Democrats retreat on climate: ‘It’s one of the more disappointing turnabouts’
A changing political climate has California Democrats recalibrating on climate policies.

SACRAMENTO, California — Donald Trump is coming for California’s signature climate policies — and so is California.

Stung by the party’s sweeping losses in November and desperate to win back working-class voters, the Democratic Party is in retreat on climate change. Nowhere is that retrenchment more jarring than in the nation’s most populous state, a longtime bastion of progressive politics on the environment.

In the past two weeks alone, California Democrats have retrenched on environmental reviews for construction projects, a cap on oil industry profits and clean fuel mandates. Elected officials are warning that ambitious laws and mandates are driving up the state’s onerous cost of living, echoing longstanding Republican arguments and frustrating some allies who say Democrats are capitulating to political pressure.

“California was the vocal climate leader during the first Trump administration,” said Chris Chavez, deputy policy director for the Coalition for Clean Air. “It’s questionable whether or not that leadership is still there.”

‘Scientists & the media published thousands of articles claiming that climate change would destroy small atoll islands due to sea level rise’ – But ‘it was all a big lie’ – Study finds ‘89% of the islands were stable or had increased in size’

Over the last two decades, scientists and the media published thousands of articles claiming that climate change would destroy small atoll islands due to sea level rise.

And the climate change was our fault. “You’re making this island disappear,” claimed @CNN

It was all a big lie. Scientists have known since 2018 that, “Over the past decades, atoll islands exhibited no widespread sign of physical destabilization in the face of sea-level rise.”
And now, six years after scientists published that study, which found that 89% of the islands were stable or had increased in size, the New York Times has finally informed its readers of this “surprising climate find.”

Russo-Ukrainian War Roundup For July 7, 2025

Lawrence Person's BattleSwarm Blog

Attacking so fast they won't know what hit them…

A lot of Russo-Ukraine War news bubbled up last week when every other damn thing was happening, so here’s a roundup, much (but not all) from Suchomimus. Plus some bits on Russia’s economy and their continuing friction with various neighbors.

•  Multiple successful Storm Shadow strikes:

•  “Storm Shadow and Ukrainian-produced cruise missiles hit a train yard in Yasynuvyata, the officer Headquarters of the 8th Guards Combined Arms Army plus drones destroy oil depot in Luhansk. Multiple impacts are seen–at least EIGHT missiles hit the train yard. Many more targeted the office headquarters. Six drones impacted the oil depot….One of Ukraine’s biggest missile strikes of the war so far.”

•  “SAM System Factory Hit By Drones in Izhevsk, Russia – Over 1,300 km From Ukraine. Liutyi drones hit the Kupol Electromechanical Plant which produces Tor and Osa SAM systems for Russia as well as drones, including Shaheds.”

•  Russia did manage to carry out a massive missile attack against Kiev, but as usual with Russian missile and drone attacks, it’s not clear that anything of military significance was actually hit.
•  There’s always talk that Russia’s economy is about to crack due to the strain from their illegal war of territorial aggression (as well western sanctions), but Putin recently announced that Russia would decrease defense spending next year. Given that there’s no way for Russia to recover material and equipment losses to its forces while continuing the war, he must imagine some sort of end to the conflict is near.

•  And there are some signs that, this time, it’s possible that Russia’s economy really is starting to crack.

Russia economy meltdown as metal production plummets 23% and recession fears soar…

The Russian economy is on the brink of recession, with several key sectors showing dwindling productivity, according to analysis. Alexander Kolyandr from the Center for European Policy Analysis took to X to explain that the country’s manufacturing sector was “losing its mojo”, even in military production.

There’s nothing quite like the gentle buzz of a bumblebee to let you know summer’s approaching.

But the distinct hum could soon become a rarity – as climate change is reducing the frequency and pitch of wing vibrations, according to scientists.

Experts warned this could have consequences for the effectiveness of bee communication and their role as pollinators.

And it could be bad news for the nation’s tomatoes, blueberries and honeysuckle plants.

A team from Uppsala University in Sweden analysed colonies of buff-tailed bumblebees – one of the most numerous bumblebee species in Europe and the UK.

DOE Warns Blackouts Could Surge 100-Fold by 2030 Without Reliable Energy
Major outages loom if America keeps chasing Biden’s green energy agenda, Energy Dept. warns.
by Audrey Streb  July 08, 2025, 11:29 AM

The Department of Energy (DOE) released a new report Monday warning of impending blackouts if the United States continues to shutter power plants without adequately replacing retiring capacity. [emphasis, links added]

DOE warned in its Monday report that blackouts could increase by a factor of 100 by 2030 if the U.S. continues to retire power plants without sufficient replacements, and that the electricity grid is not prepared to meet the demand of power-hungry data centers in the years to come without more reliable generation coming online quickly.

The report specifically highlighted wind and solar, two resources pushed by Biden, as responsible for eroding grid stability and advised that dispatchable generation from sources like coal, oil, gas, and nuclear is necessary to meet the anticipated U.S. power demand.

“This report affirms what we already know: The United States cannot afford to continue down the unstable and dangerous path of energy subtraction that previous leaders pursued, forcing the closure of baseload power sources like coal and natural gas,” DOE Secretary Chris Wright said.
