Ex-Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh indicted on federal charges related to self-published children's books

By Cody Derespina | Fox News

Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh is facing federal charges related to what prosecutors say was a plot to enrich herself through sales of her self-published children’s book series, according to a grand jury indictment made public Wednesday.

Pugh, 69, is expected to self-surrender to U.S. Marshals Thursday before her first court appearance before U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow, according to a news release.

The former mayor, who resigned her post in May amid the book sale controversy, is charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, seven counts of wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States and two counts of tax evasion. The indictment was returned Nov. 14.

Not questioning the appropriateness of the Federal charges, but no state charges? Will that be "ever" or just "yet"? Federal and state prisons should arguing over who gets her first.

Anyone else suspect this would have been handled differently under Obama or HilLIARy?

It's Maryland. It would be shocking if she HAD state charges hanging over her head.

You are correct. She would have never been charged. Professional courtesy.

Former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion and fraud charges a day after she was indicted.

Pugh, a 69-year-old Democrat, entered the pleas in federal court Thursday. She pleaded guilty to four of the 11 charges levied against her for her alleged participation in a scheme involving sales of her self-published children’s book series, Healthy Holly.

Prosecutors say that Pugh defrauded Baltimore businesses and nonprofits with about $800,000 in sales of her books. Pugh resigned from public office earlier this year.

For some reason, the Baltimore Sun committed journalism and investigated her doings.

5 Year Sentence Recommended For Former Baltimore Mayor

Quote
Back in November, we learned that disgraced former Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh had avoided a messy trial by pleading guilty to multiple counts of corruption and tax evasion. This all stemmed from her self-dealing scheme to “sell” hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of her self-published “Healthy Holly” children’s books to people and businesses who had dealings with the University of Maryland Medical System, where Pugh sat as a board member.

At the time, I wondered what sort of deal she had cut with the prosecutors in exchange for the guilty plea. Whatever other information she provided to the state might not have turned out to be all that valuable because prosecutors aren’t letting her off with a slap on the wrist. They’re looking for nearly five years behind bars in addition to some hefty fines.

I'd prefer 5-10, but 5 years wouldn't be peanuts.
