The 'rain tax', which is largely supported by Democrats and largely opposed by Republicans, would allow towns, counties and local authorities to set up their own storm water utilities. These newly created arms of local bureaucracy would be empowered to charge property owners a fee based on the amount of non-permeable surface they own (think: parking lots and driveways). The logic behind this is that non-permeable surfaces create runoff when it rains, and that runoff gets polluted as it travels from these surfaces into local sewers, and then on to the state's water ways. The revenue generated by these taxes would be used to upgrade the state's storm water systems, and save the state's already polluted waters from further pollution (though the state would step in and scoop up 5% of all revenues).
The EPA, according to an op-ed published by North Jersey.com, has estimated that a complete overhaul of NJ's stormwater systems would cost $15.6 billion.
But unfortunately for Democrats, while taxing the rich might be in vogue among 2020 presidential contenders (because focus groups have suggested that raising taxes on other people remains a politically popular position), very few middle-class voters in a state that is already one of the most heavily taxed in the country want another massive tax levied on their driveway.

Strange time. High tax states going for broke.

Strange time. High tax states going for broke.
They certainly are in CA.
Thirty years ago I'd expect incensed taxpayers to swing things back to the right.
But critical mass has been achieved, demographically, and that is no longer a possibility.
-

They have to because they are broke. All the builders in Eastern PA are now advertising for NJ dopes to move across the river to PA to save huge on taxes. Now we're going to be flooded with a bunch of Lib voters who do not want to live under the oppressive govt' they supported in the first place.

I do feel sympathy, I really do. Since Texas has been inundated by them.

Ugh. I saw this last week. It’s really going to hit as all the snow expected this week melts.
I’ve already told my mom I’m going to move when she’s no longer here.
My alma mater is having a reunion in May and I’m amazed at the number of people counting the days (and years) til they are 62 or 65 or even 60 so they can retire and move to Florida or New Mexico or Arizona and out of NJ.
My sister is looking at places in Denver. I won’t move there, I’m looking at some other place. Haven’t a clue but it can’t be Florida. I need dry heat and preferably all four seasons.

Please tell your friends and neighbors that PA is openly hostile to people with yellow plates. Also tell them that PA is a gun friendly state and we like to wave them around. Then tell them FL and TX is nice this time of year.
-
Northern Arizona might do. Ask @Cyber Liberty about it.
The part of Northern AZ where we live now is actually hotter than Phoenix, but most of the North is high elevation, is much cooler, and has a few Skiing Resorts because they get a lot of snow. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon gets over 200" of snow per year.
Not a lot of places for non-Indians to live, though...it's mostly Navajo Res.

Take a look at Boise. The midwest is too flat for me. The left coast is out. Northern AZ is probably good. Southern Utah too lonely. I don't know if you are arrogant enough to be a Texan.

Sorry, not seeing the part where NJ voters are furious. I thought they liked higher taxes. They keep voting for them again and again and again.

Yes, but hot and humid the other 364 days of the year in Florida. Plus, we have the Stand Your Ground law and it's like the Wild West here. Don't know why anyone would want to move here.

What about Flagstaff?

What about Flagstaff?
Flagstaff is a fairly small University city. Pretty leftist (like Austin but a lot smaller), but you don't have to travel far outside of Flag for a better perspective. Williams, for example (Gateway to the Grand Canyon).
-
They're always looking for new places to nest.
And drag their poop. One of the reasons I like using Boric Acid to control them...they pick up the wonderful poison on their bodies and then drag it back to their pals by themselves so I don't have to. There's something oddly satisfying about making them the instruments of their own destruction.

Daylight robbery: Portugal set to levy tax on sunshine
IrishExaminer
Dan Buckley
Monday, October 10, 2016
In Portugal they call it ‘um ruobo’ or ‘daylight robbery’ and it is little wonder, as the government is proposing to tax something the country has in abundance — sunshine.
The amount of exposure to the sun and beautiful views are the focus of a new council tax which authorities in Portugal say is aimed at making the country more “socially justâ€.
It is already about as popular as water charges in Ireland. While we do not enjoy almost endless sunshine, the Portuguese tax is akin to a window tax introduced here and in England 300 years ago, inspiring the term ‘daylight robbery’.

Tax the rain. Tax the sunshine. Tax the tax you pay. Tax the very air you breath.
What happens when they run out of other people's money? -- Greece.
Eventually it will get to the point where people simply cannot pay 'tax'. And therefore, they just won't.

Photo? Yes, it's a great place that way, especially with a fresh layer of powdery snow resting on the branches of the Pines. It's has nice features in the Summer, too.

The problem with this plan is that it takes 10,000,000 of them to get a cup of milk, you cannot herd them, and the dairies are super tiny, so it is difficult to hook the females up to it.

The Palmetto Bug is our State Bird.

I ain't talking about cockroaches per se, just their milk. Don't you know what the fastest land animal in the world is?

They are trying to infect yeast with it. Yeast will be on the rise. Just think how grand it would be to survive from a yeast infection.
-

I suppose I don't. Cheetahs are pretty fast mammals, but some insect could be if one scaled down the sizes/distances involved. To me, that would be cheating.
Regardless, there won't be cockroach milk if I can get to the roaches first.

Sure, if you don't mind snow. We live just down the I-40 from there now (past Kingman, or as I call it, "Timothy McVeighville"). If you decide to come here, I'll keep the bar open.
If you like the heat (110-115 in June-July), I'd recommend Tempe, near Phoenix. It's a college town much like Flag, without the nice scenery. That's the city next to where I've been located since I moved to AZ in 1980.

Dem lawmakers to soak New Jersey businesses and homeowners as they brace for new tax … ON RAIN
February 11, 2019 | Frieda Powers | Print Article
New Jersey residents and business owners are bracing for an imminent new tax on something they are powerless to control.
Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy is poised to sign a new bill approved by the New Jersey Senate and Assembly that will be taxing…the rain.
The new legislation, inspired by former President Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency, allows the state’s 565 municipalities to set up their own public stormwater utilities which would build and manage sewer systems, according to WLNY-TV.

Deceptive headline. They are not taxing rain.
But if you want to pour concrete all over the place and don't include any retention pond or the like, making the drainage problem, expected to get charged for the additional load you put on the city drainage.

Snow is just another form of rain. So snow will be taxed along with rain, air, dirt, and sunshine.

Murphy has to find a way to recoup all the money he wasted TREATING the roads every time he thought it might snow. Taxing rain is just the beginning.
-
Just so you all know our taxes were raised on Jan 1.

Snow is taxing enough without human intervention.

Shouldn't this issue be addressed in the permitting process?

Take a look at Boise. The midwest is too flat for me. The left coast is out. Northern AZ is probably good. Southern Utah too lonely. I don't know if you are arrogant enough to be a Texan.
Never asked someone where they are from.
If they are from Texas, they'll tell you.
If not, there's no need to embarrass them.

I keep getting offers to transfer to New Jersey. I try not to laugh at them.

You mean Texans are like Vegans, who feel a need to inform everybody of their status constantly?

They paved paradise...

I'd try, but fail. I was once offered a transfer to Hudson River Valley in NY, and I totally failed to not laugh out loud.

So, a vegan and an atheist walk into a bar.
How did I know?
Within 30 seconds, they've told everybody.

Yes, it should be, and probably now is, addressed in permitting, but in addition to that from what I can gather from the article they're talking about requiring retrofitting of older developments. That would most likely require the taking of land to build some kind of SMF. The FDEP was well down the path of trying to require that here, but thankfully Gov Scott put an end to that nonsense.

I know. I got an offer to write ADA code for the M1 tank. Great job. But the job was in Detroit. Thanks, but no thanks.
No desire to live in Michigan, and especially in Detroit.

Yes, but you want to leave.
But not for a while. Maybe 10 years. And with the exception of when my company sent me on various assignments and vacations I’ve been in NJ my entire life.

The UP is awesome I could be a Yooper. In fact it is probably the only place East of the Mississippi and north of the Mason Dixon line where I would fit.

You should ask for the use of one of those tanks as a company vehicle for not only for the commute, but other business and pleasure.

I would need one if I lived in Detroit, just to keep from being mugged and carjacked. That's why I didn't go. Too dangerous and way too cold for me. It was good to know that my decline allowed some other qualified person to take the job. I like that. Had other offers at the time so it was no big deal to me. Honestly, I've worked on some weird systems in my career. Stuff I'm not allowed to talk about.

I am happy where I am at. I've seen enough of the world to know the difference. There is one thing I have wanted to see/visit. The pyramids/temples down South.

Which ones? There are pyramids literally all over the world, except in America. If you mean Egypt, you can do it but it is dangerous. Tourism has nosedived since Obama installed his terrorist Muslim Brotherhood government there. That government was overthrown, but the country is still in disarray and a dangerous place to be. Going to South Egypt, or Luxor, without armed bodyguards would be incredibly dangerous. The farther you go away from Alexandria and Cairo the more it becomes more like a no-man's-land.
Cairo is the safest place to be in Egypt, and even that is a toss-up these days. The government uses troops to keep Cairo safe because they want tourist revenue. Once you leave the Capitol city, you will be more or less on your own unless the tour company has hired police or some armed escort.

The ones in Mexico/Central America. I lived in Egypt for a year. I've been on top of the Great Pyramid. That was 1982. There were guards at night. For a few dollars, they would look the other way. Pretty sure they have stopped the practice. While still in Egypt we heard a Marine (stationed at the Embassy) had fallen off from it and died. Egypt was "safe" back then. We went over to visit some friends in an apartment complex for ex-pats. it wasn't a gated place. There were armed military guards because there were several Israeli families there. The guards had leaned their weapons against the nearest tree and were half a block away getting a soda from a street vendor.

Oh heck yeah. I have the best mountains anywhere. That ain't the point. If I HAD to be east of the Mississippi and north of the South...

Yeah, I can see that. I've been to UP a few times, my bro lived in Marquette for a few years.

That was how the city I used to live in did it. They did not tax them extra. They would not issue the permit until a retention "pond" is built that will hold two hours of rain from all the covered in concrete.

In town, there is a limit on how much of a residential property may be covered by an impermeable surface in my neck of the woods.

Same here. Us back woods hicks learned a long time ago to prevent flooding you need so much area set aside for "Green space".... Retention ponds and housing density limits. Same for commercial development. But I guess those yankee's know what is best... tax everything and everyone.

Upnort, it is always about the Benjamins. How many and how often you can stick it to the citizenry.
Down here it's how to fight off the damn yankee infestation when they bring their liberal big city tax and speed ideas with them and get on Zoning Boards and commisions. Not to mention when they enroll their rugrats in our schools and get elected to the school board.

It illustrates the leftist mindset. They claim to want to do wonderful things for "other people" but they always seem to end up with bags of loot. One would almost think they are only in it for the money.
