I used to love to see them on the Ed Sullivan show. Mostly her,though. Keely Smith was still alive and still singing a few years ago.

The Jive Aces, in the Dolce Vita video; which is obviously, about Italy, it sure looks like the Rockabilly singer from Wheels Fargo and the Nightingale, she also doubles in another band. I see the Jive Aces also sang some with the Satin Dollz, there are a number of good current bands out there styled on the older stuff.
Oh, that singer from Wheels Fargo, her other band is the Poison Ivies and the Steadies. The Crampps of course, revived that song.

Not many hits on some of these videos but I like it.
She's got that Betty Page hair style. Europe is nuts about this rockabilly.
Very interesting that band the Jive Aces is brought up, a lot of music is out there.

Ella Fitzgerald of course, is a household name, Sarah Vaughn recorded this in 1958, good quality recording, her voice is so silky to me. I've always like Dionne Warwick's voice as well, special even if it's usually pop.

I don't know why, but this song popped in my head tonite. Always found it very moving and patriotic, and makes me want to give thanks again to the guys that went to Nam and never got the parade:

Maybe a song for the mods, the highway patrol of the internet, I believe this song was written back in the '60s/early '70s, I heard the original but this really seems to capture the spirit of what the song was written about.

I LOVE Annie Lennox's voice. Seems like she just throws all that vocal power out there effortlessly. I always had the feeling if she ever really cut loose there would be a mushroom cloud appear over her head.

I've unlocked my personal messages, just in case, I saw a few posts on that.

40 years ago:
March 26: Producer Felton Jarvis, desperate for new material to fulfill Elvis' contract, begins recording selected songs from the tour on a rented eight-track machine, suggesting songs to Elvis he's never performed before.
March 30: At tonight's show in Alexandria, LA, Elvis sings the first verse of "Can't Help Falling In Love" as "Wise men know when it's time to go."
March 31: Elvis cancels his second date in Baton Rouge during intermission, then flies home and cancels the last three days of the tour as well. An upset Colonel moves the canceled dates to the end of his next tour.
April 1: Elvis checks into Memphis' Baptist Hospital for "exhaustion."
April 5: Elvis returns to Graceland, with a concerned Priscilla and Lisa Marie flying in to visit.
April 13: The singer vacations in Vegas with a twenty-year-old bank teller he's just met, Alicia Kerwin. While there, he complains of labored breathing, and his Vegas doctor is flown in. Kerwin soon leaves the King after finding his mental state "too depressing."

Maybe, but Otis Redding he ain't. ;)
@EasyAce
Did you see his face while he was singing? At times it absolutely lit up with joy. I don't remember seeing Otis that happy about anything.
@sneakypete
If you don't remember seeing Otis Redding happy about anything, you may not have been there. Especially not at his
Monterey set. The guy throve on live performances.
@EasyAce
I never saw him live,unless you count early 60's tv as being live. About the only one I remember showing any sign on life on tv back there were Jerrv Lee and Little Richard.

I just acquired the box set of the Beatles Live at the BBC: The Collection, both 2-disc sets of their
BBC radio live performances. It's about the best way to get a gander at how the Beatles sounded live
without the shrieking of The Mania at their concerts. This isn't from that box set, of course, but it's
as close to the box set's cut as you'll get of them playing this number. (Missing from this clip: Paul
McCartney's cheeky introduction of the song---"The next song is from The Music Man. It's also
been recorded by our favourite American group---Sophie Tucker." [Tucker had preceded the Beatles
at the Royal Variety Performance 1963 from which this was taken . . .)
The Beatles, "Till There Was You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUjFpdxFWHU)

@EasyAce
" It's about the best way to get a gander at how the Beatles sounded live
without the shrieking of The Mania at their concerts"
I remember hearing one of them saying all the shrieking is why they quit touring. It got so loud they couldn't hear themselves singing,and sometimes had a hard time hearing the instruments. Can't remember which one said it now. Probably Paul.

All of them said much the same thing at one time or another.
It was wrecking our playing. Eventually I just played the off beat.---Ringo Starr, about the noise. (If you think
about it, he was probably the unsung hero of their concerts, since the racket made it so impossible for them to
hear themselves they probably had to lean on Ringo's backbeat just to stay in the same place.)
And if you listen a certain way, you could say that with Beatles For Sale (a.k.a. Beatles '65 in the U.S.) at
the end of 1964 that the Beatles had already looked into the mouth of the beast they birthed and were wearying of
it. Especially, listen to the way George Harrison sings "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" to finish that album. When
Carl Perkins wrote and first cut that song it was just teenage bragging. When Harrison got hold of it in late '64, he
sang it as though the very idea of everybody trying to be his baby scared him sh@tless.

I liked this one so much the first time I heard it on YouTube I bought the album . . . it features Count Basie's great
tenorman/flautist Frank Wess and Kenny Clarke, the drummer who changed the game forever a decade earlier
when he became the first jazz drummer to keep time on the ride cymbal rather than just thumping the bass drum
to keep time . . . and of course old Bags himself at the vibes . . .

A few covers, I'm not sure if this is the song I heard by Stevie Salas but he's being billed as a Native American Hendrix-styled guitarist and here he does one of Jimi's songs. Salas seems to hail from San Diego; so, he sort of sounds like a Chicano, Mexican American type to me.

Got what I think is an interesting story about Canned Heat
When they were just breaking out they were doing some shows in Houston and staying with some friends in an Apartment Complex in Houston, Lazy Oaks, one of them got drunk and was peein in the Courtyard, my second wife (then @ 5 yo) saw this, told her Mom who called the cops, they arrested the guy and the band had to cancel their shows for a few days till he got out of jail.
Karma
The one time she called the cops on me they took her to jail instead.
-
That's an interesting story on Canned Heat; they were hard partyers. Now, with the internet, we can hear a lot of music for free while in the day, one had to buy it usually or listen to a friend's.
Captain Beyond isn't too bad, I listened to this the other day. I always saw their records and they looked interesting.

They don't get enough of the credit they deserve for helping re-birth the blues. (In more ways than one: co-founder
Alan Wilson not only helped re-discover Son House, he taught House how to play his old songs all over again and
recorded with House for House's comeback album on Columbia in 1965.)

Guitarist known as J. Geils found dead in Massachusetts home

GROTON, Massachusetts —
5 Investigates has learned John Warren Geils Jr., the artist known professionally as J. Geils and part of the rock group The J. Geils Band, was found dead in his Groton, Massachusetts home.
The 71-year-old was found unresponsive by police around 4 p.m. Tuesday after they responded to his home for a well-being check. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
Geils and the band are best known for their album, "Freeze Frame" and the song "Centerfold," which hit No. 1 for six weeks.
Geils formed the band during his time at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering.
At Worcester, he formed J. Geils Blues Band with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, and Peter Wolf, with Seth Justman becoming the last member before the band released its debut album in 1970.
The J. Geils Band was influenced by soul music and rhythm and blues, but it moved toward pop and rock by the time the album "Love Stinks" came out in 1980.
After 11 albums, the band's 12th album, "Freeze Frame," hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts for four weeks in 1981 and remained on the chart for 70 weeks. The title track "Freeze Frame" made it to No. 4.
While on tour, opening acts for the band included the Eagles, Billy Joel, ZZ Top and U2.
The band broke up a few years later.
Geils has called Groton his home for 35 years.

@TomSea
IIRC,it was released some time in the early 80's,and had Albert King,King Crimson,The Staple Singers,Sam and Dave,and pretty much every other serious,as opposed to flash tv,performer on it that had roots to Memphis.
IIRC,this is the tune that kicked it off,and it pretty much remained at this level until the album ended.
BTW,I think I still have some of those "record thingies" stored away somewhere. If I do,that album will be there. The trick will be remembering to look for it and then remembering where they are.

House of The Rising Sun played on Steve Caton's and Eric Goodchild's (me) 7 foot tall Musical Tesla Coils.
This was the first time the coils have ever been run together. It was a marvelous first test.
These are two gigantic solid state musical Tesla Coils. A Tesla Coil is a special type of transformer invented by Nikola Tesla that is able to generating extremely large voltages using a phenomenon known as electrical resonance. Each coil in this video is capable of generating a 13 foot spark. This equates to about 500,000 volts of electricity.
The primary drive system for the coils consists of high power semiconductors arranged into an H-Bridge switching configuration. During a spark event, the coil is pulsed on for a few hundred millionths of a second. During this short time, thousands of amps circulate within the primary tank circuit and the energy is coupled into the secondary resonator through magnetism.
So what appears to be a continuous burst of sparks is actually a specific number of sparks generated per second. By modulating the number of sparks that emit from the coil each second, different tones can be produced by the coils.
These coils were constructed by Eric Goodchild and Steven Caton.
Eric Goodchild is currently an EE student at ASU Polytechnic.

@EasyAce
Someone pointed me to the title track on YouTube. I gave it a listen; I'd almost never really
sunk into Alice Coltrane previously, though I have quite a library of her husband's work---
the work he did before he started going stark raving mad in his music in mid-1965. I listened
to "Journey in Satchidananda" the title track and fell so much in love with it I bought that
album plus her earlier . . .

We should consider dating the threads but it is not that important.
@TomSea @EasyAce @mystery-ak
Let's do it starting now.
I have never been a Mod anywhere before and all this crap is new to me,but I THINK we might be able to use the "Merge" function to pull all daily threads into a new folder we MIGHT be able to create named "April 2017",for example.
Nancy,is this doable? It sure would clean up your board and make it easier for people to find archived files with songs they want to find.
-
TEST!
This is an attempted to see if we can merge daily files into a monthly and yearly file so they are easier to find,and so it reduces clutter on the main board.
I guess we will see how it works beginning on 21 April.
-
If I was me I would 'Stickey" it for the month and and just merge the dailys into it. Then next month start a new one for May.... Stick it and then unstick the April thread.
Just spit ballin.
-
@sneakypete Sure, we can think about it. If nothing else, we may not have to worry immediately about this. Also, once I saw how all of the threads look, it doesn't look all that bad but it probably would be better to be tidy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxgQH9g2okE
-
Wingnut's suggestion sounds good. I might try to merge some of the other threads into the April thread, see how that works. I'll do it.

Well, I did Wednesday's thread but it seems to change everything into April 2017's caption but I guess that is okay. :shrug: I actually had to modify the name of Wednesday's thread. I don't know if we want that.. Hmmn

I got that message but I could post because we are moderators. It's a bit confusing; looks like we will have to change the title to every merged thread. I don't think that is easy to understand but that's what I did.
-
Test.
@sneakypete
See, it should work for us.
-
We can post, no problem and since it is only April 20th, maybe we should not feel in a rush but I will try to do these administrative duties gradually, we will see how it works. The thread though is only locked should someone want to post a video in here. They can't, they will do the daily thread.

Yes, I think we know that and I tried to find a video without Phil in it in as many pictures. That said, what he did is unforgivable. I guess he did that in the 1990s or whenever, the music he produced, his "wall of sound" is genius nonetheless. It's very sad I have no idea what happened to him. If one listens to the 1964 Motown Christmas album that he produced, he talks on the last track. He seems like a regular guy back when this was made.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x52eGN-hDGM
The whole album is great. We have so many successful men and something really bad goes on in their lives. He's another example.

It's really not just for completists if you consider what I'd said once before---it's maybe the single best source
of live performances by the Beatles in which you can actually hear them playing and singing without
the cacophony of The Mania drowning them out. The sound is actually very, very good; it's not as raw as some
fear, but even where it is a little raw you come away thinking one thing---they really were a great rock and roll
band. The only better example of how good they were live is their performance at the 1963 Royal Variety
Performance---the one where John Lennon introduced "Twist and Shout" with his famous "Would the people
in the cheap seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you just rattle your jewelry . . ." They played
"From Me To You," "She Loves You," "Till There Was You," and "Twist and Shout" and did it confidently
without The Mania getting in the way.

There's a lot of songs that fit this genre; I'll keep a few for future reference.... a lot of monster songs, I have not listened to in depth. Those UFO songs and other really reflect what was going on in America at the time.
The premise of the song came from a joke told by the child of a friend of Wooley's; Wooley finished composing it within an hour.[1]
The creature is not necessarily purple, but rather it eats purple people:
I said Mr Purple People Eater, what's your line?
He said eating purple people, and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock 'n roll band[2][3][4]
The creature also gives an additional reason for choosing not to eat the narrator, because the narrator is "so tough".

One gospel song by him I was not that familiar with not too long ago.
I've got the book on my list.
I liked listening to Sam Cooke doing gospel---but with the Soul Stirrers on their great 1950s recordings.
(The Stirrers had another impact on the music to come: their ensemble singing style became the model
for the ensemble-singing soul groups of the 1960s and later.)
-
Sure, the Soul Stirrers are great; maybe there is some version still around singing but Sam really caught the more modern sound, a father of soul music.
Just for quiz purposes, Sam Cooke was born in Clarksville, MS., home or a home of Delta Blues but migrated to Chicago at a very young age. He grew up in the area called Bronzetown and many Chicagoans know where you are talking about if you say that. The Soul Stirrers hailed originally from Texas but they toured all the time, they picked up Sam in Chicago. I think Chicago became the Soul Stirrers home-base as well.
-
I may have posted this before, this is a favorite that really rocks from cerca 1961; so before the Beatles and a lot of other people.

She wrote a book about her experiences, they aren't much more than a one hit wonder though they had some other charting songs very different than this, soft pop.

The Soul Stirrers are still around. They've probably changed membership more than Congress over the years,
but it was with Sam Cooke and his successor Johnnie Taylor that the Stirrers got more modern in their
own right. After Taylor left the Soul Stirrers' crossover prominence ended.
Speaking of soul men or soul-rockers who launched out of the gospel milieu . . .

The Soul Stirrers are still around. They've probably changed membership more than Congress over the years,
but it was with Sam Cooke and his successor Johnnie Taylor that the Stirrers got more modern in their
own right. After Taylor left the Soul Stirrers' crossover prominence ended.

@TomSea
I think everybody in the western world between the ages of 13 and 30 knew how great The Animals were by 1965. I have always considered the Rolling Stones to be the equivalent of a Animals cover band,and most of that was due to Burton,himself. He was and is batshit crazy,but in a good way when it came to music.

Learned that one of Stevie Wonder's earliest songwriting collaborators passed on 15 April: Sylvia Moy.
She was the woman who helped save Wonder's career at Motown, after "Little Stevie Wonder's" voice
began to change and the company was uncertain what to do with him, even considering dropping him
at one point. Moy audaciously asked Mickey Stevenson, Wonder's producer at the time, to let her
work with the kid. Stevenson gave in. And when Moy went to see Wonder and he played her a piece
of a new song he'd been tinkering with---based on the driving beat of the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't
Get No) Satisfaction," which impressed him greatly when he opened a few dates on their 1965 tour
---she took it home and finished the bulk of it, with Motown staffer Henry Cosby putting a finishing
touch on.
The result:
Stevie Wonder, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAcwUSVxgWA)
Sylvia Moy and Stevie Wonder also co-wrote one of his greatest love songs . . .

Ahhhh,Maurice Willliams and the Zodiacs! I was going to what was a local dancehall back then where they appeared often to drink,try to pick up girls,and fight. I was between 14 to 17 years old,and could buy pints of whisky from the waiters that worked the floor and booths. My older brother had lost his drivers license for drunk driving,so he would get me to drive the car for him. If I was caught driving underage with no license,it was a small fine. If he was caught,he would have gone to jail. He would usually hook up with a female that had her own car,so I had his 51 Chebby all to myself after that.
The world was a fun place back then.

That reminds me, theme-wise at least some of "Not Dark Yet" by Dylan and in fact, Trying to get to heaven" by him. Youtube and I'm sure, Dylan's lawyers have made it difficult to find quite a few of his original studio recordings on youtube. Dylan spent some time of his teenage years in Gallup New Mexico. I've never found out though, what he was doing out there. A lot of Dylan's music at youtube are live recordings; kind of unfair to the fans that know his original works. Selfish? I don't know.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JBHyE18L3o
-
Interesting @TomSea
Unaware of the Dylan/New Mexico connection, I thought he grew up in Hibbings, Minnesota, I remember he had a bit part and the Soundtrack in that Billy the Kid movie back in the early 70's with Kristofferson and Coburn, but I think that was filmed in old Mexico.
-
@corbe
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Garrett_%26_Billy_the_Kid_(album)
That album has a lot of interesting instrumental work. It's an alright movie.
River Theme, I think that is the one that's a good instrumental. I don't readily see it on youtube. It's short, so, if one is ever interested and gets a chance, it's worth it.
I'm surprised the movie isn't bigger than what it was.
-
@corbe
Oops, I will have to read up on this but perhaps saying Dylan lived in Gallup as a teenager is a fable invented by Dylan, himself.
Apparently the rumor was started nearly 50 years ago by Dylan himself, apparently to add mystique or color to his backstory. The Gallup angle was debunked by Newsweek magazine as early as 1963, but the story never went away.
Regardless, it begs a question — why did Dylan pick Gallup as a part of his early biography? One plausible explanation:

At least you got to see him at all.
I saw him opening for the Allman Brothers Band and the J. Geils Band on the final weekend of the Fillmore East
in New York. Bad news: it wasn't the closing night, it was the Friday night show that opened the closing
weekend. This, I believe, was King's half-hour opening on the actual final night:
Albert King, closing night at the Fillmore East, 27 June 1971 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yViNCfjLGWg)
(Beware: the guy who posted this listed King as playing "Blues Power" as his second number; it's actually "Got to Be
Some Changes Made.")
The final night turned out to be, in order of appearance: King, the J. Geils Band, Edgar Winter's White Trash, Country
Joe McDonald, Mountain, the Beach Boys, and the Allman Brothers Band. Here's a treat from the Allman Brothers Band's
venue-closing set:

Boy, my eyes feel a dozen times better since basically missing a day being on the computer. I guess the computer screen can really wear them out. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

This riff has been going through my head for the last 24 hours.
I like that song "Sweet Cherry Wine" by Tommy James and.... another birthday boy...

Some fine musicians, songwriters and performers here, it's
Willie Nelson's birthday, before Willie hit pay dirt as a performer, i.e. the Red Headed Stranger, he was a songwriter, he pushed his trade in Nashville; this personally, is one I love and it still reflects the golden era of country music. Of course, Willie wrote Crazy, made famous by Patsy Cline, that too is largely from this era. Probably a few years before this one. I was looking at some country charts from the 1960s, there were number 1s from artists I had no idea who they were and songs I was not familiar with. That leads me to believe there are not that many "real" classics.

Other birthdays:
Lonnie Donegan, April Stevens, half of April and Nino who sing "Deep Purple";
1945, Born on this day, Tammi Terrell, singer, who died of a brain tumour on March 16th 1970 after collapsing into Marvin Gaye's arms on stage during a duet of ‘That’s All You Need To Get By’. Terrall had undergone eight brain operations in 18 months. She had had hits with Marvin Gaye, including the 1967 US No.5 ‘Your Precious Love’.

Poor Tammi Terrel, she really had a hard time.

himself.

James estimates the company owed him $30–40 million in royalties he never received.[4][12] Roulette was a front for organized crime, also functioning as a money laundering operation. In the early 1970s, Levy was at the wrong end of a mob war[clarification needed]. James had to leave New York for a while to avoid a mob hit, which explained[how?] why he recorded an album in Nashville in 1972. He did not feel comfortable writing his book until all those deeply involved with the record company had died.[4] It was only after Roulette Records and Levy's Big Seven Music publishing company were sold (the record company to an EMI and Rhino Records partnership, the music publishing company to Windswept Pacific Music which was later sold to EMI) that James began to receive large royalty checks from sales of his records.[

James' wikipedia biography alone is interesting. Wow, including the bit about their first hit, "hanky panky".

What Wiki left out: Before "Hanky Panky" caught on nationally, there might have been a small bidding war for Tommy James
and the Shondells, with Atlantic Records playing heavily for them---until Morris Levy strongarmed them and any other label
away from the group once he landed the distribution for "Hanky Panky."

This is very good music performed live and if someone didn't tell you, you probably wouldn't have a clue that they are actually from Germany, this is live in Melide, in Switzerland. A half hour is too much time I know to devote to listening to something unless one is wired but they are good performers nonetheless.
