France, Germany, Mexico, Australia Join International Outcry over Censorship of Donald Trump
Allum Bokhari 11 Jan 2021
An international outcry over tech censorship is underway, as political leaders from Mexico to Europe voice their alarm at the unchecked power of Big Tech, following the purge of President Donald Trump by the Big Tech Masters of the Universe
Germany
German chancellor Angela Merkel, whose pro-migration, anti-hate speech policies have little in common with President Trump or his movement, has nonetheless expressed concern at Silicon Valley’s unchecked power.
“The chancellor sees the complete closing down of the account of an elected president as problematic,†said Steffen Seibert, chief spokesman of the German chancellor, at a recent press conference in Berlin.
France
French political leaders also voiced their opposition. The finance minister of France, Bruno Le Maire, condemned what he called a “digital oligarchy,†calling it “one of the threats†to democracy.
“There needs to be public regulation of big online platforms,†said Le Maire.
And Clement Beaune, the French junior minister for European Affairs, told Bloomberg TV that he was “shocked†to see President Trump banned from Twitter, saying “this should be decided by citizens, not by a CEO.â€
Mexico
The French and German leaders join president Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, an avowed socialist, who was the first world leader to condemn Facebook and Twitter for banning president Trump.
“I don’t like anybody being censored or taking away from the right to post a message on Twitter or Face(book). I don’t agree with that, I don’t accept that,†said López Obrador.
The Mexican president said tech companies were behaving like an “inquisition†to “manage public opinion.â€
“This is really serious†he added.
The United Kingdom
The Prime Minister of Britain, Boris Johnson, was reportedly alarmed at Silicon Valley censorship even before Trump was permanently removed from Twitter and other platforms.
In November, the Daily Mail quoted a senior government source who said the Prime Minister was considering new laws against tech censorship following Twitter’s censoring of President Trump during the U.S. presidential election.
“Boris did not like what he saw in the US election and has asked for more time to consider how to avoid the same thing happening to him in future,†said the government source, discussing a planned internet regulation bill.
The European Union
Manfred Weber, leader of the largest party group in the European Parliament, said “we cannot leave it to American Big Tech to decide how we can or cannot discuss online,†labeling it a threat to the “consensus building†that is “crucial in free and democratic societies.â€

Unlike the American left, these foreign leaders are not completely blinded by irrational hatred of Trump; they recognize that the Tech industry is asserting the authority to "cancel" anyone, and they could just as easily be cancelled next. Precisely because they are *not* Americans, they probably don't see the American Tech industry as a natural ally, and they recognize that this action places them at a disadvantage to the American Tech industry in the long run.
The UK recently went through some controversy about using Chinese technology for nationwide 5G capabilities. This sort of action by the American Tech industry could drive other countries to more seriously consider doing Tech business with China, or other countries, rather than with the US. And who could blame them?

IKR. Weird as hell.
I think that they are reading other reports of what is happening here that perhaps we aren't aware of here in the U.S. because of the lack of 'free' reporting here. Maybe they realize that our Republic is getting ready to fall and are having an "oh schlitz" moment ... America, what are they going to do without her??

Exactly. What used to be a beacon light around the world (US free speech), has become a sham.

Not to mention they just witnessed a 'banana republic' like election that just took place in the U.S. of all places. The alarms are going off around the world with some countries jumping for joy.

Looks like the "Tech Giants" may have stepped on their skinny little shmeckles.
In a week they'll be back with the mea culpas and the 'we'll change we promise's, they just want to get through the next 9 days.
-
Perhaps these people are simply afraid that when the USA tosses freedom, it might just well come their way too. If the tech oligarchs say you cannot speak, they get their way. They literally shutdown the president of the USA.
If I had my way, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, et al, would each be fined $1 billion per day each for ANY censorship.
There is no excuse. Trump did not tell those folks to go don the street and riot, and if anyone is to blame, it is the incompetent folks in charge of security. There was no excuse for such few folks there. NONE! I say it was choreographed!!! Intentional. And Antifa was a major component of the conspiracy.

It's like the world is uniting against Nazism again.

those who stood against a fair and complete vetting of the results of November’s election are responsible for Wednesday’s “riotâ€. Period.

Me neither... I was also shocked at the ACLU pushing back. The world is never as simple as the conservative bubble makes it out to be.

That's true -- even though the conservative bubble has a clearer understanding of what's going on than the Leftist bubble. They must really be confused.
-
They are doing this to get all digital communications under the jurisdiction of an International Organization, and wrestle it away from private companies, especially US companies.
So basically instead of Twitter shutting you down, some Chinese bureaucrat now would have that power if you said something against China.

@catfish1957
Me either, but it proves the old truism that states "Even a broken clock is right twice a day" is true.
I am also kinda happy that it also proves that being wrong is not always a bad thing. Especially now that I am a geezer being wrong seems to be more of a feature in my life than a surprise.
That is one area where married guys have the advantage over those of us who are single. They are used to being wrong about everything every day of their lives,so it doesn't bother them as much as it does those of us who are single.

@libertybele
EXCELLENT point, and one I had overlooked. While it is true that most of the other countries may not like America due to jealousy or seeing us as a threat to their domination over their people, they STILL rely on America as a "safety net" to prevent them from being invaded and taken over by a neighbor state looking for more assets.
Face it,even since WW-1,the world has looked at America as the "Worlds Babysitter",there every day to protect and right all wrongs. They may never admit this, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. American has always provided a promise of calm, safety, and order in a unorderly world.
When the survival of America is at risk,so is the survival of every other independent nation in the world. And "No,that is NOT overstating it!"

So,you are saying that nothing will change except for the identity of the button-pusher?

@dfwgator
,
Well,I guess if there is ANY "good news" to be found there,it is that if it is a Chinese button being pushed, there is a 50/50 chance it won't work,or will break after pushing it a time or two.

I'm afraid your thinking of the crap they sell us, they only use the best stolen western tech for themselves.
-
They'll never admit it, but weak America will scare them far, far more than an assertive one. They hated Trump, but it will take them about a year of Biden to realize when a damn good president he was and what a disaster America will be. And how much danger they will then be in. For one thing, Europe w/have to get off its ass and defend itself.
-
Europe won't have to "Defend themselves" because the plan is for there to be only ONE military, and it will be controlled by the UN,which in turn will be controlled by the international bankers
Truth to tell,it will be more on an international police force than a military, but a police force with fighter jets, tanks, and even subs with nukes.

A year? I give it 3 months tops. Europe will further deteriorate while our Republic is falling. China, Russia and the Middle East will be competing for control of America. The UN will help the highest bidder.
-
WE'll be the highest bidder. We've always been. But it will nevertheless bend to the will of our enemies.
