An Alaska Airlines flight turned into a nightmare when a section of the plane blew out mid-flight, reportedly sucking out passengers’ belongings and forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Portland.

The Ontario, California-bound plane departed Portland International Airport at 4:52 p.m. Friday but returned just 35 minutes later following the terrifying ordeal, according to data from flight tracking website Flight Aware.

Shortly after takeoff, the flight, which had 171 passengers and 6 crew members aboard, “experienced an incident,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement, without divulging further.

Passengers described the chaos as people’s cell phones and belongings were sucked out of the gaping hole in the plane.

One passenger told KPTV that a child had to be held down in his seat by his mother.

Not a window.   This is a plugged exit door not used by US carriers. The plug is installed by Spirit Aerosystems in Wichita who build the fuselage for Boeing. Not the first serious escapement from Spirit over the last year that Boeing had to deal with.  Ryanair and a few other international carriers are the only ones that have the extra door installed. The inspection shouldn't take long. Hopefully it's just the one airplane.
Spirit better get it's act together, especially now that their CEO was replaced with a former Boeing executive. Every time Boeing is ready to ramp up production Rates, Spirit does something that causes a slide.

Must have been horrifying for the passengers, especially the child who lost his shirt...I would bet that's not all the kid lost and they will probably need some therapy, maybe mom too.

Thank God, it was only his shirt

It might be just me, but does there seem to be an uptick in airplane and airline incidents?

FAA grounds more than 170 Boeing 737 Max 9s after Alaska Airlines panel blows out
CNBC, Jan 6, 2024

The Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday ordered airlines to ground more than 170 Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft for inspections, a day after after a panel on one blew out in the middle of an Alaska Airlines flight.

The emergency airworthiness directive will affect about 171 planes worldwide and applies to U.S. airlines and carriers operating in U.S. territory.

[...]

"Safety will continue to drive our decision-making as we assist the NTSB’s investigation into Alaska Airlines Flight 1282,” FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker said in a statement.

Alaska Airlines overnight said it would ground its fleet of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes. Alaska said on Saturday morning, local time, that it had completed inspections on more than a quarter of its 737 Max 9 fleet “with no concerning findings.”

"Aircraft will return to service as their inspections are completed with our full confidence,” the Seattle-based airline said.

Boeing suffers another setback with Alaska Airlines emergency landing
CNN Business, Jan 6, 2024

Boeing faces scrutiny over the safety of its aircrafts after an Alaska Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing Friday when a panel and window blew out.

Although it’s unclear what or who was to blame for the incident, engineering and quality problems have plagued Boeing in recent years. The aircraft maker has seen a string of incidents that have results in tragedies, groundings and ongoing worries about safety.

Perhaps the most notable incident, in 2019, all 737 Max planes were grounded across dozens of countries following crashes of two of of its jets — one in Ethiopia and one near Indonesia — that killed all 346 people on board. It was determined a design flaw in the plane was a major cause of the crashes.

Boeing has encountered a slew of other problems in recent years and as recently as December when the FAA urged airlines to inspect all 737 Max planes in their fleets after the discovery of missing bolts in two planes’ rudder control systems.

In April, Boeing said it discovered a manufacturing issue with some 737 Max aircraft after a supplier used a “non-standard manufacturing process” during the installation of two fittings in the rear fuselage – although Boeing insisted the problem did not constitute a safety risk.

The Max has also faced numerous notices for additional inspections since it returned to service in 2020. Boeing says that’s a result of its increased focus on safety.

And problems have not been limited to the Max: Boeing has faced massive operating losses in all but one quarter since 2019. It was forced to halt deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner widebody jet because of quality control problems. Though the Dreamliner was not grounded like the Max, it still hurt the company’s bottom line.

United Airlines discovers loose bolts on its Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes after Alaska Airlines incident
United's Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes are not currently in use

By Andrea Vacchiano , Grady Trimble FOXBusiness

United Airlines announced Monday that it found loose bolts on its Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes, days after an Alaska Airlines plane of the same model lost a door plug mid-air.

In a statement obtained by FOX Business, United explained that its Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft will be suspended. The airline's 200 MAX 9 flights are also canceled.

"Since we began preliminary inspections on Saturday, we have found instances that appear to relate to installation issues in the door plug – for example, bolts that needed additional tightening," the company explained. "These findings will be remedied by our Tech Ops team to safely return the aircraft to service."

United said that it is still waiting for final approval from the Federal Aviation Administration on the inspection process.

IPhone Survives 16,000-Foot Fall, Helps Steer Jet-Panel Hunt

Kate Duffy  •  10h

(Bloomberg) -- Among the harrowing details of the blown-off fuselage panel that triggered a sudden decompression event on Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, one revelation seemed to defy the laws of physics: one of the mobile phones that had been sucked out of the Boeing Co. 737 Max 9 jet’s cabin remained in functioning condition after a 16,000-foot tumble.

A new-generation Apple Inc. iPhone landed intact, unlocked and with hours of battery life remaining on a Portland, Oregon roadside, according to a post on X by a user calling himself Seanathan Bates, who said he discovered the device. The screen showed an email from Alaska Airlines about a baggage claim for the flight, based on Bates’ photos.

The phone was in airplane mode, Bates said in a TikTok video. “It was still pretty clean, no scratches on it, sitting under a bush and it didn’t have a screenlock on it,” he said.  .  .

Black box recorder from imperiled Alaska Airlines flight completely erased: ‘we have nothing’

New York Post (https://nypost.com/2024/01/08/news/black-box-recorder-from-imperiled-alaska-airlines-flight-completely-erased-we-have-nothing/)

Investigators seeking answers about what caused an Alaska Airlines plane’s near-catastrophic midflight blowout on Jan. 5 are working without a key piece of evidence: audio from the flight’s black box cockpit voice recorder.

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said at a press conference the in-flight audio of Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, which was carrying 171 passengers, had been lost amid the chaos of making an emergency landing at Portland International Airport in Oregon 35 minutes into its journey.

“The cockpit voice recorder was completely overwritten. There was nothing on the cockpit voice recorder,” Homendy told reporters. ...

So, I flew 737s for 15 years at Delta. The only way to erase the flight data recorder is to interrupt the power source. I mean, it’s possible, I guess, with shit flying around the cockpit and donning oxygen a breaker could be pulled inadvertently, but this sounds really suspect. Any other 737 guys/girls want to opine?

How many hours on the plane? The engine? FOD or bird strike? Turbine blade failure? There are lots of things that can cause an engine failure, and the 747 was designed to fly with only two engines operational, and can stay airborne for a while on just one.

Also, it's a cargo plane.

IAM District 751 Latest News

Update: “We are eagerly awaiting the completion of the NTSB investigation and the release of its findings. The safety and quality of the manufacturing infrastructure are paramount in every task our members undertake at The Boeing Company. Recognizing this, IAM District 751 actively engaged in a recent tri-party agreement involving our Union, Boeing, and the FAA to address membership concerns related to manufacturing processes, airworthiness, and other related matters. Through this partnership, the agreement allows all parties to identify and investigate issues with full transparency. Our members are resolute in their dedication to maintaining quality inspections and strengthening the manufacturing and quality processes, ensuring that the production process reaches the highest standards of safety possible." -IAM District 751 President and Directing Business Representative Jon Holden

Alaska Airlines Plane Appears to Have Left Boeing Factory Without Critical Bolts
Regulators put limits on Boeing 737 MAX production; grounded MAX 9 jets have resumed flying after required inspections

By Andrew Tangel

Bolts needed to secure part of an Alaska Airlines jet that blew off in midair appear to have been missing when the plane left Boeing’s BA -0.14%decrease; red down pointing triangle

factory.

Boeing and other industry officials increasingly believe the plane maker’s employees failed to put back the bolts when they reinstalled a 737 MAX 9 plug door after opening or removing it during production, according to people familiar with the matter.

The increasingly likely scenario, according to some of these people, is based partly on an apparent absence of markings on the Alaska door plug itself that would suggest bolts were in place when it blew off the jet around 16,000 feet over Oregon on Jan. 5.

They also pointed to paperwork and process lapses at Boeing’s Renton, Wash., factory related to the company’s work on the plug door.

Key bolts were missing from a Boeing door plug that blew out in mid-air, report says

By Pete Muntean, Gregory Wallace and Chris Isidore, CNN

Updated 3:45 PM EST, Tue February 6, 2024

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday said evidence shows four bolts that hold the door plug in place on the Boeing 737 Max 9 were missing at the time of last month’s blowout on Alaska Airlines flight 1282.

The bombshell new finding from federal investigators comes one month and a day after the January 5 incident that triggered a 19-day emergency grounding of all Max 9s, and re-ignited scrutiny of Boeing following the fatal Max 8 crashes of 2018 and 2019.

Boeing acknowledged its responsibility for the blowout in a statement issued after the NTSB report and said it is working to make sure incidents like this do not reoccur.

“Whatever final conclusions are reached, Boeing is accountable for what happened,” said Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun in a statement. “An event like this must not happen on an airplane that leaves our factory. We simply must do better for our customers and their passengers.”

Boeing said it was taking new actions to improve the way it makes the 737 Max 9 planes. That includes more inspections, giving the 737 teams more time “to focus on and implement quality improvements,” and bringing in outside safety experts to assess its operations.
