You Hate It From Barack Obama. But You Love It From Donald Trump.
By Rick Wilson
For the Journal IJReview

I’ve come to realize that the Obama Cult and the Trump Cult are two sides of the same personality-cult coin. The cognitive dissonance between what the Trump faction hated about Obama and what they love about Donald is so far beyond ironic it would take a team of trained linguists and semioticians decades to decode.

But I’ll try.

You hated Barack Obama’s cult-like followers, with their mindless stares of adoration, their impervious barrier between emotion and reason, and their instant fury when confronted with the facts about his record, his history, or his philosophy.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated Obama’s shallow, facile rhetoric, with its hollow promises and loose, lowest-common-denominator word-vomit disconnected from any real policy.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated how Obama was gleefully lying to credulous low information voters, filling them with empty promises of economic prosperity that would never come, based on plans that could never be achieved.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated how Obama lied about his positions on single-payer healthcare, gay marriage, gun control, and abortion to get elected, knowing that if he ever revealed the truth about what he believed that he’d be unelectable.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated how Obama rode the wave of constant attention from the mainstream media into office, and how they played along with his game, draining the life out of every other candidate by describing him as an inevitable juggernaut, an unstoppable political force, and a game-changer who was tapping into something deep and powerful in American political life.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated how Obama’s naive ignorance of the real and brutal world of international affairs was papered over by his hollow promises to make the world respect the United States again.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated Obama’s casual disdain for people who weren’t from a major city where, you know, all the rich, smart, educated, liberal people like him live.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated Obama’s elite credentialism, and how he yielded his Harvard and Columbia degrees to browbeat his aspiring-class opponents from outside the meritocracy, and how he used them to cow an already docile press.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated that smug, arrogant, sneering affect that took hold the moment he thought the cameras weren’t looking.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated Obama’s cadre of sleazy, weird, creepy advisers, with their combination of over-the-edge ideological fervor and their stench of petty corruption.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated Obama’s support for bail-outs, too-big-to-fail, and big, taxpayer-funded government intervention in dying industries.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated his comfy alliance with Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the odious Clinton crime family.

But you love it from Trump.

You hated his cavalier disdain for private property rights.

But you love it from Trump.

Everything that set your teeth on edge, and raised your hackles and made you loathe Barack Obama is there in Donald Trump. Every aspect of the con game Obama played on America in 2008 – the obsessive focus on one base issue (for Obama the war in Iraq, for Trump, Mexicans), the cult-like obsession, the instant attacks on apostates, the willful ignorance of his history and his beliefs – is present in Trump.

Everything you despised in Obama is there.

But you love it from Trump.

Which section of the Constitution empowers the President to determine where sites for plants of American companies, will be located? Ford, Nabisco?

Or sites of foreign firms will be located, i.e. Fiat's Chysler, VW, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes, Unilever, ad infinitum?

*I grew up watching my grandfather (born 1896) eat Shredded Wheat because he owned Nabisco stock.

Luis,

I said here on numerous occasions that after having to put up with the A-hole Barack Hussein Obama for 8 years, that it's time we get one of our own.

Let's see how the Democrats like that.

We may have a Republican House and Senate that refuses to go along with a President Donald Trump.  Should be interesting to watch.

So we now want a President that's bad for the nation and ignores the Constitution but has an "R" next to his name.

We have evolved.

As those who see haters in action know, Trump doesn't support protectionism or tariffs, just trade on equal footing.  Most Republicans in D.C. and those who support them are part of the Kruschev's "Sell The Rope Cabal".  They claim to care about the republic but their actions show otherwise.
It's quite instructive to see who's cover has been "blown".

Calling opposition "haters" is what liberals do. Can we try not to coopt their language and tactics and to then turn around and claim we're somehow different and better than them?

No President has the Constitutional power to "slap a tariff" (I think that's the phrase he used) on anyone. That power is granted to Congress.

You can't both claim you're for free trade and support the idea of governments interfering with trade.

No, the GOP is now "Good Old Protectionism"

Contemporary "conservatism" is severely under the influence of the entertainment gurus, too.

Make me laugh, make me cry, but don't stick to any particular principles any more, okay?

To see a quarter to a third of the GOP reduced to a cult of personality is really truly sad.

I had no idea there were so many low information, emotionally-driven Republican voters.  But, I guess there are dopes across the political spectrum, willing to succumb to vapid demagoguery.

There's free trade and then there is what the United States is engaged in.  These guys ain't paying sticker price.  They are paying sticker + undercoat + pin striping + extended warranty + whatever else they want to put on the price of the vehicle.

I gotta agree with the haters on this one. Tariffs are a baaaaad idea.
What needs to be done is to improve the conditions in this country and we all know how that's done.
The answer is not to impose another tax. That's just more money for the government to waste, and it won't work.

I'm not for tariffs.  I am for markets open both ways.  I'm also for a currency that is based upon "global" conversion, not the whim of a manufacturing powerhouse.

Isn't the thinking that the FICA taxes collected from illegal workers paychecks drawn on phony social security numbers, helps keep SS solvent?

Whatever it is, it is a "tax" we brought upon ourselves by creating a socialist state to accommodate these immigrants.  Blaming them is like blaming Trump for taking advantage of a tax loophole.

If we want to curtail illegal immigration, we can easily do it by getting rid of the magnet of socialism.  Conversely, increasing protectionism and erecting more barriers to entry will have the effect of promoting and protecting socialism, an unintended consequence we hardly ever talk about.

Disclaimer: As a legal immigrant who waited in line in a Communist country for a decade while being verbally abused by teachers and classmates alike who knew that my family had applied to leave the country, I object to illegal immigration. I just like to debate issues based on facts, not memes

It's not the "thinking", it's the fact that there are nearly a trillion dollars in the IRS's Earnings Suspense File.

The "hidden cost" of illegal immigration is somewhat of a myth. The equally "hidden" benefits (according to some economists (not Paul Krugman) tend to either equal out any costs, or even create a surplus. It's difficult to calculate the savings in staple grocery items to the public being generated by the lower wages earned by farm workers.

I was wondering about how you could possibly calculate the net cost or net benefit considering all factors.
It would be someone's best guess.

I do know this. I replaced the soffits and gutters on my house. I got 2 bids, one was union and one was not. The workers were all south of the border types.
I let you guess which bid was 50% higher.

Well, sort of.

DISCLAIMER:   When the unemployment rate was 5 percent during GWB's terms, that was considered FULL EMPLOYMENT.  The true rate is over 15 percent today.  Let's say, I've evolved when Americans go without jobs and illegals take them.

That said.....

I hired a general contractor who was a friend of mine.  He had two work crews of illegal Hispanic workers in the remodeling trades.

Got to know the men....their teenage-children delivered flyers for me at $10. per hour.  This was back in 2002-2005.

I ate dinner at their homes, and am considered a friend today...even though I'm out of the business (retired).

Always had a soft spot in my heart for those Hispanics that came here and refused government welfare.  They had jobs, they had leases, they bought homes, they raised children.

They're just as American as you or me.

So, basically, you're for the oppression of pseudo-slavery by allowing people to live a lawless life in America just so people can have cheap lettuce?

They're here because life here is better than any options they have there. They can leave at any time, so the pseudo-slavery thing is just hyperbole.

Back in the '70s American Sugar used to bring in cutters from Haiti for the sugar harvest. The cutters came with their families and were provided with wages, housing, schooling for their kids, clothing, food and medical care (including dental).

They didn't make a lot and the houses weren't something that you and I would find acceptable, but it was better wages than they could get in Haiti and better housing. The other things were icing on the cake.

They went back to Haiti after season and had enough money to support themselves and their family until the next harvest.

Groups of concerned citizens began protesting the "slave-like life" these cutters had, and eventually AS got tired of the bad press. They mechanized the harvest and the cutter never came back.

Thanks to those citizens, the cutters lost things that weren't available to them in Haiti.

Insofar as living a lawless life, I'm all for finding a remedy for that. It's the rest of you guys that want to keep them living that lawless life.

And no one minds expensive lettuce until lettuce gets expensive. Then everyone's pissed.

As has been quite readily shown lately, contemporary "conservatism" portrayed by Republicans in American politics, is less and less intellectually consistent.

The stool sits on very wobbly legs, social, economic and national security.

A lot of rock-solid old line conservatives want little to do with the nativism, for example. The idea of decades whereby the 14th Amendment gave citizenship to people, only to have some today claim that citizenship could be retroactively revoked by executive order, if only we elect Trump.

Our constitution does disallow "Ex Post Facto" laws, so that would be in principle "against the Constitution," in case anybody is left that cares.

It is liberals who have always based their 'principles' on emotion.  Conservatives have traditionally been thoughtful, and resisted the cult of personality.

That is no longer true, as it is emotion driving the Trump cult, and not reason.

They're here because life here is better than any options they have there.

Well, lets look at this another way.
They are here because they would not stand up for their country and their children and their future and allowed their religion and criminals turn their country into a crap hole.
If those 11/22 million Hispanics went back to Mexico or where ever and fought to clean up their country, I guarantee they would win and would have a shot at making their version of nirvana.
I am not against anyone because of their heritage so don't go there but I am opposed to what their presence is doing to this country and is the primary excuse for not securing our borders from those that are here for other than honorable intent.

It is liberals who have always based their 'principles' on emotion.  Conservatives have traditionally been thoughtful, and resisted the cult of personality. That is no longer true, as it is emotion driving the Trump cult, and not reason.

I think you're missing what's going on here.  This is  more an eruption of the fury that's been building over the past eight years rather than a cult of personality.  Remember, the fury has been not only with Obama but also with the behavior of our esteemed political party.  Any other GOP candidate could have ignited this spark, but for whatever reason, no one else did.

I think the "thoughtful"  principle driving Trump's popularity comes from deep inside the gut and can be expressed in one simple word:   "ENOUGH!!"

But, rest assured the GOP will return to the lofty tradition of "thoughtfulness"---and in November 2016 they will once again bring a knife to a gunfight.

What makes you think that those of us who find Trump completely unacceptable as a conservative candidate, are not equally frustrated with the impotence of the GOP 'leaders?'

The assumption that opposing Trump, who is NOT conservative, is falling in line with the GOP is ridiculous.

It is precisely because Trump does NOT support the fundamental principles of conservatism, in addition to his bullying and call for an even more imperial presidency, that I oppose him.

Those who are cheering for him are either not listening to him, or really do want a 'Republican' dictator.

I have had "ENOUGH" of dictators, so I do not support Trump.

As is Donald Trump.

We have a better shot at smaller government with someone other than Trump.

We have a far more likely possibility of another bully-dictator on 'our side' if he's elected.

I don't want our own dictator.  Ergo, I don't want Trump.

I find "angry" a bit condescending.  Buchanan and Keyes, angry.  Trump resonates with blue collar people.  The meat and potatoes crowd.  Salt of the earth Americans.

It wasn't meant to be condescending at all.  I myself am angry at establishment politics and I am neither ashamed of it or afraid to admit it.  I haven't (yet?) jumped the shark as far as Trump is concerned, but neither am I necessarily antagonistic toward him or his supporters.

Of course I do.

It's big government their way, or big government the Republican way.

That's my point here.

Just because some of us don't want another liberal bully in the WH (Trump) doesn't mean we support what the Republican party has been doing or not been doing.

The idea that everyone who hates big government embraces Trump is just poppycock.

It's precisely because I am a small government conservative that I reject him.

I understand.

It does present a problem though that conservatives are split on Trump. I've listened to conservative right radio for decades and each side presents good arguments. There is a bit of cognitive dissonance in Republican circles these days and it's all Trump's doing. Imagine how he'll shake up the bureaucracy once he's in office. Not predicting, just speculating.

That's an interesting speculation, but at what cost?  Our conservative principles down the drain?  Our longing for a smaller government washed away by a guy who thinks he's just going to tell people what to do and they'll do it?

The reason, I posit, that there is a split among conservatives is that there are a number who are just so angry that the fact that Trump is yelling at people makes them feel good.  But in feeling good, they are, I maintain, sacrificing the basic principles of conservatism because Trump doesn't believe in them.

Again.......... feelings are not what is supposed to drive conservatism.  But that's what's happening right now, and it's not a good sign.

ML you may think, but you think in a very narrow, ever-shrinking box.  You are unable to recognize an organic political movement when it hits you upside the head.  Instead of trying to understand the origins, magnitude, goals and sheer power of this phenomenon--you're trying to kill it because it doesn't fit your mold.   This is not, IMO, "thinking'.  This is stagnating.

And as to my "hostile, condescending" response-- well "hostile" is a bit too emotional a reaction for my taste.  But my reply to you sure was condescending.  I'm actually relieved you "got" that.  But come on, ML--this cannot be the first time--or the 100th time--your "debate" style has earned you a healthy dose of condescension; so please lighten up on the indignation.

Didn't you used to be a nice person?  I was sure I remembered you as a thoughtful, kind man....  Must have been someone else..

As for 'stagnating'............  The vast majority of conservatives who haven't jumped on the dictator for President bandwagon are not 'thinking,' but 'stagnating?'  Stagnating in loving our country and its constitution?  Stagnating in expecting character in our Presidential candidates?  Stagnating in thinking that someone representing us and running for the presidency should at least share a few of our conservative values?

If standing on the Constitution and on ethical principles is stagnation, and if expecting decency and character in a President is stagnation, then I'll gladly wear the label, and endure the insults that you so drippingly shower upon me.

I'll consider it a red badge of courage.

This is the second time in 24 hours that a Trump fan has resorted to very personal attacks on me and chosen not to respond to the substance of my posts.  One must presume that it's because there IS no response to Trump's lack of conservatism, so ad hominems are all they have.

Actually no.  It's a "Jeb Fish".  You are shilling for Jeb.  I'm sure you have your reasons to push your agenda.

Everyone has their favorite candidate at this point in the campaign.  The important bit is to be able to coherently explain *WHY* your preferred candidate is the best one.  If the argument for the candidate fails to win anyone, then either the candidate or the poster isn't doing a very good job of it.

That's how opinions and views on the candidates are formed.

Personally, I don't think Jeb is suited for President.  He's got a good record as Governor, but he doesn't really seem to have any desire to be President.  He comes across as another Fred Thompson, who didn't really want the job... but ran because the GOP asked.

That, and I really don't like the message sent with the possibility of three Bush Presidents in one lifetime.  I can wave off two from one family in one lifetime... but no more.

But Luis makes a good argument that voters SHOULD look at.  (I just think that there are better choices, like Rubio)

---

The problem with Trump is twofold.  His behavior, views on government, and his personality... *AND* his supporters.  The only argument that his supporters give as to why anyone should look at Trump is that "We're pissed off!!11!11!11!1!!11  RAAAAAAAWR!!!  BURN IT ALL DOWN!"

And that's just anarchy.

I don't know about that.  I admired Sarah Palin for quite a while, and when I was working on the uninspired McCain campaign, it was only when Palin was chosen as VP nominee that there was any fire in the campaign at all.   (By 2012, I no longer thought she was a viable candidate for anything).

But I do agree that there is something weird going on here with Trump followers.  Something weirdly irrational that doesn't bode well for conservatism.

That's the first thing you've said that made any sense.

The rest has been drivel....

How weird it is to have a seemingly decent man, Right_in_Virginia, build up a deep personal hostility toward me without my ever having said anything about him at all.  It just goes to show you that the internet does strange things to otherwise decent people.  I remind him, apparently, of a teacher he had that he clearly didn't like, and though there is no parallel with me and this other person, Right has decided he's going to insult me into silence.  I will not, however, cease and desist from saying what I believe, nor from defending conservative principles, and I especially will not be cowed by some stranger who has some bizarre chip on his shoulder.

  This is a stunning display of self-absorption.

I find you annoying.  And sanctimonious.  Oh, and on a few occasion flat out wrong.   Nothing more nothing less.

Well, until now.  Because now I'm seeing you as a little nuts in that frightening, clinical way and you're starting to scare the hell out of me .

Get some fresh air!  Find a playmate!  Read a book!  Anything -- go DO anything else.

But above all, put me on "Ignore".

I've placed you on ignore.  Go scare someone else.

I'm not putting you on ignore.

I've never said a single thing that should have offended you, and yet you are whining about me, attacking me, and making yourself look really petty.

I have no idea what's wrong with you, but I do know whatever it is has nothing in the world to do with me.

You have constructed a 'reality' that does not exist, and have chosen to allow that imaginary world to make you angry at something that also doesn't exist.

As I said before.......... I used to respect you, and think you were one of the good guys.  I was wrong.

I don't know what happened (I suspect it was before Trump, but that Trump has exacerbated it), but something is seriously awry and I hope you get better.

btw, I have an amazingly diverse and healthy life with lots of friends, and amazingly loving husband and family, a great profession, and a Lord who loves me unconditionally, and forgives me for thinking more of myself than I ought.

I wish you well, and I refuse to put you on Ignore, but am glad you've put me there because your anger at me personally is very unhealthy.

This is the weirdest experience I have had in a very long time.  Blindsided by someone whom I have NEVER offended, and then put on ignore by the same person because he just can't stand me....... and I 'scare' him.

Just weird.

But an appropriate ending to my Trump discussions.

I think my point was proven in spades.....

At this point in time, I favor Donald Trump over EVERY other declared candidate running.  If he's the nominee, I'll gladly campaign and vote for him.

But I'll never stop loving you, MusicLady!   :patriot:  I love your style, manner of decorum and your mind.  Not necessarily in that order.

My feeling weren't bruised.  Your last reply did come a little too close to crazy town for my comfort....but my feelings are intact.

And women, in the main, are no more stupid than men in the main ---  so I've no need to check with ONC (nothing personal).

ML, I stand by my stated opinions.  And rest assured that gender had nor has anything to do with them.

Ciao for now.  Enjoy your evening.

Nothing crazy about it.  Just an observation based on your words.  Perhaps you should choose them more carefully if you don't want to be perceived as ultra-sensitive and, well, kinda moody......

And of course, women are not more stupid than men.  But onc took a nasty swipe at us last night, so that's why I brought him up.  Two irrational hits in 24 hours on this forum is quite unusual.

Especially from someone like you, whom I have never, ever said an unkind word to, nor had a negative thought about until you broadsided me today.

And I will have a good evening.  About to watch a DVD with my adoring and adorable husband.

Hope you have a good evening too.

Strong and articulate women often intimidate men, DC.  (And obviously some other women as well).

I want you to know how much I appreciate (most of) the men on this forum who have a deep respect for us.

I don't think you have any idea how much it means to be respected.  I love you for that, my friend.
