An Army base in Virginia has given the "all clear" signal following reports of an active shooter.

Fort Lee was briefly locked down after the reports.

The incident involved a single female soldier who turned the weapon on herself and fired one shot, injuring herself, according to a base spokeswoman.

The soldier was transported Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Her condition is not known at this time.

It remains unclear if there were any other injuries, the spokeswoman said.

“An active shooter has been reported on Fort Lee,” the base had announced earlier on its Twitter and Facebook pages. “All personnel should enact active shooter protocols immediately. The installation is being locked down until further notice.”

The incident was reported at the Combined Arms Support Command headquarters on base between 9:15 and 9:30 Monday morning, a spokesman at the base told The Hill.

About a half hour later, the base's installation operations center gave the all clear message, though the command's four-story building remained on lockdown as military police inspected the scene.

An active shooter is an "individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area," according to the Homeland Security Department.

Fort Lee leadership will hold a press conference about the incident this morning, according to a Pentagon spokeswoman.

A female turning the gun on herself?  Sounds like a love triangle to me.

NBC News (http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/sergeant-shoots-herself-fort-lee-virginia-flown-hospital-n188331):

An Army sergeant barricaded herself in an office and shot herself Monday at Fort Lee in Virginia, authorities said. The soldier, a sergeant first class with 14 years in the Army, was flown to a hospital, where her condition was unknown.

The base, south of Richmond, was briefly locked down after a report of a shooter on the post. Maj. Gen. Stephen Lyons, head of the Army’s Combined Arms Support Command, a training operation, said that the sergeant turned the gun on herself after negotiations with soldiers. He said that the gun was not a service weapon.

The Army did not release the sergeant’s name. Lyons said that she had been deployed to Iraq in 2007 for a personnel job. He said it was not clear what led the sergeant to shoot herself. “We are sad for our soldier in arms that she faced those kinds of challenges and she thought she had to resort to those kinds of actions,” he told reporters. “At the same time we’re grateful because the situation could have been worse.”

An Army female non-commissioned officer carrying a loaded weapon walked into a command building at Fort Lee, Va., early Monday, and then shot and killed herself, base and Pentagon officials said.

The NCO, whose rank was not immediately given out, was taken to Virginia Commonwealth University medical center where she later died, according to multiple media reports.

There were no other injuries in the incident. The base lifted the lockdown and declared an "all clear" after about 50 minutes, officials said. The type of weapon used by the soldier was not immediately identified.

The Army's Criminal Investigation Command was investigating the incident that began at about 9 a.m. at the base about 25 miles south of Richmond when the female NCO entered a four-story building that is the headquarters of the Army's Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) – Building 5020,  Army and Pentagon officials said.

"Active Shooter Protocols" were issued to base personnel to stay in place as first responders came to the scene on the report of a "female soldier with a gun inside CASCOM," the officials said.

"Early reports indicate the soldier turned the weapon on herself and fired one shot, injuring herself," Fort Lee officials said.

Pentagon officials said there were no immediate indications on what may have been the female soldier's motivation in the incident.

Fort Lee is the third-largest training site in the Army with a daily population of about 34,000, including service members from all branches, their families, civilians and contractors.

CASCOM is a major subordinate command of the Training and Doctrine Command. CASCOM trains more than 150,000 troops annually through courses taught by the Ordnance, Quartermaster and Transportation schools.
