basically has decided to go retro......  to about 1880.
