Glad you're here.  We have a good number of members but most don't contribute much.  Most articles are about politics but anything is welcome (except for religion; too many fights).  So enjoy. You can say just about anything you want as long as it's not directed at another member.

I'm happy you suggested this sub-board. Maybe we'll have enough members now to make it worthwhile.

Been here since yesterday when someone reached out to me when I could no longer post. I have reached out to slyfox who is considering joining. I never did change my alias when I moved out to the Hill Country in 2011, but remember fondly the marches at the Capitol in 2000.I met some great FReepers: basil, TheBatLady, TheSarce (may she rest in peace), anymouse, DrewsDad, and many others. Went shooting with the ladies, had the Texas HOT chapter at my house for meetings. Good times. Glad to see so many Texans here! :patriot:

Speaking of @Bigun , I noticed on TOS the other day, on the state board, that most of the Texas posters were less than enthusiastic about DT.  Bigun was mentioned as being outwardly not-DT.  Now for several days, I haven't seen a single post on that board and I can't get to it from the main page.  Not sure what that means.  Maybe nothing.

The link to the Texas FR board worked. It looks like many of them are not happy about Jim Rob is doing.

WhyisaTexasgirlinPA, Ditter, jagusfr and others seem to support whoever is nominated but don't seem to feel welcome anymore.

Maybe someone with an FR account could tell them about the Briefing Room.

Ugg....Jane Long is one of the biggest Trump trolls there.  I don't even bother with that board now.

I was born in Dallas, moved to Houston in the late 1970's....only moved back to Dallas in 2010 and been here ever since.

Native Texan here, spending the next three or so weeks with my daughter in NYC.  And am enjoying the heck out of this trip.

I have hosted the TexasCowboy Memorial Shoot for the past ten years.  If anyone is interested, the 11th annual will be held this October in Hicksville.  FYI - the shoot is not about FR, it is to honor a truly wonderful Texas man.

Nice thread y'all have here.  I'm from a small town a couple of hours west of DFW on the edge of the desert....lol.

I joined TBR earlier today after finding myself zotted from FreeRepublic, for not bowing to the presumptive nominee.

A lot more peaceful here.....

Welcome!

Wylie, he said he was in the kitchen and all of a suden the roof caved in and water was coming in at a fast rate. Flooded the house. Now some of the roof is gone, they have huge fans in the place trying to dry it out.

We do believe in extreme weather out here.   **nononono*

Not a native myself (the wife is a native) but I have lived here since Dec. 1989. We used to live in Austin, and we currently reside just a ways north of there. Both of us very glad to be out of Goofytown!

Finding myself glad to be here on this board also.  ^-^

Austin is a challenge.

Two point plan for turning Austin from blue to red.

1. Cut funding for all UT programs except STEM majors.
2. Have the state legislature enact a law that makes Austin a must-carry (concealed or open) city for all adults.

I no longer live in Austin- moved to the Hill Country in 2011. The Obama signs at my neighbors did me in. Along with the traffic at the "Y" in Oak Hill.

I grew up not far from the "Y" in Oak Hill. I used to ride my bike there as a kid. Now I'm afraid to drive through Oak Hill in my car.  I moved from Austin to Marble Falls back in 1998 and have lived here ever since. Whereabouts in the Hill Country are you?

Just checking in with my old Texas FReepers.

Bigun told me about this place a few days ago, after discovering that I was a victim of JimRob going full-bleep and purging any pro-Cruz FReepers regardless of their membership longevity or posting decorum.

I wasn't very active on FR of late (just lurking and checking for news articles to post elsewhere.)  I probably won't be on here much either, because I'm too busy to spend much than occasional check ins.  But it is good to hear from some of the Texas FReepers that actually got off their keyboards and did a FReep or two.

I was put in some sort of FR timeout for doing nothing but stating my personal opinion without name-calling or other leftist tactics used by the Trump supporters.  I am done with this joke of a website and will never return. I was a member since 2000 and I am a consistent Constitutional Conservative with a strong mind who is not susceptible to joining a cult of personality. Enjoy your echo chamber. Enjoy watching Trump either getting shut out at the convention, throwing another temper tantrum and melting down on twitter or losing to Hitlery.

@DrewsDad is that Basil in your avatar pic?  Which event was that?
Yes, that's Basil pointing at the punk on a bike.  The Sarce is to her left and TxRangerette with the flag by the street.
@austingirl and @Gracey (possibly on the left)  and   @The Bat Lady   were there as well.

This was a 2001 Counter Protest to the False-Peaceniks protesting our action against the Taliban after the 9-11 attack.

The Texas board needs a dedicated weather thread, IMO
I'm not from Texas, but I'll gladly contribute forecasts. I've been looking to expand my forecasting outside my hometown.

I had to look Cove up; I don't believe I've ever heard of Cove.

Are you in the oil industry?  I'll bet Midland/Odessa are seeing some incredible changes after the most recent price dive.

My apologies, I used the military abbreviation for Copperas Cove.   Bad habit I have.

I'm not in the business.  My dad was/is in the business...he buys and sells Natural Gas.  Saw the ups and downs and decided to do something totally opposite.  So I went into radio...then the military.

Yeah it's really a roller coaster out there right now.  It would help if there was a coherent energy policy in this country and a Chief Executive that would reign in the EPA.  Until that happens there won't be a lot of stability in the Oil Business IMHO.

Say, @Sanguine  would the Texas State chapter topic be a good place to post news articles of local/state interest, such as articles about what The Lege might be up to when it's in session, or what silly thing the Austin City Council (or other city council) might be doing? I suspect this is the right place for such news articles, just want to make sure.  ^-^

@Bear_in_RoseBear , this would be a great place to post news articles of local/state interest.  Just go to the main part of the Texas board, and post away:  http://www.gopbriefingroom.com/index.php/board,106.0.html.

I'd love to know what the lege is doing.  It's very hard to do.

Thanks for the confirmation!  ^-^

Being close to Austin, I think a lot of state-related stuff out of the Legislature and the Governor's office gets reported by local media here that is not always picked up by local media in other cities. Things are fairly quiet now, as the Lege is not in session currently, and the next session doesn't begin until next January. But then, there's always goofy stuff coming out of the Austin Silly Council, like the current dust-up over regulation of Uber and Lyft.  Whatever is currently on the Silly Council's agenda can act like an indicator of the next cause that the leftists plan to push, since Austin's Council is so exceedingly far-left.

Basil, suffered a stroke in early January. It left her paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak. She's got very limited speech and her mental faculties are diminished. She spent many weeks in a therapeutic hospital but when it became apparent that her condition wouldn't improve, our family decided she'd be much happier at home. You could have been there, it was free and open to the public (subject to capacity controls).  Most nights you don't have to be a member to go.   Wednesday/Thursday is free and open to the public.  Fridays and Saturdays you might pay a $10 or so more than a member for a ticket, but you can go and don't have to come with a member or even know one.  Occasionally they will have shows that are members only, but that's not often.  And then there are the shows are de facto members only because members get first shot and they sell out before they are made available to the general public, like Willie Nelson.

That right there is grounds for having their Texas citizenship revoked.

I'd call it grounds for a false advertising lawsuit myself.

But then I hate lawyers nearly as much as paying full price for Shiner.  decisions, decisions....

Welcome M1078!

Someday, we'll have to get together a local TBR group to meet at the Gristmill or some place in the area.
At this point, I'm thinking end of June timeframe.

Heck., I think most of the conservatives in America are Texans (or at least Wannabe Texans--like the bumper sticker that says "I'm not a native Texan, but I got here as a fast as I could").

Hello, fellow Texans!
Is it just me, or does today seem like it is a little bit harder than normal to get motivaed.
Maybe it is the cloud cover.
Maybe just because it is Monday.
I seem to have a big case of "don't-wanna-do-nuthin" today.
I have to work anyway, and it seems like I have as much done as I normally do, just seems harder to do today.

The drizzly little rain was what bothered me (plus the high humidity this afternoon).  I got a free things done on my new truck (my avatar) getting it ready for parade season but really need to cut the grass.

Fresh meat here, just joined today. But a Texan since '69. Started out in the Panhandle and gradually relocated to the Metromess.

I was on FR last weekend listening to them gnash their teefuses about how poorly Trump gets treated over there. I could not keep my mouth shut so I started messing with them, they didn't appreciate it much and I went through a whole mess of them until they finally got tired of me refusing to shut up. I'm like that sometimes.

I have watched little old ladies who's only sin was posting how much they like Cruz and how they sent him $20 from their SocSec last month. And then I have watched a dozen of them at once tear those harmless little grannies limb from limb for speaking their truth. I hate bullies. I tried to tangle with several of them but they gang up, you can't defend yourself against a crowd, so I finally just stopped going to those threads. Until last weekend, first time in a couple of months, felt good, felt righteous.

Now I'm over here, didn't even know this place existed, but I'm glad y'all found me. I became a Texan when I was in the 8th grade and Coach Key made all of us in his Texas History class memorize, then recite before the entire class Travis' letter "To The People of Texas and all Americans in the world" he wrote from that little chapel down in Bexar. That changed my life. Gave me, a confused 14-yo, something to be proud of, and something to love a besides 15-yo girl named Alicia. I wonder whatever happened to that girl, she had really nice ... umm ... assets.

God Bless America, and God Bless Texas.

New guy here, west Houston suburbs, reporting for the first time.  Lurked on TOS for 16 years before I finally decided to join in discussions, then quickly decided I didn't like the sound and attitude of a Trump echo chamber.  Been lurking here for a few weeks and I've seen so many neighbors I decided to go public.

Not a native Texan, rather a native Tennessean, but I've been living here since '92, come to think of it just a bit longer than I lived in Tennessee.  Cousins of mine have ancestry here since before The Alamo, and I can see my family name on the San Jacinto monument, but I still prefer Bluegrass and George Dickel to Western Swing and Shiner Bock.  Nevertheless, when Texas finally does secede, I'll be joining up, wearing a coonskin cap.

I am a cyclist. And I absolutely hate squirrels, I want to exterminate the species. All squirrels must DIE!

One of my bicycles is an old Schwinn Paramount "fixed-gear" which means you can't coast, as long as you are in motion the cranks are turning. I've had squirrels try to jump through the front wheel and bounce off, but I always imagined it would chop the hell out of a squirrel, hence my moniker.

I just ran over a squirrel yesterday, hit the little monster pretty solid but he got up and ran away. Now, I did not attempt to run over the little bastid, he attacked me and there was nothing I could do. I'm just glad he didn't get tangled in the front wheel and face plant me on the pavement. I have a theory, a "radial-laced" front wheel is harder for them to get caught in because the only place between the spokes wide enough is right at the rim. So far I've been proven correct.

Squirrels, fuzzy-tailed rats!

Crazy thing. I have a beagle and a foxhound and they ignore the squirrels. I guess they just got used to them getting in the pecan tree and finally ignored them and gave up.
It is a completely different story when a possum comes around. All Hell breaks loose. I have to physically go get them back in. I'm not mad at them for it, though the neighbors may not care for it. They are just doing there job.

Hi y'all.
Sitting on the back porch in Sugar Land, drinking a Shiner.

I was thinking about a story a guy on the rodeo circuit told me.
I don't know if it's true or not, but the character of this man lead me to believe it could be true.
Here goes:

Our friend was coming back for Mexico and came up to the Rio Grande.
He said "Just to see what it's like, y'all let me out. I'm going to swim across and you can pick me up on the other side".
He got across, where he was met by border patrol, who told him he was under arrest for illegal entry into the United States.
He said, "Come on fellas, I am a citizen, I was just goofing off".
They said, they knew that. They told him he would have to come back in through the check point.
"No problem" he said, "My friends should be here any minute."
The agents smiled and said, "No,I don't think so" and pointed to the river.
He swam back to Mexico.
True or not, it's a good story.
It got a laugh out of me.

OK, I went through the Texas Welcome thread and made a list of everyone who responded to that thread, including the Louisianian and Floridian.

I added home places to those who had indicated that in the thread and plotted them on a Texas map.

Looks like somewhere SE of Waco, maybe along 35, would be the best place to meet.

@DrewsDad had suggested Walberg and that would be maybe the best place to meet, except for those in LA and Midland.  Midland isn't really close to anything except for Odessa.

I know there are other Texans on the board and I'll add them as I can.

Oh, and the purple stars mean it's just a very rough approximation of where they are and the red ones are a little more defined.

It may be more convenient for others in Central Texas to meet south of Austin.  I guess we can start a polling thread (if someone knows how to do that).

So, I'm glad to see so many Texans on this board.

Reminds me of a simple joke that fits so many of my peeps:

A Texan walks into a bar.

The bartender says, " You got any ID?"

The Texan says, "About what?"

I love it here and, God willing, will never live anywhere else.

 :amen:

Welcome to all and thanks to all for welcoming me.

We were heading to the Gristmill restaurant (in Gruene) for lunch today, but traffic was so bad we didn't have time before our event.

The event ended too soon to stick around for dinner.

We still need to get the CenTex "Briefers" together sometime.

I agree.   And,  traffic is a real consideration.

If y'all get together, I'd make the trip from Sugar Land, if it isn't on a Wednesday, or something like that.
We like to try to go to the Grist Mill Before a show at Gruene Hall when we can.

I only recognize some of your names, those of you who kept your freeper handles, and today it occurred to me that some of you others might be some Texas Freepers that have either been banned or signed off willingly and have no idea how concerned some of those you left behind are about you. I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that some of you may be freekitty, stevie_d64 (sp) and/or lentusgracculus ( I KNOW I butchered that one, sorry). If you are, please know that your friends are very concerned. If you're not, that concern is probably justified. Just hoping to reconnect and ease old friends' minds.

Has anybody as yet relayed how long your family heritage is of being a Texan?

My direct ancestor came to Texas in 1837 and later became mayor of a young Austin, Texas.

Am also a distant relative of Jim Bowie who came to Texas in 1830.  Some say I cannot claim him as he became a Mexican citizen.  Since he died at the Alamo fighting the Mexicans, I think I should be able to.

Am sure some will beat that.

I'll 'fess up, I don't have any Texas heritage, I only arrived here going on 27 years ago. My wife on the other hand is a San Antonio girl who has traced her Texas heritage back five generations on her mother's side, slightly less on her father's side (but that's due to trouble identifying people, not that they weren't in Texas.)

So you've got us beat!  ^-^

One of my ancestors (Hezekiah Faris) was at San Jacinto with Sam Houston. I live today on a part of the land that he was granted for his participation in that event.

He is buried a couple of miles from my house along with most of my ancestors on my mother's side of the family.

I wish we would re-initiate the habit of rewarding genuine heroes with parcels of land.  I like that practice.

When people ask me where I'm from, I tell them I'm not from anywhere.
Doesn't where are you from mean, where did you leave to arrive where you are now?

That doesn't apply to me as I never left Texas.  I was born a Texan and I have never left my Texas.
Wherever my travels take me, I always ask. What part of Texas is this?

I grew up in Southeast Houston one street north of Sims Bayou.
I now live just north of Hobby Airport and south of Sims Bayou, just a few mile from where I grew up.

Maybe.  I think of "where are you from" as meaning where were your formative years spent, what are do you most closely identify with?

For those more recent Texans who are not aware of the magazine 'Texas Highways':  It is an excellent compilation of day trips and other journeys on interesting places in Texas.  Lots of history, parks, roadways, restaurants.  Some are likely to be where you live that you never knew about.

I have been a subscriber for the past 35 years, including living on both US coasts and overseas.

I have even given a gift subscription to new Texans so they get quickly 'The Lay of the Land'.

The second most important part is that if you have to leave, how long it is before you can get back.

I worked elsewhere and it took 24 years to get back.  Will never leave again.

I traveled the world for a long time but never found anyplace I liked better than Texas!  Have no intention of ever leaving again except maybe for a short vacation in Alaska or something like that.

Pretty much the same story here.  Texas is the only place that feels like home.

That is the reason I kept the magazine subscription.  I saw so much of other places, I have to catch up with my home state.

It is mostly driving trips for me now.

One of the earliest of ancestors on my mom’s side of the family was Noah Smithwick. He wrote a pretty good book about his life in Texas … Evolution of a State or Recollections of Old Texas Days http://utpress.utexas.edu/index.php/books/smievo (http://utpress.utexas.edu/index.php/books/smievo). He did some work on that famous canon …  you know - that one that Texans dared the Mexicans to “Come and Take It”.

My dad’s side of the family got to Texas in the 1850s.

About 30+ yrs ago I lived on Detroit Street which wound from Broadway to Park Place, not far from "suicide circle", at the Gulf Freeway.
Pretty close to where you are describing.

On my father's side I can trace back 7 generations in Texas to Stephen F. Austin's Old 300.

My mother was born in NYC, met my father in Washington DC after WWII, and moved with my father back to rural central Texas in 1954. I cannot imagine what a culture shock that must have been for her.

That is a neat looking book by someone who apparently knew the ground well.  I plan on ordering one to read.

My dad's side had Gideon Lincecum, who got to Texas in 1835 and authored much written material as a noted naturalist along with his contemporary Charles Darwin.  http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/utcah/00119/cah-00119.html

Bet she found out, among other things, there are such things as mosquitos, BBQ and real cowboys.
