Trump denies Pelosi aircraft for foreign trip in response to call for State of the Union delay
President Trump on Thursday appeared to deny military aircraft to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for an upcoming foreign trip, in response to her call to delay the State of the Union address amid the government shutdown.
In a stinging and curt letter, Trump said her trip has been “postponed.â€
He wrote: “Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over. In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.â€

It is a Democrat group of legislators going to a war zone to know what is going on there so they have a better understanding of what is needed there in terms of legislation. Senators went there a week or so ago for the same reason. Going to a war zone puts one life in danger - it is not for fun and play.

I do agree that a trip by a congressperson just to press the flesh should not be subsidized by the taxpayers (allowing a military plane for her and her entourage). If Pelosi wants to go overseas to charm people, she ought to pay her own way. Unlike a number of her constituents, she is being paid during this shutdown. I think she can afford the trip on her own.
Having said that though, I really don't care for all this childishness. Why can't these people put on their big kid pants, get together and hammer out a solution? These theatrics are getting old.

He knows 800,000 families are being robbed of their money for this present time, even if they get it later which doesn't pay their bills now; doctor appts. like yours and mine can't happen for these people, and government contractors never get money as they can't work until government opens again. The economy is going down by millions every week which is quickly going to billions, according to those who calculate the economy - heard those numbers today.

On Thursday at approximately 9:30 p.m. EST, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton tweeted that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi wished to take a military aircraft to travel to Afghanistan that night and on previous occasions because “Congressional spouses could fly for free on military planes.â€
Pelosi and a number of other members of Congress had planned to fly to NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium and Afghanistan on the evening of January 17, 2019 as parts of the government constituting approximately 800,000 employees remain closed from a nearly-month-long shutdown due to expired funding.
Pelosi and her caucus had decried the conditions of the shutdown, which have caused affected employees to miss one paycheck thus far.
Fitton’s tweet referred to a 2009 JW press release which reported, in part, “Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has obtained documents from the Department of Defense (DOD) detailing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s multiple requests for military air travel.
The documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), include internal DOD email correspondence detailing attempts by DOD staff to accommodate Pelosi’s numerous requests for military escorts and military aircraft as well as the speaker’s last minute cancellations and changes. The following are a few highlights from the documents, which are linked in full below:
In response to a series of requests for military aircraft, one Defense Department official wrote, “Any chance of politely querying [Pelosi’s team] if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every weekend?…[T]here’s no need to block every weekend ‘just in case’…†The email also notes that Pelosi’s office had, “a history of canceling many of their past requests.â€
One DOD official complained about the “hidden costs†associated with the speaker’s last minute changes and cancellations. “We have…folks prepping the jets and crews driving in (not a short drive for some), cooking meals and preflighting the jets etc.â€
The documents include a discussion of House Ethics rules and Defense Department policies as they apply to the speaker’s requests for staff, spouses and extended family to accompany her on military aircraft. In May 2008, for example, Pelosi requested that her husband join her on a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) into Iraq. The DOD explained to Pelosi that the agency has a written policy prohibiting spouses from joining CODEL’s into combat zones.
Documents obtained from the U.S. Army include correspondence from Speaker Pelosi’s office requesting an Army escort and three military planes to transport Pelosi and other members of Congress to Cleveland, Ohio, for the funeral services of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Pelosi noted in her letter of August 22, 2008, that such a request, labeled “Operation Tribute†was an “exception to standard policy.â€â€¦

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that it obtained documents through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the Air Force detailing $134,587.81 plus $50,000 for an advance of funds for an “escort officer†for a total of $184.587.81 for then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) Congressional delegation (CODEL) to Italy and Ukraine in 2015.
Judicial Watch filed a December 2015 FOIA lawsuit after the Air Force failed to respond to an August 2015 request ( Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of Defense (No 1:15-cv-02236)) for:
All records regarding mission taskings of flights escorting members of Congress
All records concerning transportation costs for transporting members of Congress
All passenger manifests (DD-2131) for transporting members of Congress
All weekly travel reports for members of Congress
The documents show that from July 30 to August 6, Pelosi took a trip to Milan, Rome and Naples, Italy, and Kiev, Ukraine, for herself, her husband , several members of congress and their spouses. The Italy trip included Milan, Rome and Naples with visits to the Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel, Duomo and viewing Da Vinci’s “Last Supper.â€
The documents also show the Air Force’s negative response to a Pelosi staff request for a specific crew for Pelosi’s flight. An official notes that it: “would be a disastrous precedent to set even if it were possible.†The Air Force further points out: “Our ARC crews have plenty to balance already with military duties and their civilian employers.â€
The documents also detail a CODEL trip for Senator Cory Gardner (R-CO), who traveled commercial flights to Asia , including Tokyo and Okinawa, Japan; Seoul, Korea; plus Beijing and Hong Kong, China. This trip, with flights and per diems, cost at least $26,009.03 .
“Speaker Pelosi has a demonstrated record of abusing the perks of office that give her access to military luxury travel paid for by taxpayers,†said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

It is a Democrat group of legislators going to a war zone to know what is going on there so they have a better understanding of what is needed there in terms of legislation. Senators went there a week or so ago for the same reason. Going to a war zone puts one life in danger - it is not for fun and play.

Last time she went she not only kissed ass to Bashir al Assad and the mad Mullahs in Iran...she came back calling General David Petreaus a liar.
I suspect she was going to do the same on this trip.
