2028 Primary: Gavin Newsom to Test Presidential Waters in Rural South Carolina
Joel B. Pollak 4 Jul 2025
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is wasting no time in testing the waters for a presidential run in 2028, planning a visit next week to rural South Carolina, hoping to find a warm reception among poor, black voters.
The South Carolina Democratic Party said that Newsom will focus on meeting Tuesday and Wednesday with rural voters in eight of the “the most economically challenged and environmentally vulnerable” counties.
Newsom’s theme will be a shared experience of natural disasters — though he has proven inept at managing them in his own state, whether leaving the country during blizzards or failing to provide water during fires.
Politico reported Thursday:
The South Carolina Democratic Party — which announced the trip Thursday — is marketing the series of meet-and-greets as an opportunity for the governor to meet with communities impacted by natural disasters and “speak to the urgent need for federal support and investment” in the wake of Hurricane Helene and the Los Angeles wildfires.
Newsom traveled to the state in January 2024 to stump for former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in the run-up to the presidential election. He received a lukewarm reception from some voters skeptical of his liberal reputation, POLITICO reported at the time.

not surprised at all, I have thought that Gavin would be their nominee in 2028 for quite awhile - he doesn't want to shut up, but he's a lame duck and there's nowhere else for him to go. He'll probably be the choice of the establishment, so he'll win the nomination.
Looks a little cray cray to have another nominee out of California, but who else? Tim Walz, AOC, maybe Gretchen Witless? Gavin would have any of them for breakfast, and Biden, Sanders and Pocahontas could all be dead by then.
Smokin Joe:
Well, he does have an incomparable track record when it comes to wrecking a State replete with resources.
He has a true talent for turning mere SNAFU into FUBAR.
And he has demonstrated his ability to double down on piss poor policy to the detriment of all but a very few of his constituents.
Coupled with his ability to tell others to do one thing and ignore those rules for himself, I think he'd be a true representative of the Democrat Party.
And I hope he loses.

I can't imagine what poor black SC voters would see in Newsome, so I imagine that he'll plant a few ringers from California at his various stops to cheer him on.
With that said, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will be the obvious one to watch in 2028, despite his obvious antisemite problem within the Democrat party. He's "moderate" enough that he could win.
