Title: My Forgotten New Wave 80s Thread... Will add songs as mood strikes me.
Post by: Sighlass on July 31, 2017, 06:46:28 pm
Posting in no order, today I fancied a song by Kissing the Pink, tomorrow or next week it be something completely different but still 80s (possible early 90s) rare stuff that most will not remember.

Kissing the Pink - Certain Things are Likely

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upItAgehTNY

Certain Things are Likely
Certain Things I Blame
Certain Things are Likely
They Hypnotise me, They hypnotise me.

Girl you know the ?? chair
You’re a ?? card??
On Her Feet
The White Sock There??
’Neath the Ground is Hard

What’s her mind on
What’s her mind on

Fishes in the Light she Sees??
Snaps another Card??
Couldn’t wave above her Head??
Sun it shines so Hard

What’s her mind on (X4)

Like falling in love

In this Race
Fever Face
Girl Stand on her Toes
China Blue
Look at You
Tattoo How it Grows

What’s your Mind On
What’s your Mind On

Health Shape Body Weight
Body Made of Steel
Push it Up, Drive it Hard
Drive it like a Wheel

Chorus repeat

Certain Things are Likely
Certain Things I Blame
Certain Things are Likely
They Hypnotise me, They hypnotise me

Drive it like a wheel
Body made of Steel
Sun it Shines so Hard
(they)Hypnotise me Hypnotise me

Certain Things I Blame
Certain Things I Own
Some are too Expensive
Help me Build a Throne
Buckle This Buckle That
Buckle All the Way
Certain Things are Likely

Like Falling in Love

In this Race
Fever Face
Girl Stand on her Toes
China Blue
Look at You
Tattoo How it Grows

Chorus:Certain Things are Likely
Certain Things I Blame
Certain Things are Likely
They Hypnotise me, They hypnotise me

Drive it like a wheel
Body made of Steel
Sun it Shines so Hard
(they)Hypnotise me Hypnotise me

This was an anti-war song I heard during college circa 1984... Needless to say during the Reagan years it didn't get much airplay, but I still love it.

There was some good music in the "New Wave" era. Disco had some. Donna Summer, ABBA, ec.

Police, Blondie, Culture Club, Tears for Fears, Spandau Ballet, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, George Michael, Pretenders, even Sade to name a few.

Some of this music, I failed to appreciate until several years later.

Love the era too... but figured everyone here knows the popular ones, I will just be posting the rarer gems I found over the years. So may not appeal to but a select few people, and that is ok.

If you know a really rare New Wave song, feel free to share it. Love finding new music.

It was a great Talking Heads song (there was a remix I really dug), I have the album in one of those cedar chests somewhere. Just like I have a couple of the Cars albums. Even a Devo album too. Yeah for some reason I ended up using 3 cedar chests to store my old albums. You don't want to try to lift one of them. I kind of put the "rare" label up to warn folks that what I was posting wasn't top 40 stuff. Kind of a way to take the sting off if they were disappointed in what I put up. I love most things 80s...

So songs like what is posted below don't get frowned upon.... I know it ain't gonna be everyone's cup of tea.

Man what a mess that was.  Uggg  Sad to see aging hippies and limousine libertines suddenly donned skinny ties, asymmetrical haircuts, polka dot cocktail dresses, and geometric makeup so they could more effectively wail in newfangled “music videos” before walls of flickering TV sets and electro-pumping drum machines.

Seriously, how could this not have lasted?

Some might wonder why I post songs in the HTTPS format instead of just HTTP which puts up the player on the page. My browser does not show the URLs of the regular Http posting, so in order to see songs people put up like that, I have to reply to the post to see the URL and then copy paste it in a new browser screen to play the video. Just a few people have this problem, but I have seen others complain about it so I just post https so the URL shows up for all (including myself). The problem is probable due to some privacy add-on I use, maybe it is in my browser. I don't know, but just thought I would say a few words on why I don't post links like most everyone else does.

In 1985 I heard this group while record shopping. I learned a new term that day... Dark Wave... But this little ditty verged on sweet and ethereal at times instead of the usual offerings of doom and gloom in that category. Anyway I still love it to this day...

Echo & the Bunnymen - Lips like Sugar

Echo and the Bunnymen - Lips like Sugar (especially the 12" remix) was just a work of magic. Would be hard to find anyone who loves the era that would argue against the song. I first heard the song on a compilation album (Just Say Yes)... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIaoaIwgoKk

Thanks for sharing @RoosGirl

Now your other song by "The Waterboys" is not exactly New Wave. But who care, they rocked ! I fell in love with the group with early songs they did called "Gala" and "December" back in 1983... The songs even had Christian references in them. Both of which made me a fan for life.

There was a music label out of England that was basically one fellow working out of his basement. The man had an exceptional ear for new music though, and managed to sign some of the best underground groups around. One such group was "The Essence"... The Essence was a Dutch group that sounded exactly like "The Cure". Formed in 1984 they were unfortunate in that Midnight Music signed them. Because Midnight Music just didn't have the money to promote his bands. All this underground talent and no capital to put it in front of the world. I happened to be one of the rare few that actually got first run copies of their albums before Midnight filed bankruptcy.

They have since had their music purchased and re released thankfully. They have now found a pretty strong following on YouTube. I love about 6 of their songs.

The Essence - Ice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4swvL2m2Ho4

Another group on the Midnight Music label was "Sad Lovers & Giants"...

They were a little more rock oriented but still have strong New Wave vibes...

I collected a couple of albums from them also, but didn't get but a couple.

Songs like Glint and Imagination were strong songs in themselves.

Here is one song by them

Yeah, I didn't really think that Waterboys fit exactly, but that is such a great song and to me still has a bit of that feel.  But, IMO 80's new wave music is an oddity because so much of it got a lot of radio play alongside the more pop and rock stuff.  I mean, things that I think of as pop a lot of people would categorize as 80's new wave.  Like So Alive by Love & Rockets, that just squeaked into the 80s. Or Red Skies At Night by The Fixx.  Some Depeche Mode stuff.  Some Tears For Fears stuff, though generally what did not get air play. Etc.

3 Classic 80s songs...

The Icicle Works song "Whisper to a Scream"... had it all... vocals, guitar, bass, and in my opinion one of the best drummers that was allowed to actually cut loose. I didn't know Soho had done a cover version of it for that scary movie (Scream), it was different but still prefer the original. A friend of mine in college loaned me the cassette (we swapped driving back and forth to college for weekends). Loved the whole thing. Had to get it cd years later, my cassette version had had the lick.

Thanks for sharing.

It is all good. Hoping some of my tunes click with others is what it is all about. I lurk some times in the other music threads, and there is no doubt they know their stuff from mostly different eras from me. Shows me just how limited my spectrum really is. But from early 80s to 1994 I just seem to crave the music for some reason. The feeling when you find that one rare song that clicks with you is like a drug that can be relived time and time again. All my boys seem to like the era too, but in my search for that next song, I sure dig through a lot of poo songs. But it is worth it even if I have to dig through 300 songs to find that one gem. Occasionally someone will throw out a song that was top 40 that I somehow missed (or overlooked). In my quest, oddly the one often right in my face gets overlooked. Funny how life is.

I say throw them out there and even if I have heard it, odds are I love it too and it makes for a good memory.

BTW... son liked your New Order video. He said it was strange, but he watched it all the way through.

Good song by all from 10,000 Manics to Psychedelic Furs to the Human League to The Fixx to the smooth Bryan Ferry to The Fixx to Information Society to crooner Peter Murphy to Big Country.

I could tell a story on each, but perhaps the closest to my heart was the Scottish group Big Country. They fascinated me perhaps the most. They were an obsession for me and a few fellow friends here in the states. So bad were we smitten that we used to put up advertisements in record collector magazines (Gold Mine mag) for pen pals and such to swap rare materials we found. Meet a bunch of fellow fans and we even for a few years produced a fanzine (unofficial) for the group called "All of Us". It was named after a B-side song from the song you linked Roo.

I know Duran Duran is not a forgotten group by any means, but I don't think this song got the attention it deserved compared to some of their more pop style hits.  This is not the official video since it is not at all family appropriate.

Great Songs.... General Public to Haircut 100...

I must admit I had never heard the Robyn Hitchcock song before, I had in passing heard other songs by him, but this one alluded me. Sweet. Thanks for hooking me up there.

Good to have you with us @Mad Max .... throw out some songs if the mood strikes ya. Good or bad (or Ugly), we take em all. Welcome to The Briefing Room. P.S. @dfwgator  doesn't bite, had his teeth removed last year, and dentures just don't suit him.  88finger point 88finger point  9999what

"I Ran" By Flock of Seagulls

[Verse 1]
I walked along the avenue
I never thought I'd meet a girl like you
Meet a girl like you

[Verse 2]
With auburn hair and tawny eyes
The kind of eyes that hypnotize me through
Hypnotize me through

[Bridge]
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
Couldn't get away

[Verse 3]
A cloud appears above your head
A beam of light comes shining down on you
Shining down on you

[Verse 4]
The cloud is moving nearer still
Aurora borealis comes in view
Aurora comes in view

[Bridge]

[Verse 5]
Reached out a hand to touch your face
You're slowly disappearing from my view
Disappearing from my view

[Verse 6]
Reached out a hand to try again
I'm floating in a beam of light with you
A beam of light with you

[Outro]
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I ran all night and day
And I ran, I ran so far away
I just ran, I couldn't get away

I do not know The English Beat!

Their big hit was "Save it for Later"... it rocked and rocked some more. They were also well know in the SKA scene.

I like it!

I was born in very late 1976, so I was pretty young when a lot of this music came out.  Probably even most of it I didn't catch the first time, and we didn't have a lot of money to spend on casettes and DVDs.  I have been given records, but I don't think I was ever old enough to buy one myself before cassettes and then CDs were popular.  My first cassette was Tears For Fears and my first CD was Information Society, that I bought with my own money.

Dave Wakeling gets a call from Pete Townshend and David Gilmour because they can't figure out the tuning for "Save It For Later" and Pete wanted to perform it in concert.   Imagine getting that call.

"One Step Beyond"-Madness

(Hey you, don't watch that,
Watch this!
This is the heavy heavy monster sound
The nutsiest sound around
So if you've come in off the street
And you're beginning to feel the heat
Well listen buster
You'd better to start to move your feet
To the rockin'est, rock-steady beat
Of Madness
One step beyond!)

(One step beyond!...)

"Don't You Wan't Me" by Human League

You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up
And turned you around, turned you into someone new
Now five years later on you've got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don't forget it's me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back there too
Don't, don't you want me?
You know I can't believe it
When I hear that you won't see me
Don't, don't you want me?
You know I don't believe you
When you say that you don't need me
It's much to late to find
When you think you've changed your mind
You'd better change it back or we will both be sorry
Don't you want me, baby?
Don't you want me, oh?
Don't you want me, baby?
Don't you want me, oh?

I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew I'd find a much better place
Either with or without you
The five years we have had have been such good times
I still love you
But now I think it's time I live my life on my own
I guess it's just what I must do
Don't, don't you want me?
You know I can't believe it
When I hear that you won't see me
Don't, don't you want me?
You know I don't believe you
When you say that you don't need me
It's much to late to find
When you think you've changed your mind
You'd better change it back or we will both be sorry
Don't you want me, baby?
Don't you want me, oh?
Don't you want me, baby?
Don't you want me, oh?

This is a 80s classic.

I found this kind of interesting.  It's Blue Monday, by New Order, remade by a group called Orkestra Obsolete, which I haven't heard of before, with instruments from the 1930s.
