DC Rumor: Mitch McConnell Might Never Return to the Senate

According to the NY Times, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell had been under observation since suffering a concussion during a fall on Wednesday. He also has a “minor rib fracture,” his office said. He’s off to rehab and rumor has it that he might never return.
A spokesman, David Popp, said that the lawmaker’s “concussion recovery is proceeding well” and that Mr. McConnell, 81, had been discharged from George Washington University Hospital, where he was taken after the accident at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington about 9 p.m. Wednesday.
“At the advice of his physician,” Mr. Popp added in a statement, “the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home.”
D.C.. resident and radio host Chris Plante said on his radio show this morning that Mitch is in rehab and might never return to the Senate. That would be great news, but then, who replaces him?
We wish him good health and happiness, but not as a Senate leader.

If Fetterman can be a vegetable why can't Mitch be a potted plant? We learned last week that Senators don't push legislation...their staffs do.
-
Remember this is a rumor but like I said on another thread that this *concussion* seems more serious than they are saying...

True.
How many 81 year olds take nasty falls, and NOT break their hip?
Or.... did the concussion do some cognitive damage. One thing is for certain. Being a vegetable PA senator, is a much different animal that being the leader of the party, and having to get up to the podium and make sense.

Who would replace him?
-
If I'm reading right Thune is second in command for the GOP.
-
Who would replace him?
We could do a full thread on that alone.
For me? My preference? Cotton or Hawley
Realistically, it will be one of these 3 RINO's. (Thune, Barrasco, or Cornyn)

Yep, I think Thune would be up to bat....

Yes, but if he leaves the Senate, then we're down one Senator, who needs to be replaced. Is that replacement likely to be a Dem or a Rep? And who gets to do the replacing?

Crap, you are right. KY has a dim governor. Not sure how that plays out.......
In any case it will be the Minority leader though.

IMO Thomas Massie would step up to become the Jr. Senator from Kentucky. And a replacement for his district ould be voted on.
He's in a solid red area so there's no worry about a Dem taking the seat should massive decide to level up.

But he's surrounded by a veto proof sea of Red in the State Congress. Whoever he appoints won't last past the end of Turtle's current term.

But in the meantime, the democrats have even more control over the Senate.

One of two things will happen...McConnell will hang on long enough for a Republican to take over for Beshear after the election this year or find a way to string out his "rehab" until his term is up in 3 years.
Neither is unprecedented in the DC power circles.

One hopes that is what happens. However, given the GOP's tendency to wrench defeat from the jaws of victory, I could see McConnell retiring early and letting a Dem be appointed to replace him, quickly.

If Mitch does that then it's his last and biggest middle finger to the GOP and to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Of course; however, would you find it utterly out of character if he did that?

Good

Was he working out on Harry Reid's exercise equipment?

We should be so lucky.
Which RINO weasel will replace him?

Sad,but true. Keep an eye out for a RINO that announces his engagement/marriage to a Chinese woman who is half his age and WAAAY too attractive to actually be interested in him.

Even 5 years ago I would have considered that snide sarcasm.
Now I have to take it seriously.
