Social media traffic to top news sites craters
Sara Fischer

Traffic referrals to the top global news sites from Meta's Facebook and X, formerly Twitter, has collapsed over the past year, according to data from Similarweb.

Why it matters: Website business models that depended on clicks from social media are now broken.

What's happening: Regulatory pressure and free speech concerns have pushed tech giants to abandon efforts to elevate quality information, leaving the public more susceptible to misinformation ahead of the 2024 election.

Meanwhile, news companies are scrambling to find business solutions while simultaneously fighting to protect their work in the AI era.

Seems the study (liberal Reuters) took a look at most every major foreign market but the results in the US didn't exactly follow the trend of most the rest of the world (as the headline suggests).

The report (160 pages PDF) still shows the USA consuming more news than others and in some aspects growing (social media).

Compare that to say Canada (where the English population is growing jaded of liberal news, compared to French speaking). (chart below)

Sprinkled in the report was all kind of things that spelled out their hatred of conservatives... There is "Covid trust rebounds" (news trust according to them went up due to covid coverage)... and went down during Trump Presidential days. The report basically is a chart of their grasp to control what people watch (and just plain control people). They want you to be spoon fed their propaganda and like it.
