College students demand eight hours of sleep per night
Zachary Petrizzo - George Mason University •December 13, 2018

‘Everyone deserves 8 hours of sleep!’

Causes advanced by democratic socialists are many: tuition-free college, universal health care, a federal jobs guarantee, a “living wage,” and much more.

Now they’re adding a new “right” to the list — the right to eight hours of sleep per night. Apparently, gone are the days when pulling an all-nighter is a rite of passage for college kids.

A group of democratic socialist students at the Georgia Institute of Technology has launched a campaign demanding that campus leaders allow for eight hours of sleep every night.

Back when I started undergraduate school some 53 years ago, we had a solution to that problem.  We went to bed earlier.  Now that isn't as sophisticated as today's snow flakes would like, but it works. *****rollingeyes*****

Major economic collapse,  plague or an asteroid strike or some other calamity will happen in our lifetime and there will be a major reset.  We are due for another World War-China is my bet.

Who is stopping them? I seem to recall scheduling my own classes and class times. If these people still need a mommy to tell them when it's time to start op partying, playing games or getting off Facebook they shouldn't be wasting space in college.

Exactly. If I pulled an all-nighter to study for finals, it was my choice. Otherwise, I could have gone to bed at 8 p.m. if I so chose.

Exactly.

Sleep is over-rated.

That's completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, but since you asked: I worked 20 hours per week throughout my eight semesters of college and still earned a 4.0 GPA for most of those semesters.

Do you think another 20 or 30 hours per week might have made things a little bit more difficult?

Then they should scale back on the number of classes they’re taking. Or cut out the partying.

And yes, actually, in my last year, when I got straight A’s on a full time class schedule I was also working 40 to 50 hours a week.

Full time job combined with Full time class schedule equals fool time.

Also irrelevant. Did I mention I also played intercollegiate and intramural sports while attending school full-time, working 20 hours per week and getting straight As?

The point is that how much sleep a college student gets is a matter of personal choice, self-discipline and - above all - personal responsibility. As Oceander said, a student needs to properly order his or her priorities. If you can't manage your schedule to fit in everything you want to do, then the schedule (and what you want to do) may need adjustment - especially if partying and drugs are part of the equation.

There's a lot of people that just aren't as badass as you are. They could do a lot better in school if the cost of living wasn't forcing them to work their asses off. Too bad there's no way we could help those young Americans.

Wait until they become parents.

They think College is hard on sleep???

Most of them aren't.

Maybe the government really should be involved in helping those poor helpless sleepyhead students, after all:

Michigan mom calls police on son who wouldn't wake up for school
by DAVE BONDY, WEYI

GRAND BLANC TWP, Mich (WEYI) (https://nbc25news.com/news/local/grand-blanc-mom-calls-police-on-son-who-wouldnt-wake-up-for-school) — Crystal Towns has had enough with the morning struggle of waking her son up for school in the morning.

"I woke him up. He thought he was just going to not go and I said 'nope you're learning today boy,'" said Towns.

Towns struggled with her son, working to wake him up.

"He blamed his sister for not waking him up, and I had it. So I called the school resource officer to come pick him up. He wasn't bad, he just thought he was gonna not go to school again, said Towns.

Towns then grabbed her phone and called a school resource officer with Grand Blanc Township who came to her house and met her son at the door.

"I called [the officer's] cell phone and he answered and he came and got him, came to the door, knocked then told him "I'm here to take you to school and you are riding in the backseat" and they left.

Towns hopes this will serve as a lesson for her son and others to wake up and go to school.

Sad. They demand they get to sleep at night, instead of doze off in class....

I got about 4 hours of sleep a night through my undergrad years, on average.

Okay, you're required to live in student housing.  Bed check and electricity off at 9pm sharp.

Give it a year or two and then see if they're ready to grow the f up.

For myself I was taking classes two days a week that ran from between 8 am and 8 pm and working thirty two hours in a machine shop. For three years before that I worked in a restaurant where 90 percent of the waitresses and all the hosts were college students and they carried a full class load worked thirty hours a week and partied half the week nights and not a one, a single one ever whined about needing eight hours of sleep. What we have are a bunch of children raised to be  8888spinning cat

You understand this will mean cutting enrollment in many, if not most, universities because they do not have housing for all their students and don't have land to build more?

Sure, the state could start confiscating adjacent private property to provide housing... you know, to help the young Americans.

From the many to the few according to their imagined or just plain greedy needs. You really don't mind more of your income or property taken to support a gaggle of wastrels, now do you?

I earned my masters in two years paying cash as I went. Year 1: I worked full time, my husband worked 24 hour shifts, I had a special needs four year old, a two year old, and was pregnant with severe nausea and fatigue the first two trimesters. Year 2: Repeat year one but increase the kids’ ages a year and add exclusively pumping around the clock for an infant. Also, the now three year old developed severe asthma and we were hospitalized twice. When I got up every three hours to pump and feed the baby, I had to add a breathing treatment for the three year old. All the while our closest relative was two hours away.

That was five years ago. I graduated with a 4.0. Suck it.

So those that are responsible for their actions now must suffer because some people can’t properly schedule their lives?

Nothing new there. The responsible and self-disciplined among us always seem to be paying the price - one way or another - for other peoples' irresponsibility.

“We’re beginning our 8 Hours Campaign! If you are not getting enough sleep due to coursework overload or academic committments [sic], email us! We will advocate for you; confronting professors, challenging administration, and so forth to make a real committment [sic] to the health of every student. Everyone deserves 8 hours of sleep,” stated an emailed memo from the Young Democratic Socialists of America at Georgia Tech obtained by The College Fix.

As a Georgia Tech grad, I can say with absolute certainty that the Administration will tell each and every one of them to pound sand.  It is the student which sets his/her own course load.  If you can't handle the load, take less classes.  It an engineering school, you idiots.  If whiny STAC majors can't cut it at Tech, they need to transfer to Emory.

I had a professor that locked the door at 8:00 am, on the dot.
Get there at 8:00:01, and you were SOL.

I had two professors at Tech that still graded on the old grade scale:

A:  95 -100
B:  88 - 94
C:  81 - 87
D:  75 - 80
F:    0 - 74

I got a 94 in Senior Design.  Professor gave me a B.  I went to his office afterwards to see if there was some mistake.  He told me what his grade scale was.  So I thanked him and began to walk out.  He stopped me and said, "Hey, aren't you going to argue?"  I told him "no".  It's his class.  If that was his grade scale, then that was his grade scale.  He told me how refreshing it was to hear that considering the tantrums of other students.

Conversely, I had another professor that was a staunch liberal whom I had pissed off several times during in-class discussions.  (It was an Engineering Communications class).  I had a B going into the final, and got an A on the final exam.  My final grade was a C.  I didn't even bother making the trip to his office.  The first professor had a standard of rules that he applied equally to everyone.  The liberal professor clearly did not, using his power of grades to exact vengeance on old Conservative types venturing back into the real world on second careers.  There was no way I was going to give him the satisfaction.

My freshman year I had  a 8:00 class and would get there 8:15 or so.  Numerous times.  One day the proff barked at me..do you set  your alarm clock for  7:50 and lost his temper.

I had a solid B+  on the  test >multiple choice so he could not dock  me.

Gave me a C -  for the class.

Learned right there to be punctal and never miss class.

Life is hard, that's like a law, you make choices that make it harder you better be prepared to live with it. I had my first child when I was 22 and was managing a Mickey D's, I was working 48 hours plus a week and different shifts every day, when I came home late I would sit up with the baby all night to let my wife sleep and then be at work at 8 am and work through the day without a problem and without whining, hell there were time getting ready for an inspection I would go 36 hours straight. So I will repeat my earlier assessment, America has raise a generation of  888cryingkitty, who expect to be given everything without actually having to earn it and are completely clueless as to what actual work is.

I don't get it.  I didn't even know what the heck tired was until about 3 years ago (I'm 65, and I still get shocked when it happens). The only conclusion I can come to is social media.  Activity and phone or computer on all night. So manage your time better guys.

@GrouchoTex

My first semester after returning to school after my Navy hitch, I must have been a soph. And I had changed my major from Organic Chemistry to Electronics Technology. I had talked to the dean to see if there were any classes I could skip, but they wanted all my money. One of my first classes was dc circuits. After the first week, I would show up to take a test, come to the next session to pick up my graded test, find out when the next test was, and skip all the remaining classes. The prof gave me the evil eye, but didn't jack with my grade. I aced all those tests.

I took a digital class from him as well. He told the class in prep for one test that he was going to help bring up the class's grades. Since digital is based on zeros and ones, there was going to be only one question on the test, and you would get either a 100 or a zero. People were freaking out with worry, instead of being happy of getting an easy 100 on a test. He never put anything on a test that he didn't go over 3 times in class.

We became good friends and even took some classes together as he prepared to teach them as well. I found he also worked for my #1 customer Schlumberger as I worked my way thru school as an (OJT trained) custom downhole transformer design engineer.
