On a sillier note, this piece was originally by Paul Craft. Ray Stevens, however, made it his own. "It's Me Again, Margaret!"

I still prefer Martha & The Vandellas over Van Halen & The Box Tops over Joe Cocker...agree with Richard Berry's Louie Louie...

(I like Arlo, don't get me wrong, but this is one Willie polishes smooth as buttah)

Then there's this one. Originally by the Tempos, the Happenings made it infectiously catchy.

Now here's one that was so good that its original author, Neil Sedaka, re-recorded it in this guy's style and made it a hit.
Here's Lenny Welch's take on "Breaking Up is Hard to Do."

Tremeloes had a top 40 hit, very well known, with a song Cat Stevens wrote. I don't know who released the song on vinyl first but becoming acquainted with Stevens' version years after it was recorded I find they are both enjoyable.

There must be a lot of covers and originals and I just can't think of many others or I can think of them but they are somewhat obscure.

What is interesting is the story behind the song, "City of New Orleans", written by a Steve Goodman who suffered from leukemia his whole life I believe, dying at 36. The song is just amazing as well as the story behind the song... yet, most of us would not know who even wrote it.

Gordon Lightfoot wrote the great song, "In the early morning rain", maybe he was like John Denver (Leaving on a jet plane), they were songwriters before they were recording artists. Willie Nelson may fall into that category as well (Crazy Arms by Willie Nelson was sung by Patsy Cline, I think I have my history down, also 4 walls I think is written by Willie).

Recorded by many people including Lightfoot himself, Peter Paul and Mary and Gene Watson among others.

Maybelline - Johnny Rivers, of course, Chuck Berry originally, Rivers version is very good too.
Johnny B. Goode - many artists, Johnny Winter's is very good.

Yes, Steve Goodman, also the "good friend of" David Allan Coe's who penned "the perfect country and western song." I'll put that one in today's thread.

Well, at least you chose The Five Royals over The Mamas & The Papas (though a pretty good version too)

This one's a harder choice for me since the Kathy Young cover version got so much more airplay. Despite that I slightly favor the original by The Rivileers...

Chuck Berry wrote and performed it, good. Buddy Holly did the version many know and that's probably a classic. Waylon Jennings and many others have done "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" but Sir Paul McCartney gave it a Zydeco spin and to me, that's my favorite.

I enjoy seeing the videos at youtube of KY singing this one live and relatively recently but the Rivileers version is very good too.

I did like Robert Cray's cover of it in the Chuck Berry movie.

I'd only heard Berry's version.

Here's a fun one, a little known Australian group recorded the well known "Double Shot of My Baby's Love" (Swinging Medallions and they do a version with Springsteen on youtube, so apparently he likes it, that video is in one of the Carolinas by the way, he said he'd boycott NC which I disagree with but oh well).

Fun fact about the Cockroaches: two of their members, Anthony Field (lead singer) and Jeff Fatt (the drummer) had a bit more success with their next band...
...a little worldwide children's entertainment phenomenon known as The Wiggles.

Hurt, originally done by nine inch nails, covered by Johnny Cash

Tainted love -covered by Marilyn Manson
and I'm not going to post the link, it's got bare boobs in it, and it's not hard to find on you tube. Interesting fact, the guy Manson shoves out of the doorway is the current Captain America.

Money (That's what I want) The Babys did it best, Barrett Strong did it first. Many others including The Trashmen, Stones, Beatles, great White and Levon Helm did it well

The Youtube preview is disabled on this page and on Part I..... Try doing the youtube embedding and future posting on part III of this thread.
That is all.

Different tastes everyone has; the Canadian group (if I missed that in the other thread), The Band wrote "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" but I really like the Joan Baez version and she of course, had a hit with it.
One can look for them oneself.
