One day after President Biden implored the media to not treat the 2024 election like business as usual, ABC's George Stephanopoulos sternly told his audience on Sunday's "This Week" that this year was abnormal and a "test" for the media and the country.
In contrast with the show's usual style, Stephanopoulos began the program with remarks on former President Trump's legal troubles and how the 2024 election was testing the tenets of democracy. This followed Biden calling on members of the press to focus less on horse race politics and "rise up to the seriousness of the moment," in a sober conclusion to his speech at the White House correspondents' dinner on Saturday.
"Until now, no American president had ever faced a criminal trial," Stephanopoulos said. "No American president had ever faced a criminal indictment for retaining and concealing classified documents. No American president had ever faced a federal indictment or a state indictment for trying to overturn an election, or been named an unindicted co-conspirator in two other states for the same crime. No American president has faced hundreds of millions of dollars in fines for business fraud, defamation, and sexual abuse," Stephanopoulos began.
Stephanopoulos argued this election was not normal, and that it was easy for everyone to treat it as an ordinary race for the presidency when the "scale of the abnormality is so staggering."

Michael Cohen has drawn scrutiny because of concerns that he is not a credible witness in former President Donald Trump’s hush money case, but a report that Cohen has profited from criticizing his former client during the trial has further complicated his role in the case.
Cohen, a star witness for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, mentioned Trump in livestreams as recently as last week on TikTok, a popular Chinese-owned app on which Cohen has roughly 290,000 followers.
Cohen’s livestreams last hours and attract thousands of listeners, and users who engage with the livestreams sometimes send him donations while he is talking about Trump in the form of TikTok “gifts,” which have financial value, according to an investigative report by ABC News.
“Trump 2024? … More like Trump 20-24 years,” Cohen reportedly said Tuesday night on a livestream.
Cohen, who has been outspoken about his grievances with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, is expected to testify in the trial as the witness with the most direct involvement in and knowledge about Trump’s alleged criminal hush money activity. Cohen has, however, raised eyebrows even for Democratic-aligned legal analysts for speaking so antagonistically about Trump.

President Joe Biden’s use of the judicial system against his primary political opponent has taken the country to a “very dangerous place,” according to Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), who warned about the erosion of the autonomy of everyday Americans, who actually “want a fighter” and therefore “gravitate” to Trump.
He also argued that while America could potentially survive another Biden term, “I don’t think you would want to,” insisting that “the shining light that America used to be would never be the same.”
In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Gosar began by pointing to the former president’s civil fraud conviction in the case brought by outspoken anti-Trump New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump is now appealing a summary judgment issued by New York Justice Arthur Engoron in that civil fraud case, where no actual harm was claimed. He initially faced an unprecedented bond, which appeared aimed at bankrupting him, as well as a slew of politically charged legal challenges.
“The economy of New York will never be the same,” said the congressman, who serves as a member of the House Freedom Caucus and sits on the Oversight and Accountability committee. “People in New York better wake up because this has got ramifications far bigger than anything they’ve ever seen.”
In addition, he added, there will be a “new financial center” outside of New York, with companies seeking to relocate if this case is not overturned.
“I’m waiting for the United States Supreme Court to come forth and say, ‘Enough is enough,’” he said. “I want to see what they are made of because this is all-out lawfare.”

Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Monday on MSNBC’s “Katy Tur Reports” that if the Democrats win majorities in Congress and the White House, they will ditch the filibuster to legalize abortion nationwide.
Pelosi said, “People have to view abortion as a democracy issue. This is about freedom to make your own decisions for a woman. It’s a personal decision, it’s an economic decision at the kitchen table of America’s families, if and when they could expand their families or even start their families.”
Tur asked, “Do you think it’s going to be a more powerful issue at the ballot box this time around?”
Pelosi said, “Well, it is because the fact is that no matter what he says, there will be a national abortion ban, and that would be horrible for our country.”
She continued, “We have to win it all. We have to win the White House, with our great president of the United States, Joe Biden, who has a vision for America that is in keeping with the vision of our founders, the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, the aspirations of our children and their families.”
Tur asked, “If President Biden gets reelected and there’s a Democratic House and a Democratic Senate, what can President Biden do to protect abortion nationwide?”
Pelosi said, “We can enshrine into the law Roe v. Wade.”
Tur said, “That would take two-thirds in the Senate.”
She continued, “No it doesn’t. It’s 60 votes is the Senate now but if we win 50-plus-1 in the Senate, 50 plus the vice president, we can overturn the 60-vote rule.”
Tur said, “The filibuster.”
Pelosi said, “The filibuster and pass it with a 51-vote margin. That’s what we need to do.”
