At a pre-trial GOP conference meeting at 11:30 a.m., McConnell tried to calm everyone down. According to senators in the room, McConnell offered one simple piece of advice: take a deep breath.
It seems to have worked.
Republicans take a deep breath after initial Bolton scare
Republican senators began Monday in a bad spot. They ended it feeling like they were in a better one, at least for now. What changed? A late-morning pep talk from Senate Majority Leader McConnell and...

This afternoon's side-by-side is all you need to know.
While Washington Democrats careen toward an unsuccessful impeachment attempt... the President is keeping his promise to strengthen our relationship with Israel and work for peace in the Middle East region.

I think McConnell is the most under-appreciated Majority Leader of the last half-century (at least) for Republicans.

Romney just walked by Loeffler as they were both leaving a caucus lunch. They didn’t address each other.
I asked Loeffler about this tweet as she walked by reporters, following Romney, but she didn’t say anything.

After 2 weeks, it’s clear that Democrats have no case for impeachment. Sadly, my colleague @SenatorRomney wants to appease the left by calling witnesses who will slander the @realDonaldTrump during their 15 minutes of fame. The circus is over. It’s time to move on! #gapol

Pat Philbin is emphasizing the critical point that "maladministration" was REJECTED as a basis for impeachment under our Constitution. Unlike in the British Parliament, our president does not "serve at the pleasure of the legislature" ...but rather THE PEOPLE themselves.

At no point of the House impeachment inquiry did Schiff ever subpoena Bolton.
That was Schiff's play call to declare himself ready for trial when he clearly wasn't.
Now, he's complaining in the Senate about the many reasons why he can't prove his case.
That's on him.

Romney "made a strong pitch" for witnesses during a closed-door lunch of Senate Republicans.
Romney is now effectively working against party leaders and arguing that the proper way to test each side's contention is to hear from people directly involved.
Mitt makes his move
The occasional Trump critic is in the middle of an internal GOP fight over the impeachment trial.

Sekulow's argument is passionate here. He's telling the Senate that if they remove Trump in the middle of an election after his campaign was spied on by the government and smeared for "Russia collusion" (by the House managers) they will be part of something evil #ImpeachmentTrial

We see yet again how the House Democrats' three-month-long impeachment sham brought the House to a screeching halt.
We're days away from the federal ban on #fentanyl expiring. The Senate unanimously passed an extension. The House hasn't acted. Total silence from Speaker Pelosi.

President @realDonaldTrump
has been more supportive of Ukraine than the previous administration, giving them lethal military aid to defend themselves against Russia.
That's called a policy difference.
Obama wasn't impeached over his administration's "policy difference."

By pursuing a partisan, vindictive impeachment -not based on direct evidence, but on hearsay & an insatiable desire to see the president removed from office - Democrats, as @JaySekulow
highlights, are lowering the bar for impeachment.
The Senate must not allow this to continue.

Can't help but wonder what Romney hopes to gain? If they tarnish Trump enough, would he be foolish enough to oppose him?

Getting his name in the press and looking like the hero to utah.... I suspect he would not be acting this way if his niece was not protecting him...

OK, that's a wrap. The Defense is totally finished so the "Questioning Period" begins tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

I think it is as simple as Trump embarrassed him in 2016 by pointing out what a two faced hypocrite he is. Romney doesn't care about the Pub party or anyone else. He is the perfect example of why I won't contribute to the party, but will contribute directly to candidates.

That's absolutely brilliant trolling by Huckabee. If Schiff were to object and say that's not true...then Huckabee can say "and now you know how the President felt when you lied about that phone call."
-
So, if you were there, what question would you ask?
Why didn't the House call witnesses they wanted to hear from?
Why didn't the House go to court and fight for their subpoena's?
Why didn't Schiff testify under oath to the Judiciary committee?
Why didn't the IG testify publicly and why wasn't his transcript released?
Why wasn't the leaker called to testify under oath?
Why weren't Trump's lawyers allowed to cross examine witnesses?
Why weren't the Pubs allowed to call all the witnesses they wanted?
Why have you supported this soviet style show trial?

Why wasn't Ambassador Yovanovitch charged with perjury after she lied under oath to a House Committee, and why was her perjured testimony included in the rationale for impeaching the President? And how much of the missing US AID money ended up in her bank account?

Why? Because they aren't interested in the truth; they are only interested in removing Trump -- and there are still those within the GOP that would like to see him gone.

Key question for Republicans: Nothing they could imagine hearing from any witness is, in their view, going to change the outcome of the impeachment trial. Do they want to extend tedious proceedings by weeks, possibly, for witness testimony that won't change a thing.

Okay, let’s say McConnell doesn’t have the vote to prevent calling for witnesses. So, what does that mean?
Well, then each individual witness must be approved by a majority of the senate. Who has the majority? That’s right, the GOP. So, the result would likely be that no witness can get a majority.
And in the end, no witnesses testify and McConnell moves to a vote on the articles of impeachment, or possibly for dismissal.

Rand Paul predicts no witnesses for Trump if the Senate votes on individual witnesses. Enough turncoat RINOs exist to prevent either Biden or the fake "whistleblower" from being called. All witnesses will be for the prosecution.

Murkowski, Collins and Romney does not leave Cocaine Mitch much room to play with and since CJ Roberts is presiding over the trial doesn't that disallow VP Pence as a tiebreaker?

That's my take as well. Which is why McConnell should have started this process the moment the House passed the impeachment articles and subpoenaed Ciaramella to testify. The Dems weren't ready then, but they sure are ready now.
