Dem Michigan sen candidate Abdul El-Sayed says tax forms are ‘complicated,' requests to delay financial disclosures until after primary

"My wife and her family own property abroad, so getting all those tax forms is a thing."

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed defended his decision to delay filing his financial disclosure forms, arguing that the process was “complicated” due to his wife’s family owning overseas assets.

El-Sayed has been under fire from his Democratic primary opponent, Representative Haley Stevens, after he requested an extension to file his 2026 financial disclosures until after the Senate primary. Stevens has argued that voters should have access to the information in the disclosure before choosing a candidate.

Speaking with journalist Mehdi Hasan, El-Sayed dismissed the criticism, saying the delay stemmed from complicated tax documents.

“My wife and her family own property abroad, so getting all those tax forms is a thing,” he said.

He also responded to criticism by Stevens of him being a millionaire, saying, “Well, if, if you take my assets and her, my, my wife's assets together, then I guess they add up to something like that.”

1.) You should be paying your taxes anyway, so, those forms should have been filled out by April 15th.
2.) You knew the requirements to run for office when you filed the forms to run for office and appear on the ballot.
3.) What are you hiding?  What are your wife's family's business dealings?  And, with whom do they do business?  Are you and your wife laundering illegal foreign campaign contributions via your wife's family's "business dealings"?

Since Abdul refuses to show voters what’s really in his tax return and personal finances, I have some questions.

Abdul and his wife made $686,000 in 2025. That’s a quarter of a million dollars more than they made the year before—he literally got richer while running for office. Who’s putting that money in his pocket?

He reported $262,000 in capital gains — more than 4 times what the average Michigander EARNS in a year. Where did this profit come from?

Abdul reported nearly $300,000 in ‘other’ income, but won’t tell voters what it was. Is that for paid speeches? Bogus health products he hawked on his podcast? Stocks he owns?

Abdul reported "sale of a property" – what kind of property? Where is it? What did it sell for? Did his father-in-law buy it while he’s also funding his personal super PAC? Or someone else?

Influential Detroit pastor and radio host Horace Sheffield III enthusiastically endorsed Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed during a radio interview last week, urging listeners to make "5 and 10 phone calls" to help propel the left-wing Democrat to victory. Unmentioned in the glowing interview was that El-Sayed's campaign has paid tens of thousands of dollars to Sheffield's nonprofit organization.

El-Sayed's campaign has paid $75,000 to Ecumenical Ministers Alliance, a nonprofit that Sheffield incorporated in 2010, for "political consulting," according to campaign finance disclosures. The campaign has made 10 payments of $7,500 to the nonprofit from Oct. 21 to June 1, records show.

Sheffield was suspended from his previous radio station in 2018 after he endorsed the failed gubernatorial candidate Rep. Shri Thanedar (D., Mich.), who'd paid his nonprofit tens of thousands of dollars, also for "consulting."

Last week's radio interview is at least the third time Sheffield, the pastor of New Destiny Christian Fellowship, has boosted El-Sayed on his radio show or in social media posts, all without disclosing the financial relationship. The pastor's endorsements are especially helpful to El-Sayed, who badly trails his primary opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens, in support from black voters. ...

Of course, this is in addition to abolishing ICE, effectively destroying the Supreme Court, wealth taxes, releasing criminals, and, of course, his continued embrace of virulent anti-Semite Hasan Piker.
