Post by: txradioguy on May 20, 2016, 09:10:15 am
The Midland Police Department’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit successfully detonated in-place a military grenade found in a southeast Midland neighborhood.

No one was injured and no property was damaged, according to MPD officials, who said the grenade in the 600 block of Atlanta Street was “found, picked up and put back in place” by a resident, who later called 911.

The item was originally reported as a suspicious explosive device but was later descirbed as a military grenade. Officials said they were able to detonate the grenade because it contained an explosive charge but that it did not have a pin — or striker — so it could not detonate itself, according to officials.

Police evcuated residences within a two-block radius, and nearby Bunche Elementary School was briefly placed under lockdown while local law enforcement investigated the issue in the surrounding neighborhood, according to an MISD press release.
