Excellent choices, DCPatriot, and I am quite glad you started a thread devoted to show tunes.

For my first contribution I am going all the way back to the 50s and this piece from "Carousel" a song I not only enjoy for itself but which also brings back pleasant memories for me as did the Tommy Edwards' songs you added. And, yes, that is a very young Shirley Jones (Julie).

A thread right up my alley! I'm a total musical theater geek and grew up hearing Rogers & Hammerstein, Lerner & Lowe and all of the other classics like "Showboat," "Oliver!" and "Kismet." Love the early Lloyd-Weber stuff too.

I can't post anything on here right now, but my absolute favorite is "Man of La Mancha." I even had a cat I named Dulcinea.  (The lyrics to that song are so beautiful.)

Love this thread!

all of the other classics like ..."Kismet."

Ah, glad you mentioned that since my next selection is from that show. I already posted it once as an instrumental but this is the version from the movie.

Incidentally, in line with some other comments elsewhere, it's now hard to believe about 60 years later, but this song was once the most popular in the USA, #1 on the hit parade as we say.

Those singing are Vic Damone & Ann Blyth.

Doris Day's rendition of "They Say It's Wonderful" from "Annie Get Your Gun." The video includes a montage of male actors with whom she made movies. There are quite a few, I had no idea she made so many films, and wait until you see who is at (about) 57 seconds.

And MANY thanks for the " Man of La Mancha" posts.  The music from that gives me goosebumps.  In a good way.

Not a great song but taken in context very amusing, and Gwen Verdon gives an impeccable performance. From "Damn Yankees", "Whatever Lola Wants".

Excellent stuff, EC. I do wonder, however, how the woman on the left (in blue) can possibly walk around like that with those heels. But that's not the only question I have when it comes to women. Perhaps Professor Higgins can best explain my dilemma when it comes to the fairer sex:

Ok, I will confess up front this is not directly connected to our topic but right after I posted my last from "My Fair Lady" I checked Facebook and my eldest daughter had posted this. It seemed like such an amazing, and amusing, coincidence I add it here.

What I loved about the movie was the minimalist sets, making it feel almost like you were seeing it on stage.  Loved the movie.

But I saw it in 2001 in NYC on stage and absolutely loved that production as well.  The cast was amazing.

I saw it on Broadway, too... and it was great!  I normally am not a fan of Broadway plays turned movie, this was one of the rare exceptions for me.

I can name only a handful of Broadway shows that I personally think translated to movies well and "Chicago" is one of them.

"The Sound of Music" is another one (the scenery alone made that spectacular and they kept all but one of the songs intact.)

"The King and I" and "My Fair Lady" were decent adaptations, as was "West Side Story."

But so many of them cut key songs ("Camelot" and "Brigadoon" are two) or didn't cast well.  I always prefer seeing those shows on stage.

One of my favorite feelings in the world is sitting in a theater just as the lights are going down and the Overture is starting... ^-^

I would add Carousel to the list. On the other hand I don't think Oklahoma translated to the screen as well as it did on stage.

Anything from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA or the stage version of EVITA.

And this from LI'L ABNER..

THE COUNTRY'S IN THE VERY BEST OF HANDS!

Them city folks and friends
Are pretty much alike
Though they ain't used to living in the sticks
We don't like stone or cement
But we is in agreement
When we get started talking politics

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands
The best of hands

The treasury says the national debt
Is climbing to the sky
And government expenditures
Have never been so high
It makes a fellow get a
Gleam of pride when they decide
To see how our economy expands
The country's in the very best of hands

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands
The best of hands

You oughtta hear the senate
When their drawing up a bill
Where asses and dimwits are crowded in each conisil (sp.)
Such legal terminology
Would give your heart a thrill
There's phrases there that no one understands
The country's in the very best of hands

The building boom, they say
Is getting bigger every day
And when I asked a feller
How could everybody pay
He come up with an answer
That made everything okay
Supplies are getting greater than demands
The country's in the very best of hands

Don't you believe them congressmen
And senators are dumb
When they run into problems
That is tough to overcome
They just declare something
They call the moritorium
The upper and the lower house dismans
The country's in the very best of hands

Fox Motors is connected to the nominee
The nominee's connected to the treasury
When he ain't connected to the treasury
He sits around on his thigh bone

He sits around in his fancy car
This big congressional parking lot
Just sits around on the you know what
'Cause there they calls it their thigh bone

Them bones, them bones
Gonna rise again
Gonna excercise a franchise again
Gonna tax us up to our eyes again
When he gets them off of their thigh bone

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands
The best of hands

The farm bill should be
Eight-nine percent paroty
And all their fellow recommends
It should be mound at three
But eighty, ninety-five percent who cares about decree
It's paroty that no one understands
The country's in the very best of hands

Them GOP's and democrats
Each hates the other one
They's always criticizing
How the country should be run
But neither tell the public
What the others gone and done
As long as no one knows
Where no one stands
The country's in the very best of hands

They sits around and just place their ass
Where folks in congress has always sat
Just sits around on their excess bag
Up there they calls it their thigh bone

They sits around till they starts to snore
Jumps up and hollers
I has the floor
Then sits right down where they sats before
Up there they calls it their thigh bone

Them bones, them bones
Gonna cross again
So dignified and so wise again
While the budget doubles in size again
When it gets them off of their thigh bone

The country's in the very best of hands
The best of hands
The best of hands

The money that they taxes us
That's known as revenues
They compound up collaterals
Subtracts the residue

Don't worry about the principal
And interest it encrues
They're shipping all that stuff to foreign lands
The country's in the very best of hands

I enjoyed this thread, so I am back at it.

From Bye Bye Birdie, "I've got a lot of living to do"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AW-kJZkhbI

I saw this play when it was first staged and think the stage version was superior because the director of the movie version dragged this number out a little too long and the choreography is not the best. But otoh Ann Margret never looked so good and who knew Bobby Rydell could move like that? Jesse Pearson is outstanding as the sleazy Conrad Birdie.

"Bye, bye Birdie" again. This particular number became a pop hit as I recall. I ought also note I chose this video because, even though the sound quality is not the highest, it better captures the stage version than did the movie, and it includes some of the dialogue surrounding the song which is pretty funny.
