UPDATE: Sudanese woman sentenced to hang for leaving the Islamic faith
BY ASHE SCHOW | MAY 15, 2014 AT 1:07 PM

Twenty-seven-year old pregnant woman Meriam Ibrahim has been sentenced to death for reportedly leaving the Islamic faith, even though she was raised Christian and never practiced Islam.

Under Sudanese law, anyone born in Sudan is Muslim, and even though Ibrahim’s father was Muslim, he wasn’t a part of her life. Her mother raised her in a Christian household.

Ibrahim could have avoided the death penalty had she renounced her Christian faith and “return[ed] to Islam,” but she wouldn’t.

Ibrahim was also sentenced to 100 lashes for committing adultery – because her marriage to a Christian man was not valid under the law.

Amnesty International UK called the sentence “appalling and abhorrent,” saying that leaving the Islamic faith and adultery “should not be considered crimes at all.”

Ibrahim will be given the lashes after she has given birth and recovered. Local media report the hanging will not happen for two years after she has given birth.

Fixed the title.  "Sudanese" was missing the "S".

Is that the Sharia law that's currently being forced on the UK and Australia (and probably coming to a country near you)?
