The state of Minnesota has paid employees nearly $270 million in overtime over the past three years, according to a new report.
The report, from the Minnesota Office of the Legislative Audit, also found that the state reimbursed about $100 million to employees for business expenses.
The report audited payments by the state departments with the largest overtime and expense payments.
by-agency“Overtime was often related to road construction projects, emergency weather and public safety situations, and human services and correctional facilities that operate 24 hours a day,” the audit said. About 30,000 of the state’s 52,000 employees are eligible for overtime.
The report found that some employees added more than $50,000 to their pay through overtime. It said that employees who voluntarily work vacation shifts and working on special projects can early large amounts of overtime.
The report, which did not “evaluate management practices regarding overtime use,” found that departments, generally, properly administered their payments to employees.
The Department of Transportation, however, did not always have supervisors with direct knowledge of employees’ work approving its employees’ overtime time sheets. In response, Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle will tighten its time sheet system...
