States Consider Charging Drivers by Mile to Maintain Nation’s Roads
Amy Furr 25 Jun 2023
States are scrambling to figure out how to keep making money to funnel into road maintenance amid economic struggles in President Joe Biden’s (D) America.
Officials have historically spent gas taxes on roadways, but “the problem that has developed is those taxes are generating less each year due to inflation, fuel efficiency and the rise of electric cars,” Fox Business reported Sunday.

Now, state officials are hoping to somehow replace those taxes, and charging drivers by the mile and not the gallon in the future is one among several proposals.
Others include taxing electricity via car charging stations and adding charges to door-to-door deliveries.
“The federal government is about to pilot its own program, funded by $125 million from President Biden’s infrastructure measure that he signed in November 2021,” the Fox report said.
“So far, only three states, Oregon, Utah and Virginia are generating revenue from road usage charges,” the outlet continued, noting Hawaii is set to join the states listed.

So the guy/gal delivering your stuff gets hit three ways from Sunday: Fuel taxes, added taxes, mileage charges (and likely lower tips, to boot!)
If the government spent as much figuring out how to save money as it does trying to figure out how to take more, we'd be running a balanced budget and paying down the National Debt.

Amen!
This administration needs to go or we will have absolutely nothing left. Nothing.
Next they will be putting a special meter on our electric and water meters to see how much we consume and tax us if we go over what they thing we should consume.

It seems they would have to force a tracking system on cars. With heavy fines if you are caught without one.

Congress and the governors of Red States need to get busy to pass bills to stop these fees, taxes, or regulations. Whatever you want to call them they are destructive and ALL because of this going green b.s.!

First of all, funding for state roads is already being created by charging fees for drivers licenses, traffic tickets, and who knows what else,so WHAT ARE THEY REALLY GOING TO SPEND THIS NEW MONEY ON?
We know it's not going to be spend on roads,so what is it going to be used for?

@bigheadfred
Not really. All they would have to do would be to set up toll booths are the entrances to all their highways.
Which would,of course, lead to them having to hire attendants to collect the money and make change. Then,of course, funds would have to be pulled from the roadway taxes to pay for the insurance and retirement funds for all the new "toll both hires",as well as to pay their salaries.
Which,of course would mean new state employees would have to be hired by the state to handle payroll taxes, retirement plans, health insurance, etc, etc, etc.
