Inside the House Republican conference meeting this morning, Republicans prepared for another vote on legislation to address the border crisis.
According to a GOP aide, the voting plan would follow the same structure as before -- first a vote on Boehner’s emergency appropriations bill followed by a vote on a bill to block President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals DACA.
What has changed from yesterday is that Republican leadership is changing the language on both bills to satisfy anti-amnesty hardliners.
The border appropriations bill will include tougher language to expedite deportations and changes to the 2008 law, and the DACA language will be similar to the original language drafted by Sen. Ted Cruz.
Yesterday’s DACA proposal drew criticism after supporters noted significant differences from language introduced by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).
Inside the meeting, Speaker John Boehner spoke first to the caucus, followed by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. After that the microphone was open for others to speak about the two bills.
As of publication, a GOP aide noted that “Steve King is on board” with both bills, citing progress still underway. King spoke on behalf of the revised language in the closed-door meeting, telling colleagues that the bill yesterday had a good purpose, but now it has language matching that purpose, according to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA).
