House Republicans demand answers on Biden’s potentially illegal student loan consolidation scheme

EXCLUSIVE — A group of House Education and Workforce Committee Republicans, led by Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC), raised concerns on Friday about whether the Biden administration’s student loan consolidation scheme is illegal.

In a letter obtained exclusively by the Washington Examiner, Foxx and 12 Republicans demanded answers from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona about the legality of consolidating Federal Family Education Loans into the Direct Loan program “in order to further its ‘free’ college agenda.”

“The Biden administration has relentlessly pursued shifting the burden of repaying federal student
loans onto taxpayers with complete disregard to its legal authority,” the letter said, adding that other matters, such as the bungled Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, rollout, have “demonstrated the Department’s serious need for increased oversight and accountability.”

The letter comes as the Biden administration continues to find ways to “cancel” student loan debt, which critics say is forcing taxpayers to foot the bill for elite college degrees.

‘Never lifted a finger’: Biden knocks Trump in speech to IBEW labor conference

President Joe Biden took a number of shots at his opponent in the 2024 general election, former President Donald Trump, during his Friday speech at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ Construction and Maintenance Conference.

Biden and Trump are chasing union endorsements ahead of the general election in 2024, with both men relying on support from blue-collar workers in battlegrounds to secure their respective presidential victories. IBEW endorsed Biden in 2020 and again in 2023, just after he announced his reelection bid.

On Friday, the president said he added “tens of thousands” of good-paying union jobs to the economy over the past four years while simultaneously claiming Trump “never lifted a finger” to help labor groups while in office.

“Matter of fact, he lifted a finger to put a thumb on it,” he said. “Not only that, he put union busters on the National Labor Relations Board. The people I’ve appointed to the National Labor Relations Board actually care about American workers.”

Biden continued to attack Trump and Republicans for opposing his efforts to extend student loan debt relief to millions of people and rewrite the Trump-era tax cuts before closing with a summary of his and Trump’s differing views on the economy.

Byron Donalds: Matt Gaetz’s Ouster of Kevin McCarthy Brought House to ‘Lord of the Flies’-Type Environment

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) on Friday said that Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) move to oust then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has turned the House into a “Lord of the Flies”-type situation.

“Matt’s vacating Kevin McCarthy has brought us to Lord of the Flies on Capitol Hill. Not a good situation,” Donalds said.

Well, I really like Donalds and believe that he would have been a great Speaker.  His analogy is correct, it is just conservatives are in a real quagmire and one I don't think that they are going to get out of.

It's not that I disagree with you it's the timing of all this especially in a election year...btw I had high hopes for Johnson believing he was a conservative...

I certainly had higher hopes for Johnson as well, and I should have known that him getting a unanimous vote was a red flag.

State Department employees urged ‘more to punish Israel’ in private meetings: Report

Employees at the State Department privately called for “more to punish Israel” in meetings at Foggy Bottom, according to a new report.

The listening session meetings started in February and have been hosted by Kurt Campbell, deputy secretary of state and former Indo-Pacific coordinator for the White House National Security Council, Jewish Insider reported. News of the meetings comes after various reports on State Department employees expressing dissenting views from the Biden administration’s position on supporting Israel, a key ally of the United States, after the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack last year on the Jewish state.

“It was overwhelmingly calls, including from people I respect, [that] we need to do more to sanction Israel, we need to do more to punish Israel, we need to be more seriously considering ways in which we can sanction them, condition aid, cut off aid, reduce weapons flows,” a foreign service officer said of the meetings, according to the report. “There were people whose issues don’t have anything to do with the conflict … who were making the case for why we need to do more to bash Israel.”

Tensions at the State Department have boiled over into public view after Oct. 7, as staffers resigned over their issues with U.S. policy on aiding Israel against its war with Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist faction. The conflict in the Middle East has escalated this week on the heels of Iran attacking Israel directly, an unprecedented event — leading to Israel striking back on Friday.

Trump appears to be target in bill to strip Secret Service protection from convicted felons

.

One Democratic House representative has filed legislation that would block convicted felons from being protected by the Secret Service — which would affect former President Donald Trump if he is convicted in his trial.

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) introduced legislation on Friday that stated Secret Service protection would “terminate for any person upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State offense that is punishable for a term of imprisonment of at least one year.”

The DISGRACED Former Protectees Act reasons those convicted of crimes and sentenced to prison would cause “potential for conflicting lines of authority within prisons.” Additionally, it would “allow judges to weigh the sentencing of individuals without having to factor in the logistical concerns of convicts with Secret Service protection.”

While Trump isn’t named as the main purpose of the legislation, the bill’s fact sheet says his “unprecedented 91 felony charges in Federal and State courts across the country have created a new exigency that Congress must address.”

The bill also says it would apply to Trump if he is convicted. Thompson is a Trump critic, as he was the Jan. 6 committee chairman and recently called an “election integrity” event he held with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) a “sham.”

Freedom Caucus Posts Rotating Guard To Block Sneaky Leadership Moves

In a sign of growing discord among House Republicans, members of the Freedom Caucus are taking turns monitoring the House floor to prevent the GOP leadership from using sneaky procedural tactics to sap the power of increasingly rebellious conservatives.

Specifically, they're wary that party leaders and their allies will, without prior announcement, bring measures to the floor and seek their passage via "unanimous consent." With that approach, the presiding officer simply states, "If there is no objection, the motion will be adopted." After a pause to allow for objections, the officer declares, "Since there is no objection, the motion is adopted."

Correct. And his record is evidence of what a second term would be like.

That’s why he would have to admit to the mistakes of his first term and ask for penance.

Would he be bullshitting? Perhaps. But I would take that risk in the slight chance he was sincere.

You're much too kind.
I think a change of heart must be earned.
A form of restitution in a sense.
Proof.

I sure as hell ain't gonna give the guy that kind of power again, just because he says so.
