A California man carrying at least one weapon near Brett M. Kavanaugh’s Maryland home has been taken into custody by police after telling officers he wanted to kill the Supreme Court justice, according to people familiar with the investigation.
The man, described to be in his mid-20s, was found to be carrying at least one weapon and burglary tools, these people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Police were apparently notified that the person might pose a threat to the justice, but it was not immediately clear who provided the initial tip, these people said. The man apparently did not make it on to Kavanaugh’s property in Montgomery County, but he was stopped on a nearby street, these people said.
Two people familiar with the investigation said the initial evidence indicates the man was angry about the leaked draft of an opinion by the Supreme Court signaling the court is preparing to overturn Roe. v. Wade, the 49-year-old decision that guaranteed the constitutional right to have an abortion. He was also angry over a recent spate of mass shootings, those people said.

A California resident has been charged with attempted murder after he told officials he wanted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, according to an unsealed arrest affidavit.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old California resident Nicholas John Roske, is set to appear in court Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Greenbelt, Md., after he was arrested earlier that day near Kavanaugh’s residence.
The Washington Post was the first to report the arrest.
The arrest affidavit said that Roske, who was allegedly holding a briefcase and backpack and was wearing black clothing, had been dropped off by a taxicab in front of Kavanaugh’s home earlier that morning, later walking away from his residence after seeing two Deputy U.S. Marshalls.
Roske was later detained by police after he called the Montgomery County Emergency Center in which he told the center that he had a firearm in his suitcase, was having suicidal thoughts and had intentions to kill Kavanaugh.
Officials found a slew of items from Roske’s backpack and suitcase, including a Glock 17 pistol with two magazines and ammunition, zip ties, a crow bar and pepper spray, among others.
Roske told a detective “that he was upset about the leak of a recent Supreme Court draft decision regarding the right to abortion as well as the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Roske indicated he believed the Justice that he intended to kill would side with Second Amendment decisions that would loosen gun control laws,” the affidavit reads.

An armed California man incensed about the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion expected to overturn Roe v. Wade was arrested near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Maryland home Wednesday after he hatched a plan to kill the jurist to “give his life purpose,” prosecutors said.
Nicholas John Roske, 26, was arrested by the Montgomery County Police Department at about 1:50 a.m. near Kavanaugh’s home in Chevy Chase and was charged later Wednesday in Maryland federal court with attempting to kill or kidnap a US judge, court records show.
Roske, who was dressed in black clothing and carrying a backpack and a suitcase, was spotted getting out of a cab in front of Kavanaugh’s home around 1:05 a.m. by two deputy US Marshals, who were stationed outside the residence, court papers state.
When he saw the marshals, who were standing next to their parked vehicle in the tony Washington, DC, suburb, he walked down the block and called 911 and told an operator he was having “suicidal thoughts,” had a firearm on him and wanted to kill Kavanaugh.
Cops from the Montgomery Police Department were dispatched to the area and when they arrived, Roske was still on the phone with the emergency operator, according to court records.

He believed Kavanaugh would loosen gun control laws and hatched a plan to kill the justice after finding his address online in an ill-fated bid to “give his life a purpose,” Roske allegedly told the agent.

Left-wing comedian Patton Oswalt cracked a joke about the recent threat to Brett Kavanaugh’s life, saying the Supreme Court justice should simply arm up his family, “problem solved.”
Patton Oswalt tweeted his ill-timed joke in response to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) call to pass a bill that would expand security for Supreme Court justices and their immediate families in the wake of left-wing protestors demonstrating in front of their homes in response to the high court’s forthcoming decision on Roe v. Wade.
“Just put one door on Kavanaugh’s house and arm his family,” Oswalt tweeted. “Problem solved.”
The comedian appeared to be referring to recommendations that schools should arm up and employ more police personnel to combat mass shootings.
Nicholas John Roske is the armed, zip-tie carrying suspect who is accused of threatening to kill U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Roske’s name was released via an unsealed arrest affidavit. Online records say Nicholas Roske, 26, is from Simi Valley, California. A LinkedIn page in the name of Nicholas Roske of Simi Valley says that he worked as an office manager at a pest control company.
A criminal complaint accuses Roske of “attempts to kidnap or murder, or threatens to assault, kidnap or murder a United States Judge, to wit: a current Justice of the United States Supreme Court.” It outlines a number of items he’s accused of bringing with him to Kavanaugh’s neighborhood, including duct tape, zip ties, and a pistol. The suspect also goes by the names Nicholas Roske and Nick Roske.
The arrest comes on the heels of a Wisconsin judge being zip-tied and murdered in his own home by a man he sentenced years before and escalating threats against members of the U.S. Supreme Court. Threats against the court have been a rising concern since the leak of a draft memo that indicated the court, including Kavanaugh, may overturn Roe v. Wade.
That leak drove Roske’s anger; in addition, he was angry because he thought Kavanaugh would help loosen gun control laws after mass shootings, the affidavit alleges.
Kavanaugh is a conservative justice nominated by former President Donald Trump. He was confirmed after a bruising nomination battle that included 35-year-old allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman while he was in high school. He denied those allegations.
Through a spokesman, President Joe Biden condemned the suspect’s actions “in the strongest terms,” according to Fox News, which added that the president is advocating for greater protection for courts and judges.

FBI agents raided the California home of Nicholas Roske, who has been charged with trying to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Federal officials Wednesday night converged on the Roske family’s one-story house in Simi Valley and busted down the front door after obtaining a search warrant.
Neighbors told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that the feds also were canvassing the area and asking questions about Roske.
