Two Federal Employees Arrested for Smuggling Deadly Pathogen into America from Congo Outbreak Zone

Two federal researchers working at one of America’s highest-security virus laboratories have been arrested and charged with allegedly conspiring to smuggle monkeypox samples into the United States following a trip to the Republic of the Congo, federal authorities announced.

Vincent Munster, 53, a Dutch citizen who serves as chief of the Virus Ecology Section at the National Institutes of Health’s Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Montana, and Claude Kwe, 38, a Cameroonian citizen and research fellow in the same division, have been charged with conspiracy to smuggle monkeypox into the United States and making false statements to federal investigators.

Both men work in a Biosafety Level 4 laboratory, the highest level of biological containment, where researchers study some of the world’s most dangerous pathogens.
