The University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts announced Friday that it will remove its exhibit of Hollywood legend John Wayne, citing an initiative to promote “anti-racist cultural values†following protests from students.
“Conversations about systemic racism in our cultural institutions along with the recent global, civil uprising by the Black Lives Matter Movement require that we consider the role our school can play as a change maker in promoting antiracist cultural values and experiences,†Evan Hughes, the assistant dean of diversity and inclusion, said in a statement. “Therefore, it has been decided that the Wayne Exhibit will be removed.â€

Limbo was the entry hall for Dante's Inferno; USC is an entry hall for Hollyweird.
-
"John Wayne"?
Who is that, some old cracka? Nobody wants to hear about white people. White people are sooo "1950's". They should just be killed off so de bruthas can have all their stuff.
-
Not a wise move.
Any above 40 remember him as a hero and an avid American.
Erase him and you erase a great memory we have of him and that will not sit well on true Americans,
-
Unbelievable!!! Very sad. I love John Wayne movies. He made westerns for decades which depicted how the Ole West was settled. He is/was party of Hollywood history; back when movies were worth watching.
-
What next, rescind the degree he earned?
-

USC has been among the top cinema schools in the world.
The problem is not USC, or cinema.
It is handing over to children, the governance of institutions.
The administrations of these schools, abdicate their responsibilities.
Study Evergreen U. in Washington State.

Absolutely! After watching Grit, the western channel, my granddaughter (age 10) fell in love with John Wayne movies. She'll watch color or black and white. She dressed as John Wayne on Halloween. Send anything John Wayne to Texas. We'll take him !

So is any Western made. say before 1968, subject to SJW destruction?
Or any non-PC movie for that matter.
Maybe the greatest comedic performance of the past 25 years (IMO) was Robert Downey Jr.'s in Tropic Thunder.
What's the odds of that ever being portrayed like that again, or will the SJW pukes erase his performance out?

How about Blazing Saddles?
Never be made today.

@catfish1957
Give it time. It's on the "Top Ten List of Things to Do" once the comrades take over.

"John Wayne"
Wasn't he famous for his brand of toilet paper?

Infamous for THAT brand of toilet paper!

Next on their list will be Jimmy Stewart. The guy who was a strong conservative, Led bombing raids in Europe, Air Force Reserve General, and overall decent human being. Just doesn't fit the new Hollywood, BLM, and Antifa model.
Harvey, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and It's a Wonderful Life are now on life support.

IIRC,he also went back on AD during the VN war,and flew a few bombing missions there, too.
Don't know about the Korean War,but I would be surprised if he missed it.

He's a great American, and in the entertainement industry one that I hold in the highest esteem.

Yeah, it was rough an' tough an' didn't take crap off anybody.
I like Grit TV. On July 19 they are having another one of their John Wayne marathons. Definitely gonna watch.

So, the lesson learned is, if you are not 100% perfect, 100% of the time, you are worthless?
Great confidence builder for young people....

I remember back when ‘old things’ we’re thought to be so wonderful that they were put on display in grand buildings, museums...back when there were museums; but I am getting ahead of today’s events.
Movies absolutely must be preserved as vivid recordings of human events. They are valuable old things showing who we were and what we cared about in the times in which we lived. It would be a shame if the great westerns were lost in the hurry to rewrite history.

Best movie ever: The Quiet man. Top Three westerns: Mcclintock, The Cowboys, Big Jake.

@verga,all
It's not a movie, but the series "Lonesome Dove" is hard to beat. If you have never seen it,I can't recommend it too highly. Maybe the best thing I have ever seen, based on story-telling and acting.

Centennial was a good yarn, too.
-
I know I'm probably alone in this but I thought "Open Range" was great and so was "Dances with Wolves".

Open range is a great movie in the vein of the classic western. And Robert Duvall is one of the best actors alive.
Dances, too long.
But Unforgiven and Shane tie for best western. True Grit honorable mention.
-

You're not alone. Liked them both. Also liked Silverado (again with Kevin Costner), but it was much lighter than a standard western.
There's one from the 70s called "My Name is Nobody" with Henry Fonda. Great movie.

-
Another fairly recent one (1995) that I have probably watched two dozen times is "The Quick and the Dead" with Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Sinise, and Keith David.
-
Hell Fighters.....my favorite John Wayne movie.
Jim Hutton did a great job in this one as well.

I've seen "Dances with Wolves" several times. One of my favorite movies!

Westerns and WWII movies are my favorites but I must confess to having a very hard sitting through the first 20 minutes of "Saving Private Ryan". And the ending had me reaching for my hankie as well.

As rough as that was, it was likely much worse on the beach.
I remember a guy after a car accident I ran that beach scene reminded me of, and that was a bit rough.

Use to li ve across the street from a guy that was there. One of the experiences that he refused to talk about. The only thing he ever said was that he was there.
-

There is no doubt about it. Three of my mother's brothers went across that beach. Only one of them on D-Day and, strangely enough, he was the only one of the three to make it all the way to Berlin. The others were medevacked out and recovered from their wounds.

John Wayne made a few great movies but his biggest contribution, aside from being an unabashed Patriot, is that he made a ton of movies that were just flat out entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Movies like Donovan's Reef, Hatari, The War Wagon, The Undefeated, Rio Lobo and the interchangeable El Dorado, Big Jake on the light entertainment end as well as the dramatic war movies and others. John Wayne movies make maybe the largest single artists portion of my movie collection and I have hundreds.
Did he make some stinkers, oh yeah..........The Conquerer, Brannigan and McQ made rotten fish smell good.
I recently watched many interviews on YouTube with actors and others that worked with Wayne for years on many movies and aside from the extreme liberals like Kirk Douglas they all had universal respect for Wayne and especially his patriotism. What USC is doing is disgusting and if the Wayne family was still paying money into an endowment I would hope they tell USC where to stick it next time they come around with their hand out.

John Wayne brings to mind a lot of memories for me; my Dad and I used to watch movies together on Saturday afternoons. We'd snuggle up with a bowl of cheese popcorn and watch tv -- John Wayne was my favorite.
-

@GtHawk
IIRC,Kirk's family were Russian Jewish immigrants, and he was either a small child when they came here,or was born here right after they came.
These people seemed to have primarily been Communists of a different flavor than the Communists that won the Revolution, and they had to run for their lives with most of them only being able to escape with the clothes on their backs.
Almost everyone of them I have ever read or heard about were still Communists and only fled Russia because the brand of Communists that took over from the Czar "weren't doing it right". They and their children were mentioned prominently on McCarthy's List.
-
McClintock! Is one of my favorites.
I love that one. Donavan's Reef is good too.

While they are at it, I'd bet there are a ton of places here in Texas that would love to add that exhibit to their museum.
-
IMHO the best John Wayne movie is "The Searchers".

Picking a John Wayne Movie, is like picking an ice creme flavor, when there is 50 choices.
I got to go with Liberty Valance. Seeing John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Lee Marvin all standing within a few feet of each other in a scene is cinematic magic. he he he.... I guess Van Cleef is the piker in this scene.

I reckon that "Liberty Valence" is my favorite John Wayne film.
And don't forget "Big Jim McClain" with Mr. Wayne playing a commie-fighter...

Just like Jim's first name went away from Twain....
-
I bet USC still exhibits O.J. Simpson's football history though while they dish on John Wayne.
May they never win another football game.
-
John Wayne's comments in his magazine interview took place about the same time Jimmy Carter was running his blatantly racist campaign for Georgia Governor. Haven't heard anyone yet calling for the removal of Carter's statue in Atlanta.

I have two books in my library that can teach great life lessons. One is Everything I Needed To Know I Learned From John Wayne. A good reference book on how to live. The other one is The Official John Wayne Handy Book For Men. It tells you how to do a lot of things like camping, hunting, driving, you know, what real men should know how to do. They are both great reads.

Aah, but the woke generation would simply tell you and John Wayne that you were both locked, as were so many of your generation, in masculine primacy.
So rather than manning up, you should simply lose your pair, like so many eunuchs of the woke generation have.

Well, who ELSE can they get to hold it?
Other than each other, that is,and chances are they would even have to pay top dollar for a "handy" from each other.

John's family should ask for the material that made up the exhibit as no doubt
it was donated to them.
