The decline of IRS services causes real harm to real taxpayers.   Since government shutdowns are a current form of political football,  it may be wise to declare the IRS an essential agency exempt from such shutdowns.

How about we just get rid of it entirely and replace it with something much more in keeping with the founders' ideas?

Like an overweight man losing his dentures, this could be a very good thing.

Don't worry, you'll get your national tax on consumption.  It will be implemented to finance Medicare for All and other prog spending initiatives.  Mark my words.

The redesigned 1040 is a disaster brought to you by politicians.  Instead of making it harder for the IRS and tax preparers to do their jobs, congress should have eliminated the loopholes that make the code a monstrosity.  No, you can't just disband the IRS.  Somebody has to collect $4 trillion to pay for all of the crap Republicans want.

Oh yes, we can and we can collect all the necessary revenues without a Marxist income tax code!  Did it for over 100 years in fact.

We're not going to have a European VAT tax implemented here.  Keep dreaming.

What @Bigun is talking about is something akin to a flat tax or a fair tax.  Not yet another big government strain on a workers already stressed paycheck.

Exactly right @txradioguy.  Specifically what I'm talking about is a point of retail sale only sales tax on new goods and services only.
