Case closed against Sen. Bob Menendez after committee finds that he paid back all gifts
Rodrigo Torrejon
Nearly a year after the Senate ethics committee "severely admonished" Sen. Bob Menendez for ethics violations that nearly derailed his political career, the committee has declared its case closed.
In a harshly worded letter last April, the committee told Menendez, D-N.J., that accepting gifts from his friend and donor Salomon Melgen and advocating for Melgen's personal and business interests with government officials had violated Senate rules. Those actions formed the basis of federal corruption charges against Menendez in a case that went to trial in 2017 but ended with a hung jury and the government deciding to drop its prosecution.
The ethics committee closed the matter after concluding that Menendez paid back all the outstanding gifts, according to a letter obtained by NorthJersey.com and the USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey.
