A Laredo woman tried to smuggle a child through an international bridge using her niece’s birth certificate, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

An arrest affidavit filed on Friday charged Miriam Marquez, 27, with transport, attempt to transport and conspire to transport an immigrant with no legal documentation.

Marquez and two children arrived at about 11:14 a.m. Wednesday at the Gateway to the Americas International Bridge via the pedestrian lane. She stated that the children were her son and niece, and provided U.S. birth certificates to substantiate her claim, according to court documents.
