Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has a nearly 40-point lead over his primary challenger, Matt Bevin, in a new Republican survey of the Kentucky Senate GOP primary.
The survey, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the pro-McConnell group Kentuckians for Strong Leadership, gives McConnell 61 percent support to Bevin’s 23 percent support.
That’s an increase in support from an early-February independent survey of the race, which showed McConnell ahead by only 26 points. But it’s actually a decrease from the last GOP survey of the race, conducted by Wenzel Strategies at the start of February, which gave him a 42-point lead.
It’s likely McConnell’s primary lead is somewhere between those two numbers — significant double-digits, still a favorable position just over two months out from Election Day.
The polling memo also notes McConnell maintains a 33-point lead over Bevin even among voters who say they’ve heard of the GOP challenger, an indication that, even if Bevin manages to increase his profile in the state, he’ll find it difficult to break ahead.
McConnell's persistently high unpopularity has given Democrats reason to believe he's one of the GOP's most vulnerable senators this cycle, but the new survey gives McConnell a surprisingly high approval rating among GOP primary voters, with 67 percent approving of his job performance, while just 25 percent view him unfavorably.
Bevin, in contrast, is seen favorably by just 21 percent of primary voters and unfavorably by 15 percent.
McConnell has sparked the ire of conservatives throughout his career but that frustration ran particularly high last month, when he was one of a handful of Republican senators to vote to raise the debt limit.
The fallout from the move was on display last week when McConnell received a lukewarm reception from activists at the Conservative Political Action Conference just outside of Washington, D.C.
But this survey, which was conducted Feb, 24-26, about 10 days after the vote, seems to indicate he still retains some good will with Republicans.
The survey was conducted among 400 likely Republican primary voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
McConnell is favored in his primary, and expected to encounter Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in the general election in Kentucky.

"DEWEY WINS!", right?
One can get any poll results that one wants for the right price. I don't put a lot of stock in polls.

Indeed. Keep in mind:
The survey, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the pro-McConnell group Kentuckians for Strong Leadership, gives McConnell 61 percent support to Bevin’s 23 percent support.
This was a paid poll. McConnell is risking looking like Rick Lazio at this rate. All the polls had him way ahead in his primary, too.
-
I wonder if a certain person that shall remain nameless, will be along shortly to say these polls don't count because they are wrong. :silly:

If McConnell were doing this well he would not have gone on the CPAC stage with a gun.

Hmm. Public Opinion Strategies. POS.
Coincidence? You be the judge.

Very good point!

Like I said on another thread, I have not seen a single sign supporting Mitch McConnell in my part of the state. However, I have seen numerous signs saying "Ditch Mitch" and signs supporting Matt Bevin.

Just want to let you know that we're all pulling for Kentucky to DITCH MITCH, down here in TEXAS!
Don't let up for anything!

McConnell is favored in his primary, and expected to encounter Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes in the general election in Kentucky.
How weak/strong would McConnell be against proto-fascist, I mean democrat, Grimes? That's all that really matters. I don't particularly approve of Mr. McConnell, but I would certainly prefer him to any democrat, period.
-
Dream the dream conservatives. Bevin can't win the primary so you get McConnell or Grimes. Real conservatives choose rat.

She's pretty weak. Bill Clinton is supposed to stump for her in the state. I'm sure she doesn't want Obama anywhere near her because he is HATED here because he is destroying coal jobs. I expect the DNC to spend a lot of money to help her - they would love to get that senate seat. Mitch is Kentucky's Robert Byrd - they'll still wheel him out on the floor long after he's dead.

Yeah. These guys that make their LIVING doing polls are way off, they don't know what they're doing.
McConnell is going to beat Bevin by a huge margin and he'll beat that nutty Grimes too. He ALWAYS has these near-death experiences and survives them all.
-

As between McConnell and a crypto-fascist, I'll take McConnell. As between a crypto-fascist and a card-carrying member of the USA Democrat Party, I'll take the crypto-fascist.
-
What are McConnell's odds against Grimes?
He has a 67% job approval rating. What do you think?
Grimes is running away from every Democrat position she can, going to gun ranges so she can be photographed with a rifle.
Plus, there's a Republican wave developing, and not a single Republican will lose in a Senate race.

I don't have the context to think one way or the other, that's why I'm asking. Past performance is no guarantee of future performance; I'm more interested in current polling and the take on the situation by those more familiar with it.
-
What are McConnell's odds against Grimes?
According to http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/latest_polls/senate/#
Latest poll has McConnell up 1 over Grimes. But McConnell is busy dragging Bevin through the mud now. In a couple months he'll do the same to Grimes.

McConnell is 72; Reagan was nearly 70 when he STARTED his 8 year term.

The "real" polls show Mitch losing to her and Bevins defeating her.

Not the polls commissioned by Mitch McConnell.

Not the polls commissioned by Mitch McConnell.
So polls by the DNC machine would count as "real" then?

The "real" polls show Mitch losing to her and Bevins defeating her.
So now we're down to "real polls" (the ones that agree with me) and "fake polls" (the ones that don't agree with me).
This is going to be a wave election. McConnell will win, any Republican candidate will beat Sam Nunn's daughter in Georgia, and the GOP will pick up eight seats in the Senate.

I would suggest getting behind Mr. Bevin. McConnell has already demonstrated beyond a doubt that he is not worth of staying in the Senate. now is the perfect time to TERM LIMIT him and send him into retirement.
-
what, pray tell, are "'real' polls"?
The ones the public never see!
All, and I do mean ALL, of the rest of them aren't worth the paper they are printed on! Most of them are designed to INFLUENCE opinions rather than measure them!
Within a few days of the actual election the public consumption polls will begin to become more accurate but not until then.

You sound just like those people that were telling us that TED CRUZ couldn't possibly beat 12 year Incumbent, Lt. Governor David Dewhurst ($25 Million War Chest) just 18 months ago. :tongue2:

From your lips to God's ear.
From your comment, I would think that you are supporting the Turtle, Mitch McConnell. Or am I misreading your intent?

-

It is about 50/50 here those who want no change and those who do... but the one person who actually lives in KY - wants Mitch gone and frankly she is the one who counts IMHO... I'm in the get rid of all the old farts crowd.

Okay, I'll bite. He's an Old Fart! Since I'm 62, I can say that! RAH!
-
I would wager none of the anti-Bevin crowd has ever bothered to listen to the man. He would make KY proud.
-
LOL! Being new here you have no way of knowing how very true that is!
Can I claim to have a clue?

What ever happened to all these people that are always screaming about TERM LIMITS?? They are more vexing than a teen-age girl with all of their vacillating! :chairbang:

Doesn't matter if someone is new or not new.... we all have our opinions - you of all people know that.

WOWSERS!! I like that! (I'm NOT a "SIR" though. I worked for a living).
-
Can I claim to have a clue?
This :taz: reflects a certain person here I shall leave it to you to decipher who.
-
He was FOR TARP before he was against it.
YOU were for TARP.............. McCONNELL was for TARP............. BUSH was for TARP.......... at least Bevin has run a business, more than can ever be said for Mitch McConnell.
-
Been there, done that, got the Tee shirt!
How many other TEXANS we got running around here? Looks like we might need to attack Mexico.....

They are the majority here... or seems like they are ~LOL~

New people can't be smartasses? I didn't read that in the rules or I'd be banned by now. :silly:
-
I would wager none of the anti-Bevin crowd has ever bothered to listen to the man. He would make KY proud.
From what I've heard, he would make America Proud! More than I can say for more than half of the Senate "republicans" (small "r" intentional).
-

This site is not FR and we don't do "newbie" here......... some forget that.

Anybody who is sane was FOR TARP.
So Bevin's run a business. I've run a business. I have no clue about Senate process, and neither does Bevin.
He is GOING to lose. Kentuckians prefer Mitch over Matt. And they'll prefer Mitch over Grimes. She's ashamed to be a Democrat.
-
He was FOR TARP before he was against it.
As the kids say, that is weak sauce. Is that all ya got?
-
How many other TEXANS we got running around here? Looks like we might need to attack Mexico.....
quite a few! But a at least one of them...Well! You'll figure it out soon enough.
-
As the kids say, that is weak sauce. Is that all ya got?
Weak? Kentuckians have frozen their support for Bevin. His big issue against Mitch was TARP, and he was FOR it.
-
Weak? Kentuckians have frozen their support for Bevin. His big issue against Mitch was TARP, and he was FOR it.
Frozen that is stretching it a bit and you know it.
Why are you so gun-ho for Mitch? You can't say because he is a winner because Bevin is doing better against the dem and if Mitch retired with his Elmer Fudd gun all would be well. He can golf and be happy, happy, happy.
-
You're new here. I'd suggest putting the smart-ass on the shelf. What is your point.
Let me put this as simply as I can, sinkspur. I asked you a question the other day about saving the lives of American Soldiers.
You answered in a manner that I already knew that you would.
Do not give me any crap about being "new" here, Skippy. I've been around the block more than you could ever imagine.
In addition, you're really brave on the interweb. Too bad that you are not (in person) getting in my face to admonish me about being a "smart ass". I may not be as lean but, I am still a Marine. I have no tolerance for turds like you and you can put that in the bank.
Apologies to everyone that had to read this. I could not and would not let this garbage go unanswered.
-

McConnell has an 80% rating from Heritage Action. He's a solid conservative and knows how the Senate works.
If Bevin won his seat, he'd be getting coffee for John McCain and other senior Republicans.
Bevin is not going to beat McConnell. It should be obvious to everybody now.
-

You want to whip my ass? Because you think I dissed you on a website? LOL!!!
You'd better learn to tolerate "turds" like me, cuz I ain't going anywhere. Maybe growing a thicker skin would help.
