Adam Rich, Former Child Star of ‘Eight Is Enough,’ Dies at 54
Has anyone ever done a longevity study of "child stars"?Shirley Temple made it to 86, and I'm sure there are others, but I have a gut feeling that your guess of fifty or under may be correct and pushed there by the after 1950's boom period of TV child stars.
I am guessing its under 50.
Billy Mumy is still kicking it, AFAIK. Co-star Angela Cartwright left the business for a happy life. There others like Paul Petersen from the Donna Reed Show that has worked hard to help child stars.
Now, a point here...both had co-stars who helped them stay on the path. In Billy and Angela's case, it was Jonathon Harris.
There others like Paul Petersen from the Donna Reed Show that has worked hard to help child stars.
He's been through practically the worst that can happen to a former child star when the Hollywood tide suddenly turns and one is no longer a part of the neat elite. Unlike others, however, such as Anissa Jones, Rusty Hamer and Dana Plato, he survived. As a result, actor Paul Petersen, today, is THE most dedicated advocate in protecting both present-day child stars and shunned one-time celebrity tykes, alike. Paul formed "A Minor Consideration", a child-actor support group back in 1990, and it has had a tremendously positive and profound effect in Hollywood.[/i

Publicly she said she was unvaccinated. Though, at this point, it's unlikely that made much of a difference. And if she was, the rationale behind it (there is a huge resistance to public health measures in black America because of the Tuskegee Experiment) would likely also mean she turned down Paxlovid as well.

... Beck’s playing stood apart; he was among the wildest of players, yet also the most controlled and precise. He unquestionably had the widest range of influences of any of his peers; never doctrinaire about the blues or anything else, he could play in any style. He was a student of guitar effects and unleashed essays of unearthly sounds, but always with a mind-bending clarity and precision. He was, for a time, the leader of the band that some thought might claim a heavy-metal crown from Led Zeppelin, but was just as comfortable displaying easy-listening jazz chops on songs by Charles Mingus or Narada Michael Walden. And in an industry of showoffs and sociopaths, he was a showboat only onstage, tending to be aloof elsewhere, one who kept his own counsel on just about everything but the music. ...

Sister Andre, the world’s oldest living person, dies at 118RIP
By David Propper
January 17, 2023
The world’s oldest living person, who enjoyed chocolate and a daily glass of wine, died early Tuesday.
French nun Sister Andre was 118, which gave her the crown for oldest person across the globe in April 2022, before her death this week.
She was born as Lucile Randon on Feb. 11, 1904 – the same year Theodore Roosevelt was elected president – and was a teacher and governess who looked after children during World War II.
She then spent almost three decades working with orphans and taking care of the elderly at a French hospital before she became a Catholic nun in 1944.
Living through the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, she easily fended off a bout with COVID-19 in 2021. She tested positive for the virus at her nursing home, but didn’t show any symptoms.

:yowsa: How wonderful it would be to have known such a person.Truth.
If you haven't noticed, the number of celebrities dying with no cause of death is through the roof. It is not a mystery.
They are dying as a result of the COVID vaccine. Our government is not to be trusted. The CDC has proven they are not to be trusted repeatedly.
The reality is that death rates are up in every heavily vaccinated country by 10%. That number will continue to rise. But in the USA, they are covering up the higher mortality rate. In the end, millions will die prematurely because of the vaccine. And the pharma companies will be held completely harmless. They have their to be held harmless agreement from the government. They have zero liability. ZIP!
Anyone accepting the notion to have an EXPERIMENTAL VACCINE injected into their body, better start reassessing their life goals. If you answer the following question with a yes, then you need to get smart quick. Do you want to live a full life with nothing shortening your life that is self imposed? If yes, unless you have a health issue, i.e. diabetes, you need to never get another mRNA vaccines. NEVER!!! It destroys your natural immunity, as was indicated by Virologists back in 2020 before the vaccines were on the market. And those doctors were censored and muted every way possible. They knew exactly what was coming.

@jafo2010Exactly. As I've noted before, the baby boom started in 1946, 77 years ago, which is the average American lifespan. This was bound to start happening.
Well, the truth is that a lot of them are dying because they are old or because they were druggies or alcoholics, and it was just their time to die.
I am NOT saying that Covid shots are harmless, but they are clearly NOT the cause of every death e hear about.

And let this be a fair warning: please keep discussions on this thread within the context of the specific people who have died. My personal views on that particular topic aside, there are places on this board for that discussion that are not here.
Unless the deceased's vaccination status is known and relevant to the topic (such as was the case of Diamond a few days ago), let's keep the speculation out of here, please.

@Right_in_VirginiaI think you are right, but in heavily Black areas, I wouldn't look for Black Conservatives to step up in the hood. These are the places their kids still get beat down for 'acting white' and getting good grades in school.
It really does take a tremendous amount of courge for a black person in the US to publicly support conservatism. This is especially true for a woman in the entertainment industry.
The fact that her career was successful seems to ME to indicate that conservatives have more black support than some of us may think.

Until that cultural problem is addressed and Black kids are allowed by their own to be successful, that tide won't change any time soon.

Tom Verlaine, the frontman of the band Television, which heavily influenced the New York punk rock scene in the 1970s, has died. He was 73.
The Hollywood Reporter learned on Saturday that the guitarist and songwriter died following a short illness in New York City, surrounded by close friends.
Born in New Jersey on Dec. 13, 1949, by the name of Thomas Miller, Verlaine grew up during most of his childhood in Wilmington, Delaware. Around five years after he moved to New York City in 1968, the musician founded the band Television in 1973 with Richard Hell, Billy Ficca and Richard Lloyd. Fred Smith was brought in after Hell departed the band two years later.

Famous actress Annie Wersching, best known for her roles in “24” and “Star Trek: Picard,” died Sunday of cancer at the age of 45.
Wersching’s husband Stephen Full issued a statement expressing his deep loss and grief. “There is a cavernous hole in the soul of this family today,” Full said according to Deadline. “But she left us the tools to fill it. She found wonder in the simplest moment. She didn’t require music to dance,” he said. “She taught us not to wait for adventure to find you. ‘Go find it. It’s everywhere.’ And find it we shall,” Full continued.

Death Cocktail Revealed: Lisa Marie Presley Took Lethal Opioids, Lost 40-50 Lbs. Weeks Before DeathSad, because if she did it to look good for the event it didn't work, in the picture I saw she looked liked hell. All she accomplished was leaving her children motherless and a lighter coffin for the pallbearers.
Story by OK Magazine • 1h ago
Lisa Marie Presley was on an extreme weight loss regimen and had relapsed into taking opioids in the months leading up to her tragic death on Thursday, January 12, sources confirmed.
The "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" singer had fallen dependent on drugs after she wanted to look her best for the multiple awards shows in which her famous father's biopic, Elvis, would be recognized at, family insiders explained.
Lisa Marie sat beside Austin Butler — who played Elvis Presley in the award-winning film — at the 2023 Golden Globes just two days before she suffered cardiac arrest and tragically died at the age of 54 years old.
Two months before the Academy Awards, the mother-of-four underwent plastic surgery and started to take weight loss medication, which resulted in the singer dropping 40-50 pounds in the mere six weeks before the renowned event, sources continued to reveal to a news publication on Monday, January 30.

Composer Burt Bacharach died at 94 years old. The news was reportedly shared by his publicist Tina Brausam, who said he died on Wednesday in his Los Angeles, California, home.
The Oscar-winning composer is known for several hit compositions, including “Walk on By” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose."
According to Brausam, he died of natural causes.
RIP Mr. Bacharach, and thanks for the music.
Surely the NFL will honor him with a moment of silence at the Super Bowl. After all, he did much more for his country than the guy who had his heart stop momentarily after a tough hit. No? It figures. buh byeThis implication that Damar Hamlin is some worthless POS who didn't do anything WAS NOT NECESSARY.

This isn't the 1940s and 1950s anymore. The vast majority of American men are civilians, and while there's still a draft, nobody uses it anymore (thankfully).
So can we please not turn Mr. Bacharach's death into a pissing contest between whether veterans or civilians are more important, please?

@catfish1957
I have a hard time believing a professional soccer player died on the field from taking illegal drugs.
I could VERY easily be wrong, but I suspect his death may be related to undiagnoised medical problems.
These guys are probably drug tested often, plus they KNOW their success and wealth in life is dependent on being able to chase a fast moving ball up and down a field.
The reference here is to the "vaccine", in other words the jab.
@catfish1957Probably not illegal drugs, just wonder how many boosters he had...

Why?
His policies had nothing to do with this. Our borders were being breached day and night by drug runners long before he was pushed into office. I say "pushed" because I don't believe for a minute that even Dims are Dim enough to have elected that dummy.

The point is that fentanyl is not a point of a drug, but a poison. Biden's polices ARE the point of failure that allow this to happen.
So Pete if you accidently died after eating a cannabis gummy laced with fentanyl (Not that you would), would you be a victim of drug abuse?
Just asking.....

My wife of 22 years, companion of 33 years (we lived together for 11 years before getting formally married) died last Wednesday, March 8, from complications of metastatic cancer. She had been ill with various symptoms since mid-January, but it wasn't until Feb. 20 when I had to take her to the emergency room for what turned out to be blood clots on both lungs that we found out about the cancer. The blood clots were treated successfully, but the cancer was not treatable. Her decline in the hospital was so rapid that they were not able to discover the original source of the cancer before her death. The biopsy they did on Feb. 28 showed that the cancer was of a "diffuse type" which would not respond well to chemotherapy, and it had spread to too many locations to attempt treatment with radiation. And then she was gone.
I am managing to cope by focusing on the tasks that need to be done. But ultimately, my life will be empty without her.

I've been an Astros fan, since near the beginning, and remember the culture shock of when the Yankees sent Joe to Houston.
He felt and acted like he was in a different country :silly:
Then the stro's shipped his ass off to the Cubs. :( That same year (1970) I read the book Ball Four and laughed my ass off reading about Pepitone's antics!
Loved that Book. Doug Rader was especially a hoot. I don't think I would ever have eaten anything out of that locker room.
Saw team mate Jesus Alou died recently too. That generations sure is dying off fast.
Our generation took so many words from that book and they became part of our lexicon. That was a great book, for sure.

Lance Reddick, famous for his work on HBO's "The Wire" and the "John Wick" movie franchise has died ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Lance's body was discovered at his Studio City home Friday morning around 9:30 AM. His cause of death is currently unclear, but our law enforcement sources say it appears to be natural.
Lance had been doing a press tour for the fourth installment of the 'John Wick' franchise -- he plays Charon in the movie -- and had a guest appearance scheduled for next week on Kelly Clarkson's show.
Lance posted a selfie video on social media Wednesday morning, appearing to be at home with his dogs instead of attending the 'Wick 4' premiere in New York City ... though he never mentioned why he wasn't going to the premiere.

I don't remember any specific roles that I have seen him in,but I do remember he was an excellent actor.
I do remember binge watching "The Wire",though, and consider it to be one of the best tv series ever aired. Seems like EVERYBODY in that series were the best actors you could find. I know that makes no sense, but watch it for yourself and then get back with me.
Aw man, he was one of my all-time favorites. Loved him in Fringe and everything else he did. Just watched a reaction to Wick a few weeks ago. That's where I knew him from (Smacks forehead) I just couldn't place him. Loved him in that show and the Wick movies.
So much talent gone too soon.

You told me about “The Wire” a few months ago and I binged it around Thanksgiving. So grateful you told me about this show, it was one of the bes5 TV dramas I’ve ever seen
Willis Reed, legendary Knicks Hall of Famer, dead at 80
By Don Burke
March 21, 2023
Willis Reed, the heart and soul of the Knicks’ most recent NBA championship teams, and the man who gave New York City sports one of its most iconic moments, died Tuesday, The Post has confirmed. He was 80.
Known simply as “The Captain” years before Derek Jeter was born, Reed played 10 seasons in the NBA, all with the Knicks, for whom he also served as coach and general manager after his playing career ended in 1974. He also coached and was an executive with the Nets when they played their games in New Jersey and was an executive with the New Orleans Hornets from 2004-07.
The first member of the Knicks to have his number retired, Reed was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 and was named among the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history during the 1996-97 season.
But it was during Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals that Reed carved his name in the hardwood history of Madison Square Garden and the league.

Mark Russell, Washington’s social-political satirist and stand-up comic who spoofed, teased and laughed at celebrities, politicians, politics and popular culture for more than 50 years from behind his star-spangled piano, died March 30 at his home in the District. He was 90.
The cause was complications from prostate cancer, said his wife, Alison Russell.
From the waning years of Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration through the presidencies of 10 succeeding chief executives, Mr. Russell poked fun at the foibles and flaws of the well-known, the pompous and the powerful in monologues replete with pithy one-liners and musical ditties. He called himself “a political cartoonist for the blind.”

Craig Breedlove, the Southern California hot rodder who assembled a team of engineers and street racers to bolt rocket engines onto wheels, has died. He was 86.
Breedlove set records at more than 400, 500, and 600 mph in jet-powered cars running surplus fighter jet engines. For a three-year period from 1962 to 1965, Breedlove battled two other great land speed racers for glory on the Bonneville Salt Flats—Art Arfons and his brother Walt. Between the three of them the records were made, broken and set again.
Breedlove's final top speed record was a blistering 606.6 mph.

Ben Ferencz, the last living prosecutor from the Nuremberg trials, who tried Nazis for genocidal war crimes and was among the first outside witnesses to document the atrocities of Nazi labor and concentration camps, has died. He had just turned 103 in March.
Ferencz died Friday evening in Boynton Beach, Florida, according to St. John’s University law professor John Barrett, who runs a blog about the Nuremberg trials.
The death also was confirmed by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.
“Today the world lost a leader in the quest for justice for victims of genocide and related crimes,” the museum tweeted.
Born in Transylvania in 1920, Ferencz immigrated as a very young boy with his parents to New York to escape rampant antisemitism. ...
If you've watched any documentaries about the post-WWII war crimes trials, you know this man.(https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2023/04/1947_ben_ferencz_einsatzgruppen-copy.jpg?resize=1024,682&quality=75&strip=all)

I enjoyed the interviews with him. Even in his (much) later years, he was sharp and insightful.Of course I did Pete, I also probably know quite a bit more about great people born in Transylvania like Elie Wiesel , but I don't think I would use the Obit of someone with Ferencz's history to take a shot at cheap humor....... :pondering: well maybe....

Al Jaffee, Inventive Cartoonist at Mad Magazine, Dies at 102
Al Jaffee, a cartoonist who folded in when the trend in magazine publishing was to fold out, thereby creating one of Mad magazine’s most recognizable and enduring features, died on Monday in Manhattan. He was 102.
His death, at a hospital, was caused by multi-system organ failure, his granddaughter Fani Thomson said.
It was in 1964 that Mr. Jaffee created the Mad Fold-In, an illustration-with-text feature on the inside of the magazine’s back cover that seemed at first glance to deliver a straightforward message. When the page was folded in thirds, however, both illustration and text were transformed into something entirely different and unexpected, often with a liberal-leaning or authority-defying message.

I think this may be the oldest person to get a mention on this thread.
I’ve been a subscriber to Mad since I was in 6th grade. It’s been a very guilty pleasure. Rest in Peace Sir. And thank you for all the hours of folding the Fold In

Ken Potts, one of last 2 USS Arizona survivors, dies at 102
By Associated Press
April 23, 2023
Ken Potts, one of the last two remaining survivors of the USS Arizona battleship, which sank during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, has died.
He was 102.
Howard Kenton Potts died Friday at the home in Provo, Utah, that he shared with his wife of 66 years, according to Randy Stratton, whose late father, Donald Stratton, was Potts’ Arizona shipmate and close friend.
Stratton said Potts “had all his marbles” but lately was having a hard time getting out of bed. When Stratton spoke to Potts on his birthday, April 15, he was happy to have made it to 102.
“But he knew that his body was kind of shutting down on him, and he was just hoping that he could get better but (it) turned out not,” Stratton said.

Harry Belafonte, who stormed the pop charts and smashed racial barriers in the 1950s with his highly personal brand of folk music, and who went on to become a major force in the civil rights movement, died on Tuesday at his home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He was 96.
The cause was congestive heart failure, said Ken Sunshine, his longtime spokesman.
At a time when segregation was still widespread and Black faces were still a rarity on screens large and small, Mr. Belafonte’s ascent to the upper echelon of show business was historic. He was not the first Black entertainer to transcend racial boundaries; Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and others had achieved stardom before him. But none had made as much of a splash as he did, and for a few years no one in music, Black or white, was bigger.

I used to love HB. He was musically gifted and a drop-dead gorgeous man. I bought his albums as well as front-row concert tickets. In more recent years, I saw him in a different light -- a bitter racist who always assumed the very worst about whites. After I saw his once-handsome face grossly contorted into a nasty snarl, I was done with him.Yeah, that part is sad. As a little tyke I didn't have a 'teddy bear', I had a stuffed toy elephant I called "Harry Elafonte". (after the singer). I hope he is in a better place.
Prayers for his family and loved ones.

JTA — Rabbi Harold Kushner, one of the most influential congregational rabbis of the 20th century whose works of popular theology reached millions of people outside the synagogue, has died.
Kushner, who turned 88 on April 3, died Friday in Canton, Massachusetts, just miles from the synagogue where he had been rabbi laureate for more than three decades.
Kushner’s fairly conventional trajectory as a Conservative rabbi was altered shortly after arriving at Temple Israel of Natick when, on the day his daughter Ariel was born, his 3-year-old son Aaron was diagnosed with a fatal premature aging condition, progeria.

Lord says Lightfoot died at a Toronto hospital on Monday evening. The cause of death was not immediately available
Born in Orillia, Ont., Lightfoot was hailed as Canada's folk troubadour for his soulful music and stirring lyrics. In songs such as The Canadian Railroad Trilogy and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, he explored the country's history, geography and culture.
"He is our poet laureate, he is our iconic singer-songwriter," said Rush singer Geddy Lee in the 2019 documentary Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind.

Never heard of her but young. Rest in PeaceI'm surprised, neither have I. Given that she was an American Olympic gold medalist, you'd think she'd've been able to get some good publicity and endorsements from it all. But I guess not.
My husband is a track nerd, and the talk at his running forum is that Tori was depressed over professional and personal setbacks, and took her own life.
@mountaineerMe, too. But look at the headlines, and the women who are being 'celebrated' aren't even women.
I REALLY hope that is wrong. It is bad enough for someone that young to die from some sort of medical emergency, but for someone that has worked as hard as she had to work to get to where she was to off herself,is beyond depressing.
Me, too. But look at the headlines, and the women who are being 'celebrated' aren't even women.

Decades ago, in the final verse of his most beloved hit, Gordon Lightfoot depicted a solemn scene at Mariners’ Church of Detroit: "The church bell chimed 'til it rang 29 times / For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, the bell at Mariners’ Church rang out again — now chiming 30 times to honor those perished sailors along with the artist who famously memorialized them in song.

Timothy Keller, the notable Evangelical author, theologian and New York City-based pastor, has died following a lengthy battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He was 72 years old.
Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, a congregation that Keller helped found, sent a statement to members informing them that he died Friday morning. ...
Keller authored multiple books, including the 2008 bestseller The Reason for God, an apologetics work centered on tackling tough questions like why God allows suffering and sends the unsaved to Hell.
“Keller has compiled a list of the most frequently voiced ‘doubts’ skeptics bring to his church as well as the most important reasons for faith,” noted the book’s official description.
“Keller uses literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and reasoning to explain how faith in a Christian God is a soundly rational belief, held by thoughtful people of intellectual integrity with a deep compassion for those who truly want to know the truth.” ...
Pete Brown, a cult figure in British poetry, rock, psychedelia and rhythm and blues who wrote lyrics for many of Cream’s classic songs, has died aged 82. He had been living with what he recently described as “various forms of cancer” for a number of years.
The family of his long-term late collaborator Jack Bruce wrote on social media: “We are extremely saddened to learn of the death of Jack’s long term friend and writing partner Pete Brown who passed away last night. We extend our sincere condolences to Pete’s wife Sheridan and Pete’s children as well as all his family and friends. Love from the Bruce family.”
Brown will perhaps best be remembered for his longstanding creative partnership with Bruce, which began in 1965 and lasted until the latter’s death in 2014. Brown was invited by drummer Ginger Baker to help finish the debut single by Cream, the psych-rock band also featuring Bruce and Eric Clapton. Brown would go on to write lyrics for Cream songs such as their first Top 20 hit I Feel Free, the hippy anthem Sunshine of Your Love, and White Room, its darkly tripped-out lyrics a source of fascination to generations of listeners. Dance the Night Away, meanwhile, was inspired by “sex and dancing [which] anchored me a great deal and got me through that time when I was having panic attacks” in the wake of a bad drugs experience, he later explained.

Nicholas Gray, founder of beloved NYC hot dog chain Gray’s Papaya, dead at 86
By Alex Oliveira
May 24, 2023
Nicholas Gray — the founder of Gray’s Papaya, one of New York City’s most beloved and eccentric restaurant chains — died in a Manhattan hospital last Friday.
He was 86.
His death was brought on by complications from Alzheimer’s disease, according to The New York Times.
Gray opened his first restaurant peddling hot dogs and papaya drinks at remarkably reasonable prices in 1973, back when he was a Wall Street stockbroker still reeling from a recent divorce.
Born in Chile and educated in England and Canada, one day he was walking by Papaya King on 86th Street on the Upper East Side when he was struck by the jocular atmosphere and the evocative smells of the cooking dogs and sweet juice.

George Maharis, the ruggedly handsome New York-born stage actor who went on to become a 1960s television heartthrob as a star of the series “Route 66,” died on Wednesday at at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 94.More (https://dnyuz.com/2023/05/28/george-maharis-tv-heartthrob-of-route-66-is-dead-at-94/)
His friend Marc Bahan announced his death on Facebook.
Mr. Maharis’s greatest fame arose from the role of Buz Murdock, one of two young men who traveled the country in a Corvette convertible, finding a new adventure and drama (and usually a new young woman) each week on CBS’s “Route 66.” ...
Herbert B. Leonard, the show’s executive producer, “thought he’d hired a young hunk for the show, a hip, sexy man and good actor that all the girls would go for,” Ms. Blocher wrote. “This was all true of Maharis, but not the whole story, as Leonard discovered to his anger and dismay. George was gay, it turned out.”
Ms. Blocher attributed Mr. Maharis’s departure to a number of factors. “The producers felt betrayed and duped when they learned of Maharis’s sexual orientation, and never trusted him again,” she wrote, adding, “Maharis, for his part, started to feel that he was carrying the show and going unappreciated.”
Mr. Maharis was arrested in 1967 on charges of “lewd conduct” and in 1974 on charges of “sex perversion” for cruising in men’s bathrooms. ...
Ed Ames, the deep-toned baritone pop singer and actor who portrayed the faithful Cherokee sidekick Mingo on the 1960s NBC series Daniel Boone, has died. He was 95.Hollywood Reporter (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/ed-ames-dead-daniel-boone-1235501603/)
Ames died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles after a battle with Alzheimer’s, his wife, Jeanne, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A native of Massachusetts and a son of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine, Ames starred as the Oxford-educated Mingo opposite Fess Parker as Daniel Boone on the first four seasons (1964-68) of the TV Western.
His most memorable night on television, however, came in April 1965 during an appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show. Demonstrating to host Johnny Carson how Mingo would expertly handle a tomahawk, he hurled the weapon at an outline of a cowboy drawn on a wooden board — and it stuck right in the crotch. ...
After “Rag Mop,” “Sentimental Me,” “Undecided” and another top-10 hit, the 1954 novelty song “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane,” the brothers began to perform regularly on Arthur Godfrey’s show and were one of the first acts to appear on Ed Sullivan’s Toast of the Town.
In 1955, they had their own 15-minute syndicated TV program, The Ames Brothers Show, and performed the title song for Man on Fire (1957), starring Bing Crosby. At their peak, the foursome could command $20,000 a week on tour, and they were named Billboard‘s best vocal group of 1958, when they had eight singles on the charts. ...

@mountaineerYep. $20K would buy a nice three bedroom house.
That was a serious amount of money back then!
And a decent down payment on a new Toyota today.
@Smokin JoeShe had a LOT of health problems toward the end of her life and it's amazing to me that she lasted as long as she did.
There can be no question about Tina being special in this world. If there was ever anyone who ended up doing EXACTLY what they were born to do,it was Tina. She was always great, but when she came out with "Proud Mary",she just blew the world away. If you haven't seen the video of her performing it,you have truly missed something you needed to see and hear.
And she didn't slow down after that one. It was almost like she was nuclear powered. How anyone could have THAT much energy and not explode has always been a mystery to me.
The entire world suffered a great loss when she died, despite the fact that she quit performing years ago. It was a great comfort to me to just know that she was still living, and it brought a smile to my face when I thought about it.

@GtHawkIt was a novelty song and back then and into the sixties they were very popular, I think the king of novelty songs was The Singing Barber, Perry Como. You may recall he was so low key that SCTV did a parody of him.
"The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane" is PROBABLY the first non-church song I ever heard that I can remember. Since the song was a big "nothing" musically,I suspect the reason I remember it is that we were living in a house on a street named "Shadow Lawn".
I can only guess there weren't very many songs being written and produced back then,or it would have never gotten any air time.

The Robertsons deserve a special place in Hell for grifting off the name of Christ. Every time you turn on The 700 Club, you can see some story about how some poor couple deep in debt sent their money to The 700 Club and God miraculously provided them with wealth! His son Gordon is even worse with it.
An old music colleague of mine from my high school days—a conservative, hardcore Calvinist now—shared a story about how he received a blessing he swore was for him as he watched The 700 Club. It wasn't. He wasn't miraculously healed, even though he thought he was for a couple of days. Now this guy thinks that God deliberately afflicts people to make them draw closer to Him, which is its own problematic teaching.
It is said, "by your fruits, you shall know them."

Cormac McCarthy, the formidable and reclusive writer of Appalachia and the American Southwest, whose raggedly ornate early novels about misfits and grotesques gave way to the lush taciturnity of “All the Pretty Horses” and the apocalyptic minimalism of “The Road,” died on Tuesday at his home in Santa Fe, N.M. He was 89.
Knopf, his publisher, said in a statement that this son, John, had confirmed the death.
Mr. McCarthy’s fiction took a dark view of the human condition and was often macabre. He decorated his novels with scalpings, beheadings, arson, rape, incest, necrophilia and cannibalism. “There’s no such thing as life without bloodshed,” he told The New York Times magazine in 1992 in a rare interview. “I think the notion that the species can be improved in some way, that everyone could live in harmony, is a really dangerous idea.”

We’re Told Never to Meet Our Childhood Heroes. Knowing Daniel Ellsberg Proved That WrongRolling Stone (https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/political-commentary/daniel-ellsberg-glenn-greenwald-1234773509/)
Glenn Greenwald remembers the Pentagon Papers whistleblower and ceaseless anti-war activist
June 16, 2023
That you should never meet your heroes, as they are bound to disappoint you, has become such conventional wisdom that it requires no author to affirm it. In a 2020 satirical New Yorker article, Alex Witt attributed the proverb to the faceless “they” (“They say, ‘Never meet your heroes,’ ” adding, “It’s good advice. I’ve met all of my idols, and I’ve been disappointed by every single one”). Some internet pages attribute the quote to the British comedian Alan Carr after meeting Paul Newman, though that appears more apocryphal than reliable. It hardly matters who first said it; it just strikes one as intuitively true because the glaring, multi-faceted imperfections of humans when seen up close make a heroic image unlikely to survive interpersonal scrutiny.
Daniel Ellsberg, the renowned Pentagon Papers whistleblower, single-handedly destroyed the validity of this advice for me. Ellsberg was one of my two or three top childhood heroes. Though I was only four years old in 1971, when he knowingly assumed a high probability of life in prison to inform the American people about systemic lying by the U.S. government regarding the war in Vietnam, I became engrossed by both the Pentagon Papers and Watergate dramas as I entered adolescence. Those became the formative events for my understanding of politics and journalism.
The lies told by leading Pentagon and CIA officials about the Vietnam War were numerous, and they came fast and furious from the start of the U.S. role in the war in the early 1960s to its end in the mid-1970s. The lie that led Ellsberg to risk his liberty to expose was central. Top Pentagon and other U.S. Security State officials were publicly insisting they were getting closer and closer to winning the war, all while privately admitting from the start that victory would be impossible, that the best-case scenario was a stalemate with the North Vietnamese.
Ellsberg’s remarkable moral courage and self-sacrifice to try to stop an unjust war from spiraling even further out of control played a major role in shaping my understanding of journalism, the need for transparency, the virtues of bravery, and the duties of citizenship. I read everything I could get my hands on about Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers case. That someone at the age of 40 would be willing to spend the rest of his life in prison for a political cause both mystified and excited me. Ellsberg occupied a central place in my childhood imagination about heroism, integrity, and courage. ...

Yes,it was. Cause of death was he was 76 years old. It is not surprising when someone dies at 76. The only surprise is they lived that long.
Not sure studies of longevity of rock stars has been done, but I'd bet a bunch that it is less than the general population.

Tony Bennett dead at 96 in his hometown of New York: ‘Good Italian stock’RIP sir. you will be missed.
By Rob Bailey-Millado
July 21, 2023
Tony Bennett, the legendary pop, jazz and big-band vocalist, has died after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 96.
Publicist Sylvia Weiner confirmed Bennett’s death, revealing he passed away in his hometown of New York. His official cause of death — just two weeks shy of his 97th birthday — has not yet been announced.
“I come from good Italian stock — but I’ve tried to stay fit through the years,” Bennett told me nearly 20 years ago.
At the time he was a spry 72, meeting and greeting concertgoers with swagger before a benefit performance in the blazing hot Sonoran Desert of Tucson, Ariz.
For two decades beyond that, the 20-time Grammy winner kept swinging as smoothly as ever — making history as one of the only artists to chart new albums in the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and the first three decades of the 21st century.

By Danica Daniel
July 26, 2023
Sinéad O’Connor, the gifted but controversial singer of the classic song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” has died at the age of 56.
In a statement, the singer’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor erupted onto the music scene with her debut album, “The Lion and the Cobra” in 1987 at the age of 20. She went on to release 10 studio albums during her record-setting career.
Three years after her debut, she became a household name with a rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U” — a power ballad originally written by Prince.
The track turned O’Connor into an international sensation and was named the number one world single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.

Just a friendly reminder::amen:
If not for her intentionally disrespectful publicity stunt on national TV 30 years ago, Sinead O'Connor would be a one-hit wonder (with a song that wasn't even hers, how's that for a self-styled "protest singer?") whose opinions would only be slightly more notable than yours or mine. She was an artifact of a brief period of the early 1990s, like Amy Fisher, Lorena Bobbitt, Tonya Harding and Michael Fay.
The fact that she's being lionized as a "legend" makes me laugh. She had been forgotten by the time she died.

Interesting how you singled out her not being a song writer and said not one word about her voice.

I was never a fan of Sinead O'Connor. Because of that, I did not much pay attention to anything she did when she was younger. She tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II on SNL in the 90s. She was against the child abuse perpetrated by the priests in the Catholic church and I suppose she blamed the hierarchy for protecting the men preying upon children.
@jafo2010
I admired the hell out of her for that. Very few people in show biz would have had the courage to do that, and it needed to be done by people in the public eye to draw attention to it.QuoteHer youngest son committed suicide a few months ago, and she cherished him, and I suppose she did not want to live without him. Sad really.
I am GUESSING her entire life had more sadness than joy. Damn shame because she had an amazing voice and put her whole heart into everything she did.

Then, immediately after the show ended... he ended up getting busted in that porno movie theater...

The Exorcist had to be the most scary movie I have ever seen. Rest In Peace, Sir.
I would put The Exorcist at number two behind Alien. Alien creeped me out more. The Shining didn't translate well from book to screen, but reading the book kept the bedroom light on.

I still recall seeing the Exorcist at the drive-in, remember those?, a friend and and I went in my car. It was a late showing and close to midnight when it let out, we were spooked like everyone else and that night we had the heaviest fog I could recall and I forgot to turn the headlights on until I was half a mile down the road. Yeah definitely spooked me a lot more than other horror movies , maybe because of the whole Satan and evil component.
The Exorcist still scares me. Alien didn't phase me. BUT...if you read the Shining the movie will make ya laugh. Without a doubt one of the scariest books I've ever read.

Cowboys’ Hall of Fame executive Gil Brandt dead at 91Back when the Cowboys were respectable. Ever since Jerry Jones took them over and fired Tom Landry, they are dead to me.
By Miles Schachner
August 31, 2023
Longtime Cowboys executive Gil Brandt has died at the age of 91.
Brandt worked alongside legendary coach Tom Landry and general manager Tex Schramm to help turn the Cowboys into a perennial Super Bowl contender.
He worked with the Cowboys from 1960-88 and his innovative scouting techniques helped revolutionize the sport and the franchise.
“We are so deeply saddened by the passing of Gil Brandt — a true icon and pioneer of our sport. Gil was at the very core of the early success of the Dallas Cowboys and continued to serve as a great ambassador for the organization for decades beyond that. His contributions cemented his spot in the Ring of Honor,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement.

I've always wondered if he was as affable as he came across.
Going to have to have a margarita today in his memory.
Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has died. He was 75-years-old.
The Richardson Center for Global Engagement says he died in his sleep at his summer home in Chatham, MA.
“Governor Richardson passed away peacefully in his sleep last night. He lived his entire life in the service of others – including both his time in government and his subsequent career helping to free people held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad. There was no person that Governor Richardson would not speak with if it held the promise of returning a person to freedom. The world has lost a champion for those held unjustly abroad and I have lost a mentor and a dear friend," said Mickey Bergman, Vice President of the Richardson Center.

I watched that and my heart broke just a little. I never mentioned this before (at least I don’t believe so) but in a past life I lived in the Caribbean for about two years. Lived life I did and Jimmy was a big part of it. Yeah, I feel it.

Though it is a part of life, it still is difficult to watch singers, musicians, actors and actresses that we have grown up with pass. It certainly puts one's own mortality into focus and makes you realize how precious life is and how quickly time melts away.
If I was still spinning stax of wax I would play "Gods Own Drunk" in his honor even though we were forbidden to give it air play it after Lord Buckley estate sued Him. Not sure if that ban is still in effect today..Not sure if there's a ban...but I'd have played it anyway.

Every time I went out to be on a location or pad for however long it took to finish the job, there was a pang of sadness I'd shake off and hit the road. Getting back home was something I looked forward to, even though I enjoyed my work.
Then came the well, where I was 100 miles out and got the phone call. I didn't make it back in time, and most of my reason for looking forward to getting home was gone.
I used to sing along to "Come Monday", but now, I just can't.

I’m sure of that, @Bigun. We are blessed to have know people, men, like that. There are too many in today’s world who never have. And worse, they don’t understand or have the appreciation that such men exist.

Though Prog-masters like ELP, Yes, PF, Moody Blues, et. al. pioneered electronic keyboards and synth, Wright was one of the first to serve it up to the pop masses. Wasn't a big fan at the time, but he did provide a step change of how synthesizers are added, now even to the point it is common place in many musical genres.
When I saw him, there was a drummer and 3 keyboards. Synthesizers everywhere. I was a big fan of Yes and ELP, too.

My mother was born on September 1st 1933 and passed away on September 1st 1923 her 90th birthday. My sister Nadine wrote this and I delivered it on Wednesday.Prayers up for your mom, and the rest of the family. She sounds like she was a great lady.
Our Mom was one tough lady, and her toughness rubbed off on us 3 kids. She taught us humility, patience, courage and gave us strength and confidence. She supported us in everything we did, from our activities, to our sports, to our careers, to our marriages. Her focus changed a bit when the Grandchildren came along. We all took a backseat to them, and she became their number one cheerleader; from their sports, to the theatre, to concerts.
She loved camping, being outside, picnics, hummingbirds, and covered bridges. She did not swim, but she loved spending time at the beach and taking her grandchildren to the creek. She taught us how to make forts out of bed sheets and cushions, which was passed down to the grandchildren during many sleepovers for all four at once (Can you say insanity)
She loved traveling, going to the movies, puzzles, and playing cards. So much that she taught all of us to play "Kings in the corner" ,and Rummy. She tried to teach us Dominos, but failed miserably, so cards it was.
She loved doing all types of crafts, ceramics, crocheting, and quilting. Our Halloween, Christmas, and Easter decorations prove that along with the beds that have the afghans displayed on them.
Finally she loved angels, to which she is one now watching over us to make sure we have the courage and strength to carry on.
With all our love;
Thom- First born, over achiever, Mr. Fix-it
Nadine-No Mom, I don't remember, I must have ben grounded.

... As a teen, LeFevre was expelled from a private religious high school when his father took him out to be with the family while they performed at a local concert. At 17 years old, while in the Army where he was paid $84 per month, he wrote his first song, "Without Him." While stationed at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, the LeFevres were performing at a gospel convention in Memphis. That weekend, LeFevre hitchhiked over 600 miles to get there. Onstage, singing "Without Him", he did not know that Elvis Presley was there. After the concert, Elvis asked to meet LeFevre. Shortly thereafter, Elvis recorded the song for his album, How Great Thou Art, and within the next year, over a hundred artists would record his song. ...
His first mainstream album, entitled Mylon, We Believe (Atlantic/Cotillion Records 1970), is considered by some to be the first true "Jesus Rock" album ...

Simply, WOW!One of my favorite lines from NCIS was when Jimmy asked 'Dr. Mallard' what he looked like when he was younger and he replied "A lot like Ilya Kuryakin."
As Ilya Kuryakin he was coolness. Loved him as Dr. Mallard. I wonder if to some degree he played himself as "Ducky".

Richard Roundtree, the ultracool actor who helped open the door to a generation of Black filmmakers and performers with his portrayal of private eye John Shaft, “the cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about,” died Tuesday. He was 81.
Roundtree died at his home in Los Angeles of pancreatic cancer, his manager, Patrick McMinn, told The Hollywood Reporter.
He was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993 and had a double mastectomy. “Breast cancer is not gender specific,” he said four years later. “And men have this cavalier attitude about health issues. I got such positive feedback because I spoke out about it, and it’s been quite a number of years now. I’m a survivor.”

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Arnold Diaz, a former reporter for PIX11 News whose “What a Shame!” reports exposed wrongdoing by private industry and government agencies, has died at age 74.
Diaz, who was born in Brooklyn, won 48 Emmy Awards for his reporting throughout his career that spanned decades. Over the years, Diaz’s “Shame” reports led to action by law enforcement and have been cited by prosecutors as being instrumental in putting scam artists behind bars.
Diaz retired last year after being with PIX11 News since 2014. At the time, Diaz said he would miss the excitement of the job, but he wouldn’t miss the times he was “shoved, spit at and threatened with guns” over his reporting.

Likely pain killers, sadly.
He was brilliant. He was a bully. He coached some of the most perfectly disciplined basketball ever played, and then acted undisciplined in his own life.
He was an American original and a cultural touchstone with oversized impact, in ways good and, yes, sometimes less so.
You could say Bob Knight was a product of his time, but even half a century ago he pushed the edges of proper conduct; attempting, say, to beat down the door to the referee’s dressing room was frowned upon back in the 1970 NIT as well.
Complicated? They don't get much more complicated than Robert Montgomery Knight, one of the greatest coaches of all time. He combined a demanding will and a legendary temper to become as famous for his authoritarian outbursts as decades of dominance highlighted by three national college basketball titles.
Knight died on Wednesday at his home in Bloomington, Indiana after a lengthy illness, his family announced. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer was 83.
RIP Mr. Perry, I enjoyed your work. Sad to say I'm not surprised because he has been battling addiction for years. I wonder what the autopsy will show.

I lived through and remember much about the Carter era. He was a disaster of a POTUS, but at least you knew he wanted to have the nation's best interest at heat. I will grant that, versus the current cast of clowns who are hell bent on destroying this country.

My problems with Jimmy involve mostly the disastrous economy and his post-presidency Carter Center support for Hamas and other Islamoterrorists. I just saw a video recounting how Mrs. Carter was very supportive of Jim Jones and the Peoples' Temple, not long before 900+ people died in Jonestown. Seems to me neither of the Carters was very discerning.

Marty Krofft, who with his brother Sid produced memorable kids shows “H.R. Pufnstuf” and “Land of the Lost” — as well as the 2009 feature based on the latter — has died. He was 86.
Krofft died of kidney failure Saturday in Los Angeles, Calif., a family representative told Variety.
Often referred to as the King of Saturday Mornings, Krofft and his brother also produced a number of primetime variety shows, including “Donny and Marie” and “Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.”
Sid and Marty Krofft began their careers producing children’s television with “H.R. Pufnstuf,” a live-action program about a boy (played by British actor Jack Wild) in a fantastic land with a dragon for a friend (H.R. Pufnstuf, voiced by Lennie Weinrib) and a witch — Witchiepoo, played by Billie Hayes — for an enemy; as conceptualized, the show followed the interactions between human actors; actors in colorful, oversized costumes; and life-size puppets with enormous heads.

Denny Laine, lead singer of the Moody Blues and a guitarist with Paul McCartney's band Wings, has died at the age of 79.
His wife Elizabeth Hines said he died after a long battle with lung disease.
"I was at his side, holding his hand as I played his favourite Christmas songs for him," she said in a statement.
Among other achievements, Laine sang on the Moody Blues' multi-million selling Go Now and co-wrote the Wings hit Mull of Kintyre.
I disagree.
The only thing Lear did was bring something to the TV screen that was already happening everywhere else. And quite frankly, is happening again now.
Compare Archie Bunker to Donald Trump. Other than money, they're practically the same. Poor speaking skills, bombastic reactionary views, both from Queens.
Lear was a liberal but he was one who understood other points of view. A true liberal, a literal dying breed these days. He understood that nobody was 100% perfect; even his liberal characters like Maude and Meathead were flawed caricatures. Without that it would've been easy to dismiss Archie as a villain—but he instead became an icon.
Lear and Henning were in the same business only in the same sense that Patrick Mahomes and Megan Rapinoe are both pro football players. Technically, but otherwise completely incomparable. Lear was a realist. He did dramedy, and he did it well.
Didn't he do Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman? That was him.
That was him.
You either loved or hated that show.
"No. No. My floor can't have waxy yellow buildup! It says so here on the bottle!"
I am one who hated that show, and Louise Lasser, I think she was Lear's wife...I saw a spoof of MHMH on Carol Burnett recently, and I LMAO.
I saw that as well and laughed. MHMH is very time dated. But Lear did some good stuff, even if he was a big lib.
I didn't watch any of the Lear programs.
I get the impression that I didn't miss much.

Tom Smothers, the older half of the comic folk duo the Smothers Brothers, whose skits and songs on “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in the late 1960s brought political satire and a spirit of youthful irreverence to network television, paving the way for shows like “Saturday Night Live” and “The Daily Show,” died on Tuesday at his home in Santa Rosa, Calif., a city in Sonoma County. He was 86.
He died “following a recent battle with cancer,” a spokesman for the National Comedy Center announced on behalf of the family.
The Smothers Brothers made their way to network television as a folk act with a difference. With Tom playing guitar and Dick playing stand-up bass, they spent as much time bickering as singing.
With an innocent expression and a stammering delivery, Tom would try to introduce their songs with a story, only to be picked at by his skeptical brother. As frustration mounted, he would turn, seething, and often deliver a trademark non sequitur: “Mom always liked you best.”

Seeger had been on the show a year earlier, but that particular episode had been (cough) "cancelled". The brothers persisted and finally got him back.

No intention of dissing by omitting Seeger, but I was listing rock legends. If the list I gave was comprehensive and included folk genre legends too, I'd included Peter, Paul and Mary. Of course, some crossover argument could be made about Simon and Garfunkle.
Dec 31 (Reuters) - Shecky Greene, a comic legend of the old-school Las Vegas lounge acts who rubbed elbows with yesteryear entertainment greats, died on Sunday, his widow told the media.

Greene, who served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, headlined Vegas acts in the 1950s and 1960s where he was famous for foregoing his planned comedic routines and improvising jokes while walking through the audience with a microphone in hand.

Les McCann, a jazz titan best known for his performance with musical partner Eddie Harris of the protest song "Compared to What," has died at age 88, his manager said Sunday.
The cause and manner of death were unavailable. Manager Alan Abrahams said McCann, a piano player and singer, died Friday at a Los Angeles-area hospital after he developed pneumonia roughly one week ago.
McCann was an architect of the soul-jazz sound, helped jazz connect with the counterculture's protest music and provided a wellspring of material for sample-crazed hip-hop stars, including Notorious B.I.G., Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth, Warren G., Slick Rick, Dr. Dre and A Tribe Called Quest. ...
