Progressive Democrat and Cook County commissioner Brandon Johnson was elected Chicago mayor on Tuesday night after defeating moderate Paul Vallas in a runoff election.
The Associated Press called the tight race for Johnson as the leftist held a narrow lead of just under 16,000 votes with all precincts reporting in the hotly contested race that focused on surging crime in the Windy City.
“It’s clear based on the results tonight our city is divided,” Vallas told supporters around 9:30 p.m. in a concession speech. ...
Vallas, former Chicago Public Schools CEO, campaigned as a center-leaning Democrat, with promises to be tougher on crime — winning him an endorsement from the Chicago police union. ...
Johnson, meanwhile, was backed by the Chicago teacher’s union and several progressive members of congress, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and “Squad” member Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.).
The dividing issue in the race has been their differing stances on crime. ...
As former Wisc. Gov. Walker posted on Facebook, will the last person to leave Chicago please turn out the lights?

Brandon Johnson wins Chicago mayoral contest, replacing former Mayor Lori Lightfoot
The pair of candidates spent the weekend trying to woo over undecided voters ahead of Tuesday’s election
By Houston Keene | Fox News
The Windy City decided on its new mayor Tuesday after a tight race between two blues, with a progressive, Bernie Sanders-endorsed Democrat taking the keys to the Chicago mayor's office.
Progressive Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson defeated his moderate opponent, former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas, to take the Chicago mayor’s race, replacing outgoing Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who came in third before the runoff.
Vallas garnered the support of the Chicago police union and major business groups while Johnson got the backing of Chicago's teacher's union.

Chicago Just Traded Lori Lightfoot For Another Socialist Mayor
Jennifer Van Laar
3–4 minutes
Hope sprang eternal when Chicago’s destroyer-in-chief Lori Lightfoot didn’t make the runoff in this year’s mayoral contest, and when a candidate who’d declared that “public safety is a human right” won the plurality of votes in the primary. Could Chicago’s voters have really woken up and realized that when you vote for a socialist/marxist/America hater, you end up living in an un-American hellhole?
Tuesday night’s election results confirmed that Chicago’s voters are either still completely asleep at the wheel, or they enjoy living in a broke, crime-ridden city. Or, perhaps they subscribe to Chelsea Handler’s theory that true communism hasn’t really been tried yet, so if we just increase the communism/socialism utopia will finally be achieved. Voters selected Bernie Sanders-endorsed Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson over moderate Democrat Paul Vallas, who was endorsed by Chicago’s police union.
As Guy Benson noted at Townhall:
America’s top socialist, one of the most disgraceful race-baiters in the country, and the nation’s leading anti-child activist all agree: Let’s Go Brandon.
…
Even though failed Mayor Lori Lightfoot has been ousted by voters, today’s runoff could result in an even worse chief executive taking her place. The runoff pits moderate Democrat Paul Vallas against leftist Brandon Johnson. Vallas is the relatively conservative choice, campaigning on an anti-crime platform. Johnson is a paid agitator for the teachers union and a ‘defund the police‘ type, who’s been expediently running away from his own words on the subject.

'Chicago Has Fallen': Conservatives React to Mayoral Election Results
Leah Barkoukis
excerpt:
“You know, they said this would never happen,” Johnson said in a victory speech.
“To the Chicagoans who did not vote for me, here’s what I want you to know … that I care about you, that I value you. I want to hear from you. I want to work with you. And I’ll be the mayor for you, too,” he continued. “This campaign has always been about building a better, stronger, safer Chicago for all the people of Chicago.”
He also vowed to take the “bold progressive movement” nationwide.
“Let’s take this bold progressive movement around these United States of America,” he said. “Chicago, we can show the country, we can show the world what’s possible when we stand on our values.”
He added: “We don’t have to choose between toughness and compassion, between the care of our neighbors and keeping our people safe. If tonight is proof of anything, it is proof that those old false choices do not serve this city any longer.”

:pondering: Why didn't they just keep Beetlejuice?
Apparently, it turns out that she was not radical enough. The Windy City had previously settled for a black lesbian when what they really wanted was a black communist cop-hater.
